We use both verbal and movement cues. In this case, it is a movement cue and she is waiting for him to notice and reconnect. She praises the moment he starts to turn his head back in her direction.
Why this way? Because we want to have a dog who makes it his job to keep an eye on the handler but the handlers job to see and then verbally cue the dog.
Verbal cues are GREAT - there is just more beyond them. And any dog or any age can learn!
