I must say I lived there for 8 1/2 months and it's not paradise but a place to work and make "Great" money, compaired to the lower 48. The down fall is the winter. Yes it gets cold, in the -40's with heavy winds. But most jobs are indoors. I was working at ERA Aviation which is aired on the Discovery Channel "Flyin Wild Alaska" which was an experience. Very nice video. People actually live that far? And they eat whales and drink apple juice that costs more than potato bread in Oregon. The place would be a nice challenge to live. Now they make good money though, oil and such...How do they mitigate attacks by polar bears? Do people only come out during the day and hide at night? What is the midnight sun like? Do people get good night sleep or do you have to keep that one eye open for the bear? this is scary place too...wow like a dream...

The prices are sky high alright. Reckon you have to eat local. Get used to seal polar bear & walrus & you will be fine. Kill your own. Ages since I went fishing but I'd do it every day with those prices.

I visited there for a week about 3 years ago. Two ways to get there, boat during the summer thaw, or aircraft from Fairbanks, there are no highways. Every thing in the store is flown in, that's why the costs are so much. Wonderful, friendly people, and yes, I'd like to go back some day.

just if you are interested in such most Northern places - check on youtube Russian cities of Norilsk and Murmansk - those are the same latitude as Barrow, but bigger - I am just facinated with people who live in such places !
