Michigan didn't even belong on the same field that night, VT was raping mICHIGAN up and down the field all night. byersca54, this is not the NFL, in college, the play is over once his elbow hit in bounds with possession of the ball. Touchdown. furthermore there isn't indisputable evidence to overturn the td. Who cares about records and wins? so what! vt might have not won with the td, but it shouldn't have been overturned. It was a spectacular catch!

Even if a catch technically isn't "complete" in mid-air... then just as there the ground can't assist in making the catch, if there is possession, the ground can't cause a fumble as well... or am I wrong here?

the fact that the ground jammed the ball into his chest is the very definition of the "ground aiding in the catch" rule people

and to all who are talking about the ball moving as "physics" im sorry but "physics" doesnt apply to this rule...no matter what referee crew you have, if a player catches the ball and the ball hits the ground and moves in his hands or arms...they WILL call it incomplete...period

The process of completing the catch occurs after he comes down with it. The ball can move in his hands when he comes to the ground, but the catch isn't completed until after that. By that time, his elbow, shoulder, and the ball were all out of bounds. Sorry, it's not even close people.

@HumanitarianJ At 49 seconds, he hasn't completed the catch. You don't complete the catch if you come down with the ball and it moves around. If the ball moves around in your hands, the catch isn't completed until afterwards. Pause it at 50 seconds and he's way out.

@TheNapper18 That is not what determines whether or not it is a catch. A catch occurs when the receiver has control of the ball with a firm grasp. The ball is going to hit the ground and move a bit as a matter of physics. Coale had control of the ball, that makes it a catch.

@babblepsych No, a catch is not completed once a receiver has a firm grasp. If the ball is going to come down, move around in his hands, and be complete, he has to actually be in bounds. His elbow, shoulder, and the ball were all out by the time he completed the catch. The catch is not final while he is in mid air.
