  • In my youth, I dealt with a girl that fits in exactly to this. The timing of Peter Sarstedts song did chock me then. I was just a teenager. Now, after so many years I feel very sad when I hear this son again.Years goes by.

  • sophia loren was so stunning in her younger years.

  • March of 1969, when this song was out, was a great time for music. It played with "Wishful, Sinful" by the Doors and "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel.

  • Does anyone know the name/painter of the Reacurring picture of the man on a chair watching the girl sleep?

  • @phumstea Eli Levin (b. 1938), Woman in bed, c. 1986, tempera/board, 12'' x 15''

  • The Darjeeling Limited movie bring me hear.

  • woo i was the 1000th like!! one of my fav songs of all time!!!!

  • My life is so different from the woman's life in this song. I felt like I was being shown the contents of what would normally be a private love letter sent to a unique woman who is greatly loved by the singer of the song. I enjoyed the experience..thank you for posting this unusual, interesting video!

  • Obviously, Wes Anderson made me love this song (Hotel Chevalier)

  • Peter knew Sophia Loren when they were children and wrote it about her. I think that is why it has such amazing lyrics and passion to it. He was relating what had happened in true life. Sophia is wearing that topless swimsuit in the pic. Amazing!!!

  • @Ell1992 Actually I read that he wrote the song about a girl he once knew who died in a fire. I always thought it was about Ms Loren, but apparently this is not the case. Hope this helps :-)

  • I can not believe that youtube "age restricts" this video, presumably because it has a couple of images that might be considered rude. Are they really so prudish?????? A girl in a one piece covering her breasts and a painting of a reclining nude???? My goodness, kids see worse than that on TV! Perhaps they have issue with their mothers.

  • This song was sung to me by the most handsome man I've ever known. He is truly the love of my life and I can not live without my Mothman. <3

  • @DawnGolia I think that this song was written for you Dawn. My heart only beats for you!....Yours is truly a "Beauty that goes on and on" <3

  • Although I enjoy the song, I find the singer patronising, assuming and annoying. He sounds really smug and pleased with himself that he's got one over on the woman he's singng to. It also leaves me wondering whether he also resents successful women.

  • You're right, but you don't know the circumstances around it. Maybe the girl is really unhappy, and maybe the singer is right.

After all, the meaning of a song is what you want it to mean.

  • Obviously, Wes Anderson is repsonsible for my loving this song... I imagine that I'd love it still even If I wasn't blown away by Hotel Chevalier, but Wes Anderson's work a la Natalie Portman and Jason Schwartzman just dropped my jaw. I fell in love with the mood of this song instantly. "Would you like to see my view of Paris?" Simply beautiful, as they stand facing the adjacent building - Jason handing Natalie the toothpick... Utter contentment. My dream climax in Paris.... My destination...

  • the full vershion from my youth great hear it agin.

  • I always think of the actress catherine Deneuve when I hear this song

  • who eats your heart when you fart ...you tart

  • what the hell

  • im 27 years old and i think that songs really good

  • Boulevard Saint-Miche,juan-les-Pins , Saint Moritz,Naples..grate work!!!!

  • Thank you for posting this! Unfortunately, I am unable to watch on my iPhone.

Could you change the syndication settings to allow viewing via mobile devices? Thank you!

  • Howie, THX for putting flash on the bones finding all those illustrations of the names. when I first heard this song in the 80s, w/o the benefit of google...I didn't know what all those names meant.

It's good to revisit this rendition of this song.

I think this and Charlene [Duncan]'s "I've Never Been to Me" form perfect bookends.

  • @flungingpictures - I last commented on your presentation 1 yr ago.

    Still evokes the same feelings.

  • @nitenitenitenite The artist is Eli Levin and the painting is called "Woman In Bed" x

  • can anybody tell me what's the name of the painting with a nude woman on the bed, and who is tha artist

  • is not a song for someone recently jilted tho, drive them over the edge

  • This really is an ageless song.... Just Beautiful.

  • Light bulb just went off. So, this is what FOTC was spoofing with "Rambling Through The Avenues Of Time". That made me oddly happy.

  • This idea was given from an angel I guess

  • To the one i loved and lost. so meaningful it still brings tears to my eyes, all your wealth wont lead to the happiness we had.

  • hum really bored and cute ^^.. Anyone want to chat or swap pIcs

  • love this very much xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Always loved the song and really enjoyed the video you've put together. All credit to yourself (and Peter Sarstedt, of course!!)

  • beautiful song and video

  • This a great video and I love the song. I am not much when it comes to the technical stuff, but if you still have the original on your computer, could you delete this and repost? I don't know, I am just trying to help. Good luck.

  • What a drag! This is so brilliant, it deserves to be seen and heard by everyone, not censored by a handful of twisted, psychotic jackasses. I haven't a clue, technically, how to help, sorry. Just wanted to add one more "THANK YOU!" to Howie. I'm one of the "old guard" who was around in '69 and loved it when it first hit. And in the nearly 40 years since there's not a more haunting, unforgetable work of music out there. Howie has done an incredible job of putting it to video.

  • Maybe Lenna has something to do with the flagging.

  • this is lovely...... thanks for the effort.

  • i knew this song from movie 'Darjeeling Limited'

    ..

    Thanks You Mr. Wea Anderson

  • brings back happy memories

  • I absolutely love this song... amazing!!! :-)

  • What is the painting of the clothed man looking at the nude woman on a bed? It looks almost like a work of Edward Hopper, but it's not one of his pieces. Does anyone know who painted it?

  • Thx for posting and the illustrations. It took me many years before I found the LP of this...

    =

In case you don't already know, the female perspective of this song is Charlene's "I've Never Been to Me"

These two songs are book ends.

CHN idom say, "Never question a 'hero' what his roots are."

Marie Claire must have seen "Gone with the Wind" and taken to heart "I'll NEVER be hungry again!!'

  • What picture is that at 2:48?

  • To Me, this is one of the most important pieces of music ever released and probably the most memorable piece of beautiful adventuring landscaped marvels of music since I was a small boy when I first remember heearing it, and it has not changed it STILL sounds EXCELLENT the signature of a quality timeless piece of music which I have just sent to my Beautiful Girlfriend, Where Do You Go To MY Lovely? Where do you drift off to Dreeem to? I LOVE YOU CHRISTINA XXX <3<3

  • Whe I was young, I wished someone would write a song like this about me, as it was what I wanted my life to be. Now I have escaped "The back streets of Naples" I can fully understand the lonely places escaping your past can take to. Mmm

  • @vgreencan - well the song was really well done, but your post is even better - so many spaces between the lines suggesting some strong emotional content that has brewed for some time. if you turn writer send my your book! ojs

  • Wow!!! thats great thanx

  • very very well done

  • very nicely done. thanks.

  • they dont make them like this anymore.

A true classic and one of my all time favourites. the lyrics are just amazing and its like a story.

  • so no one knows who this girl is at 2:46???

  • that's lena, the image processing girl. i forgot her last name but searching for lena should suffice.

  • the girl in 2:46 is a swedish playmate from 1972 (miss november) by the name of Lena Sjöblom and that is from the photoshot she did for playboy magazine.

  • thank you

  • Is this video flagged because of the nude painting? Has the world gone mad?

  • I just figure that some soggy brained doofis hit flag by mistake while aiming their cursor at playlists. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. Otherwise, yes, the world has gone mad.

  • @mitcydupresuk

IRONY: Maybe because of this cubistic (?) picasso painting - the Nazis did not like this kind of art, too IRONY OFF

  • howie whos the girl at 2:46???? great video man

  • Why in the world was this video flagged!?!? It's excellent.

  • no idea and now it gets a lot less hits...thanks for compliment.anyone know how to get it unflagged?

  • Aren't you American, by chance? :-) Or a minor seeing tits for the first time in his life? :-)

  • Ha ha ha. You know what is this mean: " "

and scroll up, and you will see that (I think funny in this case) sentence.

    !!!

    Peace!

  • Why is this video only for adults?

  • Because some puritans must have had a problem seeing the human body in its natural way. I am not sure if it is the European side of the Atlantic that has troubles with this...

  • It's the American side with the puritans...

  • Becose some American......

  • awesome, thank you for posting

  • what a great tune man

  • This was played in the Hotel story of The Darjeeling Limited, right?

  • Wow, that was this was pretty cool, different!! Thanks for sharing Ruiggie!!

  • Did he release this in the States?

  • Oui.

  • Verses 2 and 6 are additional to the single version me thinks!

  • Didn't realise there was a longer version. Brilliant.

  • what is the painting at 1:23? anyone know?

    i love it

  • Eli Levin "Woman in Bed" 1938

  • Also i have this on single and verse 3 is new to me????

  • 2 additional verses I think from the 'single' version!!

  • Why did i have to confirm my DOB to get to see this video....UNBELIEVABLE?????

  • Yes, this is really incredible. Eli Levin´s famous painting is a work of art which shouldn´t be compared to some trashy stuff.

  • Comment removed
