There were short films. I do remember them. They were shown at my two visits to road safety centres while in primary school along with with pratice in using them too on site.
And believe it or not, Hector still does road safety lessons here in Australia. He visits schools and does school holiday clinics. He is owned by the NT government.
I'm sure there were short films as well as the ads ... I can remember sitting in the school hall watching various films, and one of them was the 'live action' Hector the Cat. I think there was a Miss Cat too. Can anyone else remember that?
Stop at the curb R Look to the right R Look to the left R Look to the right again. Then if the road is clear of traffic Walk straight across the road, don't run Walk straight across the road. Then the verse above is sung two more times. R=Echo (repeat the line) This ad did broadcast in South Australia, the state I lived in back in 1982 on TV. The personal irony of mine of this ad is weird.
I remember this ad well as a kid in 1982. And despite flouting these rules once to avoid having a scheduled vaccination at school in August 1982 (ran across a six laned arterial road in one continious motion and got hit by a car to avoid the Salk vaccine at school), I loved this ad and reminds me of how important road safety is. After the accident, I had to re learn the road rules from scratch as I was on cruches with a broken leg. This ad helped in the process.
Awesome video, happy childhood memories! Good to know I'm not the only one who sings the jingle in my head before I cross a busy road well into adulthood! By the way, it wasn't just Victorian, it was broadcast in New South Wales too. At the very end you'll see the logo "Department of Transport, Australia".

I've so been looking for a clip of this for so long!
I was in high school when this came out, and I still often start singing the jingle when I come to a kerb. I also wonder why such campaigns for children are no longer run by government agencies.
Thanks a million Conniptions886, you've made my day.
@conno3000 me too! and i agree with the comments that said how effective this ad campaign must have been, all these years later we're adults and we still remember it (i'm 30). if i ever have kids i'm making them watch and learn this song!
I love Hector the safety cat, he made me dance while i learned the message ! Why don't we do constructive things like that anymore ? What the hell happened to milk for kids at schools ? I want hang out in the 70's when it was fun and there were no generation Y dickheads.
what the duce ?

We sang this song at Kindergarten when we went to the library. One of those lessons you never forget...that was in 1988...

I was twenty and working for channel 7, filming Romper room in the 80's we used to dance to this song on set. Made me smile

I don't recall this animated version , I remember the costumed character with small children in the commercials.
Judging by the amount of people who continue to hear this jingle in their head all these decades later is proof that the road safety campain worked.

To this day, whenever I cross a road, I always sing the lyrics in my head. Am I insane?
