  • I love the concept of Chrome OS, since I do everything within my browser. I switched to Linux to get a faster speed out of this laptop, and I imagine Chrome OS would be even faster. People have criticized it for being useless without internet, which is a retarded argument. If I lost internet on this full-fledged operating system, I'd still be screwed, since everything I do requires an internet connection.

  • A Chromebook is Windows 95 with Chrome.

  • I think Chromebooks have to come down in price if they want to compete. You can get a full notebook for about $500 now. If Chromebooks come down below $250, I will get one.

  • Nerd, hahahaha. You are hilarious man.

  • I will stick with a netbook... I just run Google Chrome on top of windows 7 ultimate or Ubuntu on my eMachines em350 netbook...

  • think about it buy a $250 netbook put joli os on it and rock on joli is cloud but it has native games and apps for it so why spend the extra 100 dollars on the cheapest chrome book and and just get a netbook with windows and download joli os,

  • If you want a computing device that runs a watered down os for portability, then get an iPad

  • @techdude6693 I'd rather have a chromebook, although I don't really want either right now.

  • chrome os is fail.

  • $400-500 for a Chromebook? REALLY?... I'd rather buy a full-fledge laptop with Windows 7 on it for that price jeesh..

  • @sonicfan23 yeap..if i'm paying more than 300 bucks for a notebook pc that has to store it's stuff in " the cloud" fk that! I prefer to have THE CHOICE of where my data is stored.

  • i cant trust clouds... what if the internet one day decides to die... my whole business could be screwed

  • @sk8rguy4life1123 Everybodys would be. EVERYBODY.

  • @sk8rguy4life1123 yeap..that's why i didn't vote for the moron Barry seotoro ( aka barrack insane obama ) who has wanted to take total control over the internet in the name of " national security" IF he and/or government deemed one day they saw what they think would be a threat to national security. ron Paul all the way for president. someone who DOESN'T want to control what you have access to. I would trust iCloud MORE than the cloud, but im not sure about that yet either.

  • @lockergnome why do you record with two camras and why do you not use the live feed cam to record the youtube vids

  • They aren't affordable at all! $500! No thank you, I'll get a Dell and run Win 7.

  • Dude, try to limit the hand motions please...

  • They are NOT affordable.

  • I have been playing with it trying to get it to work on a usb stick for my dell mini 9 and have to say I am annoyed it doesn't support my wireless card as you'd think it that is one thing it would be good at. That being said though if you want to recreate the Chrome OS feel just get the apps you'd want in Chrome the browser and pin them it will give you the same effect.

  • I cannot even remember that i ever ever used my laptop without having internet!!!!

  • Hey Chris Pirillo is awake!!

  • @xskydevilx I think it cant unless you flash it over to another bios like on the cr-48 (first chromebook for testing) so just do some googeing if you have a serise 5 chromebook

  • I must not be average. I need more than just the internet.

  • Get a phone instead. *hint* *hint*

  • Chromebooks + Me = Never ever gonna buy one in My LIFE

  • Chromebooks = GAY!

  • "get on line, check email, surf the web" you can do all that now with no chance of viruses with linux mint boot usb or cd. That makes way more sense to me than this, but most people will never try it. :(

  • @ModelOrange If everyone switches to Linux where do you think the malicious people will turn to?

  • @Warpurlgis I meant when you shut off your computer and turn it back on everything is erased when you use a live boot cd, so any virus or anything you've changed is wiped away; I'm not saying that Linux machines can't get a virus. If there were any windows live boot cds I would have suggested that, because most people use windows, but I've never head of that. In this sense it would be the same as a chromebook because nothing is stored on the computer itself (as far as I know).

  • It would be nice to have a Chromebook as a side computer. It's portable and it does what it says.

  • if i just want to get online, i use my phone or my tablet...

  • I wish people would stop saying "trending" and go back to popular.

  • these things suck...u cant even have itunes

  • @chris1abramczyk no he had his site since 96 since youtube wasnt around back then and if you think he looks 20 you must still be a child

  • Chris's GF is Shira Lazar!

  • If there was a Chrome app for the iPad, it would decimate the Chromebook with no effort. (and this is coming from someone that doesn't like the iPad or Apple)

  • I'd never, ever ever classify Chromebooks as "affordable", especially in this country. The sooner companies start learning what an exchange rate is, the happier I will be

  • @Supabof93

Hear, sodding, hear! It's like they just knock off the dollar sign and replace it with a pound.

  • dont like when youtubers make fun of other peoples spelling, yea there might be the typical american who is lazy to spell check but there is A LOT of other people from other countries who try their best to communicate and youtubers make fun of them

  • When are you going to buy then review a Chromebook?

  • We look at these Chromebooks now and think "Grrargh! They're too expensive, they don't do enough offline, printers don't work, I can't install all my programs etc." (all very good points I should add), but this idea is in it's first days, it won't catch on straight away.

There were plenty of tablet PC's before the iPad, but it took some refinement before the idea finally boomed.

  • Android is way more useful than this, they should make an Android OS for Notebooks and have dual boot machines, Chrome OS and Android OS

  • my gran is a right noob with computers can u buy the os for normal pc's?

  • go home, get back

    better make other things

  • there is no point in chromebooks and thats why those reviewers didn't like it

you say its more affordable, but the thing is, you can get a normal windows notebook for under $500 that can run the chrome web browser with all its web store stuff plus still have access to your collection of cd/dvd programs that won't work on a chromebook at all so why should ANYBODY EVER BUY A CHROMEBOOK

it would still have to be an additional computer, not a replacement and thats what google is trying to do

  • Im confused, how is a 430$ laptop/netbook super affortable, or at least more affortable then anything else on the market?

I think that was one of the major reasons why reviewers didnt liked it.

  • @nikibabamovc also you can get a fucking netbook, for like $300 lol

  • everyone sucks up to chris's comments, lets thumbs up his comments because he might like you!! how about NO stupid geeks

  • Useless Chromebook!!!

  • The reviewers don't like it because they are also geeks like you and i.

  • Chris I think you should purchase a Chromebook, then you could review it and keep it if you like it, and if you don't give it to your parents or something. :)

  • i don't think reviewers should be able to review the chrome book, because is made for the average person like Chris said. Why don't we have at average consumer review the product instead? Cause we all know almost anyone looking at this video is going to hate the limitations of the chrome book.

  • Chromebook = waste of time

  • Can it at least watch videos I store on it or via a usb? if it could I would be alright with one...otherwise...probably just buy it and throw on mint or ubuntu lol

  • i don't want to sound like a hater but i cant help it. i think chrome OS is the most ignorant thing i have ever seen. if you still want a cloud OS use something like joli cloud. it has all the cloud stuff you want and it also has local computing as well. its a full blown OS with cloud apps layered on top of it. so you sacrifice nothing. but i still cant wrap my head around this whole cloud thing. i am a workstation/home server kind of guy.

  • Netbooks these days don't have the processing power to run a lot of software and most people use them just to surf the internet. So in essence, when offline, the Chromebook will be as useless as just about any netbook.

  • jury is still out, that says it all

  • Books like this would be good for middle / high schools i say.

  • @Rodier1128 It would be good if you learn how to use correct grammar right before you put up a comment.

  • If I am going to get a chromebook it would be an Acer. Don't see why I would pay more when I could get the same thing without the gloss for less.

  • Who is Shira Lazar? I think I've missed something... suddenly these "what's trending this week?" videos showed up...

  • $500 for google chrome. No thanks

  • Anyone see the similarity between the iPad and the Chromebook? "Just get online, surf the web, check e-mails"? Not even the iPad, just most tablets?

  • Your Reaction?

    LOL

    OMG

    EPIC

    CUTE

    WTF

    FAIL

    NEW YOUTUBE STUFF =D

  • Wanna get online? Buy an ipad 2 for a better experience! there is even a FREE Google chrome app :)

  • Chris, A few days ago Nokia gave a little sneak peak for the upcoming Meego phone the N9, Which at least in my mind looked interesting. But should a consumer buy a phone thats UI is ceased to developed by its manufacturer and why?

  • My mom wanted to start getting online so I got her a laptop. I found a $350 HP with 320 gb hard disc space and 2 gigs of RAM. I was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself as an extra back up laptop. This won't be worth it to me personally until they can charge around $250. That's just me though, I'm sure plenty of people will buy these.

  • How much will cost the notebook?

  • @jomirife - I'm sure it won't cost the notebook anything at all. The user has to pay.

  • @lockergnome lol?

  • @lockergnome oh, come on, don't make fun of his English skills. I know that you majored in English, but that is not right.

  • @lockergnome WRONG!!!!!!!!! the price is out

  • @lockergnome it costs the notebook a refund of about 420. costing the person 0 since its costing the notebook a 420 refunt

  • @jomirife $430-$500 USD

  • how much did they pay you to say that you like google chrome browser_?

  • I actually agree with you Chris... The ChromeBook is good for them that are the "average person"... I love the new OS... It's just not for me... But still I give Google's ChromeBook's a well deserved thumbs up for trying something new that will work well some time in the future.

  • JoliOS is definitely better than ChromeOS. I wonder, if it could be installed on the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook?

  • @xskydevilx What is JoilOS?

  • @jacobbubble2 Check the Wikipedia page ;)

  • @xskydevilx Link?

  • @xskydevilx why?

  • I wanted one until I herd the price.

  • My grandparents may like it. My step-grandfather wants just that - an affordable laptop that he can simply browse the web with, nothing more, nothing less. I've seen an Acer chromebook go for $350. Definitely not worth it for me. If it's nothing more than "a nice heavy paperweight" without internet access, count me out.

  • @davidcrandallmusic

    "a nice heavy paperweight"

Was that a Weird Al' quote? If so, you just made my day :)

  • @sporkafife Yes, that was a Weird Al quote =D

  • Google should send you one to review, I like the idea, maybe apple should take note and change White MacBook to this model, call it the icloudbook ?

  • I kinda want one.

  • Make it $200 and I will get one for my mom!

  • Does that mean I am dual booting atm with my chrome browser?

  • Why wouldn't you just use a smartphone? All the functionality of a Chromebook, plus a phone!

  • I guess for people like you and me chromebooks are pointless well I just don't get like they should add a feature that lets people use like something like microsoft office or something then it would be ok.

  • My hp laptop costs me 400$ got 2gb ram 320gb hard disk space and a fast processor, and yes it goes online too, hmm which would I rather......?

  • if this was 300 it would be way better

  • Ha anybody else ever notice that Chris looks like woodie of to story, but seiresly I'm glad someone else thinks the same about these cromebooks. My mom is getting one for her though it's good

  • You've been dispensing advice since I was born!

  • No need to spend that much money if you can download a similar os with peppermint os

  • @abjo20 Yep, Peppermint OS, Joli OS (Jolicloud), Puppy Linux, any of them will do. In fact they all have the "offline" abilities that he mentioned in the video. I bought a netbook for less than the Chromebooks cost, removed Windows 7 Starter and installed Joli OS. Been very happy with that.

  • @SeaofInfinity32 I didn't know about Joli OS....good job!!!

  • @abjo20 It's beautiful and in my opinion much more feature rich than Chrome OS. If I had to recommend one or the other to a "basic" computer user I'd go with Joli.

  • @SeaofInfinity32 I have not use none of them. But I heard of peppermint OS on the Going Linux Podcast...I run Ubuntu as my mean computer.

  • Ryan Dunn

  • My biggest fear is that as we are moving towards computers being in the cloud, ISPs like AT&T capping data per month based on plan. What happens when just using a computer over the internet becomes the only option and we are limited to using only 150-250 Gigs a month?

  • How is a $500 browser... affordable? Got Logic?

  • I thought these where coming out at a much cheaper price point? Not worth it at all if they com in @$350-500.

  • Thumbs up if you're the 305th viewer!

    ... *Crickets* ...

@OutlawLovesNewVegas - I agree with you 100% - you can get a $300 laptop and put Chrome or Chrome OS on it

  • its sounds like "smell you later !"

  • For browsing the web, check emails, being online, then I would rather have an iPad without a doubt :-)

  • whats up with the 3 finger salute, someone fill me in

  • @STarFishUltra It's supposed to be a "w" as in "w ww" in the start of any website.

  • does he say "will ya later"??

  • @STarFishUltra - E ya later!

  • @lockergnome

Exactly what do you mean with 'E ya later!'?

  • @lockergnome It really sounds like you say will ya later.

  • 500 dollars for a useless laptop I'll pass on that one but thanks anyway

  • Okay , hold the phone. A chromebook is a $500 web browser. Fine . Chris spent almost 3 grand for an apple computer. I saw an article where Iphone 4 we be on sale without a contract. For 650 0r 750 bucks . What is a tablet??? What is an Ipad??? I like this idea . I am not a geek ,but love tech news. 500 bucks or 3,000 bucks??? Better get both . LOL. Forget the haters. Play nice , Bob

  • I bought one out of curiosity. It suck's really bad,big waste of money. You would be better off buying a six year old laptop then this thing. It is just like one of those crappy atom net-book's.

  • @DrunkGamerNerd The atom netbooks are fine. They're supposed to be cheap with less functionality than a laptop or desktop. Except they can have more features and still cost less than these Chromebooks so long as they have a good OS installed.

  • @SeaofInfinity32 Yeah you know something you are right.Even atom net-books have more functionality. That is very true,so I really can't compare this to any thing else.Except saying chrome book, that alone will give explanation to it's crappyiness.

  • i was all for chrome os until i found out the pricing now if it was about 200-300 bucks that would be more worth it.

  • true, it really is 500$ for a browser

  • There's more to using a computer than checking email and surfing the web. Way more, in fact. Actually, I'd say the majority of stuff is NOT on the internet.

  • i think the macbook air is the computer of the future

  • the chrome book would be pointless for using on a flight, it's overpriced for what it is, it's just a web browser. the ipad is more of a full computer than the chrome book is.

  • Google could have made it more affordable....

  • Everyone seems to be missing the point of the chromebooks

  • @Warpurlgis - Which is?

  • @lockergnome People seem to be missing the point that they store almost everything in the cloud. They are only supposed to be for people that want to get online. You completely get the point, but I feel the critics you mention are comparing them to average laptops and notebooks which they are not. They aren't expected to anything but the web.

  • As a CR-48 pilot, the experience is way better than almost every netbook ever made and seriously, what on earth are you going to do with a windows machine on disconnect, the machine is perfect for the normal person, I think a lot of reviewers do not get it, some are just plain idiotic. I do think the CR-48 should have been sold, not the samsung.

  • LOL keep pressing 4... ROFL

  • @LittleLegion And keep pressing 5...lol

  • Love Google Chrome browser, but OS? Not happening.

  • Google is sucking balls

  • Now a days, to a lot of people, any computer (mac or windows) without internet is just a brick.

  • I think the chrome book is a great solution for a lot of average users, however why would an average user pay $500 for a chrome book which is web based when they can spend the same amount of money on a notebook computer and get so much more. Its less features for the same amount of money as something with those same features plus some. It just doesn't add up. I think if Google drastically drops that price point then its something to consider.

  • Wasnt this kind of a question about when the ipad came out...

Except I feel like the user experience has and always will be better on the ipad than maybe a chromebook. (But I have yet to have used a chromebook)

  • Do you make those cool animations yourself? (Background distracting monitors)

I've always stated this Chromebook (so far) is the perfect mother's day gift. Google (so far) isn't looking to impress geeks, they just wanna reach out to the general public.

  • $500 is too much for a less capable notebook.

Reminds of Apple and how they sell overpriced products that have missing essential features.

  • @Etherouge like what? problems? My MacBook Pro is the same exact price as HP's envy, with the exact same performance and with a way better build quality, Apple is in no way over priced, they just don't make a low end cheap machine, it's a proven fact that they have a small profit margin due to the expensive precision and quality that is put into these.

The Chromebook does need to lose a few $, it is overpriced.

  • @RCSonicjet they are overpriced period.

  • @RCSonicjet Its a better build? Let us all pause while I snicker.

  • When Chris puts on his CBS News Hat he tends to get extra dramatic

  • @khunopie - Dun dun dun!

  • I don't see a use for them. You can spend a little more (sometimes even less!) and get a full on laptop. I wonder if Chris is going to be picking one up for review.

  • They are not affordable compared to a actual NotBook

  • There's always a green line at the top of your videos.

  • At this time it appears completely pointless for me. I would rather use a laptop with all my data on my own hard drive.

  • just like duke nukem!

  • No offense, but I don't like the chromebooks.

  • They're not affordable, they aren't that well built, they look decent, not well powered, hardly any features. Nope, I will not buy one. And I will try to discourage anyone who wants to.

  • i'd rather have a netbook with Ubuntu and chrome... and that still isnt enough for my likings..

  • @Evansmustard What else would you need?

  • I have a CR-48, but I actually want to play around with one before I buy it...

  • Chris do have any consideration for those of us that actually believe storing all your personal data on the clouds of a gigantic corporation who has a reputation for datamining and saying eff privacy is a bad idea?

  • getting one for my gran, so she can do the things she wants to do without her getting confused with program updates and OS pop ups etc. :D the one she has now is windows vista..........

  • First

  • @LaxiMac A little late eh?

  • @randomname123ish Tell me why? I was the first non uploader to post a comment

  • What do you think? Are you going to pick up a Samsung Chromebook? Are you holding out for the Acer Chromebook?

  • @lockergnome I'm sorry, but I'm not paying $500 for an internet browser.

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas then why pay for a macbook?

  • @BlackflamezzProduct Because they work. //End of idiotic question

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas first off its / alone in order to say end no //end no // just / you are probly a mac user let me dumb this down. every operation system works. Mac will never be close to number 1 in compatability and is far from number one in anything (except price) 90% of people who own macs do nothing other then browse the web /argument

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas - Don't apologize, you're not alone.

  • @lockergnome i agree why would you buy the internet for 500 bucks

  • @joo1317 - Buying the Internet sounds like an interesting business venture.

  • @lockergnome well if your like my dad yeah it isn't a bad thing because all he does on his computer is serf the net. Oh and i was wondering what is inside of the chromebook i would say 1gig of ram and no special game card?

  • @OutlawLovesNewVegas

WOW!! They are actually charging, or sure I say ripping off customers for $500 for something that sure cost $150-$200 at tops, for what it does.

  • @lockergnome I'll stick with my MacBook Pro
