I consider Astrid Varnay the PERFECT Brunhilde; eventhough I do love Birgit Nilsson whose success overshadowed Varnay; Nilsson's voice was like a laser and she had rock solid technique; but Varnay puts emotion and depth into her singing & gets into character. Varnay's blessed with a great technique as well; it's sad she was so underrated. She is brilliant, absolutely brilliant and she moves you to tears

C'est LA Brunnhilde. Il faut savoir que en 56, non seulement elle a fait le rôle écrasant de Brunnhilde dans le Crépuscule, mais elle y a fait aussi une norne (qui aurait dû être chantée par Mödl mais elle était "malade").

Nobody quite gets into the psychology of this scene as do Varnay and Knappertrsbusch, who understood Wagner as few others did. Listen to the way Varnay sings "Kein andrer!" as one of many such examples, and Kna's superb tempi and grasp of the long line.

There are a tiny elite number of Bruennhildes and/or conductors in this scene who may possibly surpass individually what we hear in this upload. But I've often felt that, as a whole, this entire Ring cycle from '56, with Kna and Varnay in their element and Windgassen, Neidlinger and some others at their best, may be the most uniformly satisfying one available. So thanks for letting us hear these closing moments from a special perf. May we look forward to the scene's second half being up soon?
