  • Aloha Lesley,

It's fun to tour your old ship with you. We all remember the words of Ratty " there's absolutely nothing so worthwhile as messing about in boats".

Remember for the children's sake that old boats have old paint, and old paint has lead. It's a nasty business the things they use to help keep boats alive.

    A hui hou,

    Thomas

  • Thomas thank you so much for that comment. I think that she's been stripped and repainted, I know her topsides were redone because I was the one doing it. Also some of the decking has been stripped out and replaced and there've been bits of remodelling. My father in law had young children on the boat and I expect it was sorted out then knowing his second wife. But I will check again that it isn't a hidden danger. We love our boat very much she's part of the family. Cheers, Lesley

  • Is there a better way to spend Father's Day? That is one cool old floater...

  • She's a classic yacht, over 70 years old and still whips along like a young lady when she wants to. We're getting the kids enthusiasm, safety awareness and confidence up before we sail with them. Joe was in his element and he got to sleep late, can't beat that Father's day. Cheers, Lesley

  • What a lovely old boat! I love sailing but haven't gone sailing in years and years-can't wait to see your next sailing adventure!

p.s. Your children are adorable! :)

  • Thanks, she's a great old lady and though age is taking it's toll, we love keeping her going. My son who is only 7, is very against all this modernising though! We'll be happy to have you along on our next sail, fortunately all my YouTube friends are able to squeeze on inside the camera or there wouldn't be enough room LOL. Cheers, Lesley

  • It's not a toilet on a boat, it's a "head"....don't ask me why. I hope you remembered to close the sea-cocks (ooo...err missus). I've seen what happens if you forget them and the "pointy end" it's the bow, but I'm sure you already know that...lol Great video and once again what a lovely old lady Leola is.

  • YouTube nibbled the comment? Yep I know the terms and can tie the knots! Most of my viewers are new to boats so I pitch it at them. If you say pointy end, it gives them their bearings and sense of the space. We're very sure with our sea cocks that's why dad's labelled them to ensure no mistakes now his memory is going. Joe and dad will take her out once more to fully check the new fuel tank and echo sounder. Can't wait to get out on her under sail with the kids, you must miss it. Cheers, Lesley

  • I'm learning new things about boats every day. Today I learned that I can sink a boat via the toilet. ;)

Fun video! I think crabbing kids are more fun than crabby kids.

  • Hannah was only momentarily crabby about not bringing crabby home as a pet!

It's all about letting water in to flush but not leaving the sea cock open or it will flush to the point of filling the boat with water! There are so many things to remember it's a good job my dad is labelling things. I made a private video - what to do with all the knobs, levers and whatnots. It's hard to remember it all when you have a four year old yelling and a jet ski wash hitting you. Cheers, Lesley

  • I love all those old harming quirks of your boat - I got a chuckle when you got to the new modern echo depth finder. LOL You're going to have some wonderful family memories aboard Leola that will carry on with Hannah and Max throughout their lives.

Lovely video - and tell Joe he did a fine job labeling that toilet!

  • Well you saw the old echo finder before so we had to show off the one I bought for Joe's birthday! We are looking forward to some pleasant trips up the river and a sleepover though it looks like I'll have to remember who gets to sleep in the pipe cot this time to be fair! My dad is the brilliant label maker as his memory is going but it's a great help to us too. You don't want to leave your sea cock open when leaving the boat! Cheers, Lesley

  • Looks a lot of fun. Hope you had a great time. :)

  • That old boat is part of the family but the kids are only just both old enough to do much sailing. Hannah had one sail last season to try it and loved it. Max lost his confidence a couple of years ago when the boat was ripping along almost on her side and it's taken a lot of coaxing to get him to feel safe again. Cheers, Lesley

  • What a great Father's day for Joe, and for you all to spend it like this. Great to see the kids so comfortable on the boat too, it will really help with their confidence. I bet you can't wait to sail now!

  • Joe really enjoyed his day (he got to lie in bed till 10:30 too!). The kids are used to clambering about working on her on dry land and they have to be careful then because of the height they'd fall. We just need to get them to feel as relaxed but careful on the water as the boat rocks. I'm very eager to be on the boat having fun. It's lucky all my YouTube friends can fit onboard inside a camera and come too. Cheers, Lesley

  • That was really cool Lesley. Never been on a sailboat before and always wondered what it is like inside. Thanks for taking us along. Can't wait until we set sail!

  • Joe thought I was mad filming the toilet and us opening cupboards, but I found it fascinating the first time I was aboard. He's grown up with boats and forgets it's out of the ordinary. They'll do one more run to make sure everythings working well with the new fuel tank then I'll come along with the kids and you guys! Cheers, Lesley

  • What a wonderful family experience! Boats look like a lot of hard work, but a family working together can be extremely rewarding :)

Unfortunately I get terribly seasick, I can't go below deck on any small boat or I'll be regretting it the rest of the trip and some time afterwards-looks like your children have sea legs though :)

We occasionally go crabbing at the pier in New Brighton, but crabbing from a boat must be very cool for the kids!

    (nice picnic too!)

  • Dad loves to sail so I used to sail dinghies with him 20 odd years ago. Mum can't stand the water! No good if you're seasick at all, I only get sick if it's really rough. Fortunately Joe had the boat when I met him (instant husband approval from dad) and loved to sail too. So now it really is a family affair, the kids help painting etc. Hannah's 4 so she's sailed once but we're getting their confidence and excitement up and will have a trip soon. Ah New Brighton, happy memories! Cheers, Lesley

  • I never thought about the toilet issue on a boat. YEAH, you would definitely NEED one, wouldn't you?

And I guess if someone's sitting there having particular 'trouble' then blowing the fog horn at strategic moments might come in handy too.

That looked like a really relaxing day.

    :-)

  • Well Curt the toilet hasn't been used much since I used to sail before Max was born, that's why it was so stiff. The guys can't usually be bothered with it and use a bucket which is emptied over the side! I've been on that loo in very choppy seas and it helps to have the mast to hang on to. Must tell Joe about the foghorn, you've got me LOL again! We all enjoyed the day very much, wish my dad could have joined us. Cheers, Lesley

  • That was charming, Lesley. Other than high tonnage ferries, my sole experience of sailing was on a friend's little Hobie Cat(amaran) on Lake Michigan, only facility a trampoline. The wind never rose enough to make it an exciting athletic endeavour, but I learned when to duck for a flying boom.

Your boat seems a great half-way house 'twixt my known extremes. You're lucky. Fascinating loo coverage! And bent pin crab catching brings back memories of childhood excursions to Blackpool.

  • I like to show things on YouTube that might not be an experience everyone's had. We are very lucky that Joe took over his family's boat when his dad moved to Cornwall. Now it's our family boat and a nice size for us. Yes ducking is an essential skill on a boat. I've sailed little dinghies with my dads sailing club but never a cat. I was so amazed they caught two crabs and thought I'll film the next but alas no more. Cheers, Lesley

  • this looked like a really fun day out lesley. i've never had the chance to go on a boat.

  • The beauty of YouTube, try before you buy life! Next time you'll have to come sailing via video and just sway in your seat while you watch LOL. Cheers, Lesley

  • I'm so sorry at arriving at this response so late! I just awoke and the calming sea was exactly what I needed to see :) Bless your beautiful family. Now that's the way to spend a Father's day! Well done and these are memories that the children will never forget. I must send my girlfriend Samsarajade here in case she hasn't seen this. This was brilliant! - John

  • I had a hard time loading it so I'm having to manage comments as best I can! My dad is very involved with the boat (the label maker now his memory is slipping) he's just brilliant at fixing things so he's a big help. The boat was Joe's dad's so that links in and now Joe is the dad on the boat. It was a great place to spend Father's day and Max and Hannah adore their dad and the boat. I agree memories are such an important foundation for life. Cheers, Lesley

  • A really lovely video and what a great way to spend a Sunday! I thought Father's Day was last Sunday and I went to put flowers on my dad's grave, still I am sure he saw the funny side!:)

  • I'm sorry to hear you lost your father so young Anthony. But I'm sure he was looking down on you and laughing when you came early to bring him flowers. We had an outdoor picnic but had to retreat to the cabin for pudding as we got one of those brief but quite heavy showers yesterday. Cheers, Lesley

  • Lesley, this is a great inside look at your boat. I almost felt as though I were there. My Mother's side is from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, a peninsula bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. Although she rarely spent time on the water, she loved her hometown so much, that I suppose I'm drawn to this in a special way. Oh! Wait. That's because you're special, and so is your family. ;-)

We invited my Mom over for crabs years ago. She didn't even know how to do it. HA!

  • I thought it might interest people to see in the cabin as I've only showed the outside really. I used to love crabbing as a kid. We have proper lines but they were left at home as we had a lot to bring aboard this time. Looking forward to you joining me for a sail next time Betty. Cheers, Lesley x

  • Lesley, I wish I could join you for a sail in person, but I'm grateful for these opportunities.

If I ever win the lottery, though ... ;-)

  • That's the amazing thing about YouTube it really does give us the opportunity to feel we've had a taste of things we may never be able to in life this side of the screen. I should start playing the lottery, I have so many friends I'd love to visit in faraway places. L

  • The foghorn moment is priceless!

What fun, and a great way to spend Father's Day. That boat I'm sure enjoyed having you folks visit!

(running to find her bright orange life jacket to join the gang on the upcoming sailing vid...)

  • I should have filmed Hannah screaming at the top of her lungs but it would have broken my camera mike I think. With her we don't need a fog horn, good job 'cos I didn't even know we had it, I thought Joe was joking! I think it'll be a tight squeeze but I'm looking forward to taking all my YouTube friends with me when we set sail again. I think Leola did enjoy us being on her as everything seemed to work well for once! Cheers, Lesley

  • Your children are precious! Looks like a real fun family day out. Wish we had your weather here. Couldn't step outside for fathers day. It was 100. Love your videos and always look forward to them.

  • Thank you for such a lovely comment. It was a variable day and we had quite heavy showers but nothing too bad while we were on the boat. It meant we ate our desert inside, which is a bonus compared to a picnic completely outdoors. 100 would be too hot for me and I like it hot! Cheers, Lesley

  • Excelent Lesley, the boat's looking great and lot's of fun! I wouldn't want to sit with my leg's either side of the mast on a cold day Lesley, be a bit choppy where you wouldn't want it! Hehehe. great video Lesley and happy father's day to Joe, rock on dude!

  • Thanks Jim, at least when it's rough at sea you can hold onto the mast so you don't fall off the loo - I'm serious! We wanted the kids to feel as comfortable on the boat on the water as they do on land with just me and Joe there. We're planning to sleep over so it was fun for them to explore. Joe had an ace day, I'm sure you did too 'cos I know you're a dad who knows he's loved. Cheers, Lesley

  • Great video! The boat has so much character - I wish I could crank my engine by hand, really useful if there is ever a problem with the batteries. The drop down bunk in the forecabin is such a good idea too. Cheers

  • Thanks, Joe thought I was mad filming that but I said people are interested! The battery is all fully charged but we wanted to make sure that the crank was working just in case. The engine can be a pain but it's also beautiful in itself. The bunk's comfy too, I've slept in that a few times and been rocked to sleep. Cheers, Lesley

  • Thanks for the look around! Sailing next! Yippie! :-)

  • Joe and my dad will take her out for a last check to make sure everything is working well with the new fuel tank they've put in. We need it to be absolutely safe if we're sailing with the kids. But yes I'll be bringing all my YouTube friends with me when we sail, you might have to squeeze up a bit in there LOL. Cheers, Lesley

  • Good one thank you:-)

  • My videos aren't usually this long, glad you liked it! Cheers, Lesley

  • Can't wait to see it under sail! Or motoring along either one! I hope you got the loo fixed. Have you ever traveled very far in it?

  • Joe and my dad will give her another sail to iron out the wrinkles with the new fuel tank etc then I'll take you out with us. The loo hasn't been used for several years (sh the guys can't be bothered and just use a bucket) so it just needs to limber up again. Probably less than 25 miles, we went out to sea, round the coast then sailed up another river right into the heart of Ipswich. We also sailed into marriage and that seems to be a bigger journey! Cheers, Lesley

  • Happy Fathers Day Joe! I'm a little late...sorry. A starfish!! I would love one of those. Thankyou for the cheery afternoon Lesley. hugs, Chris

  • I'll pass the wishes on Chris, hope your family all enjoyed their day too. The river is very tidal so even though it's a river it's got a lot of saltwater and is practically the sea at it's mouth. We loved seeing the starfish and it was still alive so we put it in the water. We get seals up the river sometimes when we sail! Cheers, Lesley

  • You have the cutest family, & that boat looks like a lot of fun.

  • Thank you very much. The boat is over 70 years old so we have to regard her quirks as a lot of fun otherwise we wouldn't enjoy sailing her! Cheers, Lesley

  • Hi Lesley. I love to go on these adventures of yours! LOL That looked like a great way to spend Father's Day. -Jim

  • Jim you take me on your travels and I let you watch me flush the loo, hardly seems a fair exchange LOL. I promise next time we'll go somewhere with the boat though. Cheers, Lesley

  • thanks for sharing your lovely day with us.

    hugs, bonnie

  • You're welcome Bonnie, hope you had a great day too, ours was very tiring! Cheers, Lesley

  • Lesley this video was so informative. I know you take boating for granted but there are lots of us that have never been sailing. I love the character of your boat. Your children are so well behaved and beautiful . Thanks for sharing your family with us.. Dolores

  • Thanky you Dolores, Joe was laughing saying why would you film that! But I know not everyone has seen things like a boat toilet and I still think it's fascinating even though he grew up with the boat. The kids are 7 and 4 and I think we forget how well behaved they are sometimes, thanks for reminding me. Cheers, Lesley

  • Very cool letting us see how you get it ship shape - literally. can't wait for you to take us out on your first trip of the season. Looks like everyone worked pretty hard to get her up to speed.

  • Danny this was such a mishmash I didn't know if it would interest anyone. I tried to show some of the things that fascinated me when I first saw Leola. Dad and Joe have put such a lot of work in but I think they also get the most out of it. They will do one more sail to iron out teething trouble with the new fuel tank and lines, before we take the kids for a sail. We need to feel we have 100 percent reliability with kids this age aboard! Cheers, Lesley
