In my youth, I dealt with a girl that fits in exactly to this. The timing of Peter Sarstedts song did chock me then. I was just a teenager. Now, after so many years I feel very sad when I hear this son again.Years goes by.
March of 1969, when this song was out, was a great time for music. It played with "Wishful, Sinful" by the Doors and "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel.
My life is so different from the woman's life in this song. I felt like I was being shown the contents of what would normally be a private love letter sent to a unique woman who is greatly loved by the singer of the song. I enjoyed the experience..thank you for posting this unusual, interesting video!
Peter knew Sophia Loren when they were children and wrote it about her. I think that is why it has such amazing lyrics and passion to it. He was relating what had happened in true life. Sophia is wearing that topless swimsuit in the pic. Amazing!!!
@Ell1992 Actually I read that he wrote the song about a girl he once knew who died in a fire. I always thought it was about Ms Loren, but apparently this is not the case. Hope this helps :-)
I can not believe that youtube "age restricts" this video, presumably because it has a couple of images that might be considered rude. Are they really so prudish?????? A girl in a one piece covering her breasts and a painting of a reclining nude???? My goodness, kids see worse than that on TV! Perhaps they have issue with their mothers.
Although I enjoy the song, I find the singer patronising, assuming and annoying. He sounds really smug and pleased with himself that he's got one over on the woman he's singng to. It also leaves me wondering whether he also resents successful women.
Obviously, Wes Anderson is repsonsible for my loving this song... I imagine that I'd love it still even If I wasn't blown away by Hotel Chevalier, but Wes Anderson's work a la Natalie Portman and Jason Schwartzman just dropped my jaw. I fell in love with the mood of this song instantly. "Would you like to see my view of Paris?" Simply beautiful, as they stand facing the adjacent building - Jason handing Natalie the toothpick... Utter contentment. My dream climax in Paris.... My destination...
Howie, THX for putting flash on the bones finding all those illustrations of the names. when I first heard this song in the 80s, w/o the benefit of google...I didn't know what all those names meant.
It's good to revisit this rendition of this song.
I think this and Charlene [Duncan]'s "I've Never Been to Me" form perfect bookends.
EVERY SINGLE THING IN THIS SONG POINTS AT ME ME ME. ITS ALL ABOUT ME, A TRUE REFLECTION OF MY OWN LIFE. I CAN RELATE COMPLETELY TO THIS SONG. I ADORE IT.

@howie235 What a drag! This is so brilliant, it deserves to be seen and heard by everyone, not censored by a handful of twisted, psychotic jackasses. And in the nearly 40 years since there's not a more haunting, unforgetable work of music out there. Howie has done an incredible job of putting it to video.

You're right, but you don't know the circumstances around it. Maybe the girl is really unhappy, and maybe the singer is right.
After all, the meaning of a song is what you want it to mean.
