I taught myself to play tennis by watching videos of pros online as well as your vids, and I can confidently say that I rank at a mid-high 4.0 ntrp rating after 6 years of play, thanks for everything FYB!
I'am 56 years old and always had a bad serve. I followed your instructions and in 3 month of practicing and reviewing yours lessons I can now tell that my serve is very good. YOUR ARE BY FAR THE BEST OF THE NET..THANKS
I think there's a little something very important, that disserved almost a topic, it's the jump that occurs just before the impact. Many pros start with their front foot almost parralel to the baseline, and even if it's just 45°, it's impossible to rotate and come back facing the net without leaving the ground. The timing is: leg extension with racket drop/jump-rotate/impact. It may sound like a detail but i think it's important.
watching slow motion, we can see the pros rotating their arms as a follow thorugh after contact. Please tell me what's the purpose of this and should I try doing so?
hey will, i noticed my tennis serve wasnt great so i went to youtube. i stumbled upon your serve videos, and ever since then my serve has been getting better and better. i just wanted to thank you for these videos and keep making them. AGAIN THANKS A TON.
First things first, these videos are great and have helped me a ton. I know you can't do much without seeing my serve motion, but I just wanted to ask if you have any recommendations for my second serve. I play varsity high school tennis, so I wouldn't quite call myself a great player, but I've got a pretty solid serve motion and never know how exactly to hit my second serve for a good balance between consistency and not hitting something that will get destroyed. Any tips?
kinikini, the follow thru is the consequence of other things that happend prior hitting the ball. You want to acelerate the most as you are making contact with the ball, thats why you need the followthrough, and usually people that follow through well, its because they made good contact when they striked the ball
this is great info. i just saw a trailer "The Keys to Learning Movement". This guy has also done coin catching and is really awesome. His dvd is done in the spring. Search on The Keys to Learning Movement.
this is the best instructional vid out on youtube on how to serve!! you were a lot more help than my coach. all he says is hit up on the ball over and over and i have no idea what he's talking about. amazing vid
amazing.. i would like to say.. it's the clearest and most convincing youtube instruction ever.. combining those pro players cast away learner's cynical doubt about to whom we should learn from. you should be a real couch...you are awesome, thanks for sharing. have those snapshot and degree angles really make it easier
ok this is a tad bit off topic to the video but in terms of highschool tennis would a 30$ wilson racket from wal-mart vs. a really expensive one make a huge difference?
My serve is kind of weak because i havn't developed a strong serve yet. even though my serve is week i'm putting my everything i got into it, so i usually land pretty far into the court and sometimes find my self stuck if i get a good return.
Could you show us how to avoid that, along with proper post-serve position?
The technical aspects of the follow through are the same... however, there are some slight differences because of how you were swinging up to and at contact. The follow through on the kick serve will be further to your side.
Thanks a lot, my name is Alex and I am from Argemtina, but I live now in Spain, congratulations IHave never seen a fully comprehensive video lesson step by step, with pros examples in slow motion an excellent presentation, bravo!
My follow through is down the right hand side instead of the left (I'm right handed). Does this indicate anything wrong? Should I try to consciously follow through down the left side? I took a video of myself and my racquet points down ok just after contact but follows through down the right hand side. I notice that my body is leaning towards the left and that my right shoulder is much higher than the left even long after contact. Great video clip. Really usefull. Thanks, Gerry.
Hey Anlolar -- hard to know for sure w/out seeing your serve. However, pros finish to the other side of their body, as we suggest, so it sounds like you might be doing something wrong. Do you have a video posted on youtube?
No. I need to redo the video because it has changed a bit since I applied the principles in your 'tennis serve stance' lesson. Hopefully I do it soon.
potentially, yes. If you check out the video "charlzz stroke analysis" on our channel, we're about to offer a very similar service to what you'll see.
for me, i wouldn't request a video analysis like that, i would just like to know what to fix, etc... i'll try to upload a video within the next few days.
Thanks alot! I've watched all eight videos and it clearly helped understand the jump serve better. I've been needing improvement on my serve and this may help.
awesome series of videos much better than other videos on utube

every time i hit the serve, it ALWAYS goes far... how can i not have this happen?
goodie2toes 3 months ago
@goodie2toes angle the racket down more, practice your follow through and try to get the racket aimed down in a slightly faster time

OMG...here's my question....How does the follow through affect the shot? Don't forget though, that the follow through is everything AFTER contact!!!

Question: for follow through, right after you hit the ball, do you bend your grip forward or stay straight with the arm?

In terms of equipment what can make a huge difference to your game is the string tension and how do you hit the ball..
Obviously, a great racket alone won do you any good if you suck at tennis.

So what's the difference on the follow through with the Kick serve; is the follow through to the same side of your body?
Great video btw

Your serve seems pretty powerful, around what speed is it? Also how tall are you?
Mrmagiccity27 3 years ago
from my guess, he looks about 5'9-5'10, and his flat serve is probably 60-90mph
TibxB0i 3 years ago
at the end.
"But he's also broght the racket around to the other side of his *cuts out*"
'Of his, WHAT, exactly? ô.ô"
But, jokes aside, best tut of serving I've ever seen. And now, if my serves fail, I have someone to blame it on. ^u^ =P
