my fav, by far, is pavarotti. he sang with such ease and his voice was so natural. his diction was perfect as well. he was authentic, the virgin ear can have problems recognizing the other tenors, but pavarotti? you listen to one word and you know it's him singing.
i think there's too much snobbery in the classical music world and it doesn't look "cool" to name pavarotti as the best tenor because he crossed over into popular music and he was very famous and commercially succesful.
What a wonderful video!! After reading all the "this one or that one is the best" comments on the other videos it is refreshing to hear this compilation. It just illustrates how great an aria "Nessun Dorma" is!!
I had the rare privilege to hear Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras sing this live at a Three Tenors Concert at Tiger Stadium. Despite the setting and acoustics it was an unforgettable thrill!!
I took my Dad who is a huge Lanza and Caruso fan and it was almost heartbreaking to see hi
Suzuki Samaurai......no disrepect intended, although my comment will undoubtedly be deplored by many fans of Andrea Bocelli's, to wit, the guy simply does not belong in the company of the other tenors you've presented here.
Please understand that it's very hard to get recordings that fit together, because of the different volume, quality of recording, etc. I did this just for fun, and obviously i think that there are many many singers that deserved to be on this list, but it was not possible.
@SebaTooth1 LOL I would not go that far, but there is one version of Turandot that he sang very musically (as opposed to just letting that huge voice go),
worst one??? pavaortti? hahahah!.. i dunno how old u are.. but im only 23... and heard almost all the tenors that sung opera... but bloody hell. pavarotti possessed the best sustained high notes... in all time with so much refinement... :)
You are halfway right. IF we are considering the WHOLE role Calaff it´s not for a lyric tenor. BUT the aria Nessun Dorma lives it´s own life. Jussi Björling made this very popular in the 40th. IMO the allower top version is the one recorded life in Stockholm Concert hall 1944. He gets a halftone down towards spinto here. You´ll find it here on YouTube under: "Cesarsalgado 1972"
Weird that you have Corelli as your avatar and don't have him, the greatest Calaf ever, in this compilation. Bocelli? Not an opera singer and he can't sustain the line even in this little bit. Kraus? Great singer but not one you think of as Calaf.

Bocelli????Why???Where is Mario del Monaco,Franco Corelli??

Scroll down until the video isn't visible. Now, listen without knowing the identity of the singer. This will remove many biases.
I find they are more equal than one might guess.

But you put the worst one:Pavarotti.

I'm 30 and I maintain what I've said.
In my opinion, Pavarotti is not as good as he's supposed to be: he just sings like a gondola man who tries to seduce ladies.
Del Monaco had a sober and deep voice and a great technic.

What about Bjoerling?

bjorling kraus pav were great tenors but not best for this role, domgino is overate d and why even bocelli on this list?

Pavarotti thought differently: there had been opera singers (like him and the other two) and then there was once Bjorling

Luciano Pavarotti is the best tenor the world ever had! Thanks for his best and ultimate performances and memoirs! LONG LIVE OPERA
icze09 2 years ago 2
could of put corelli, del monaco, di stefano, gigli all in there! Bocelli shouldn't be in that line up! but thats my opinion.

I know, and I agree with you...but it's hard to get records that can fit well together, because of the quality or speed of the record...

Great, relly!! but why you didn`t write Jose Carreras on the end??
Huljic 3 years ago
because in the "vincero" sequence Carreras, Pavarotti and Domingo sing together.
Multiple-tenor recondita armonia coming soon! :)
