could you pleeease forward us to a website that goes over your drone technique? Your chords are out of this world and I'm dying to learn and see how to make music like this!!!
I've got a page at my website that shows some of the chords, pm me for the link since youtube apparently doesn't let you link to external sites in comments fields.
This is as good as it gets as it was filmed with a first generation digital camera. I'll be doing a new version as I replaced the battery on the HD cam I have just two days ago so watch for something soon.
@chillichomper I'm playing chords on a n electric guitar in a suburban basement thru my live rig. That's it. No synthesizers, no midi, no sequencers or any of that. What are you doing?
its all well and good playing these voicings but the progression has to go somewhere .. which this does not .. no matter what you play you need an understandsing of tension and release :)
@killerdll You misunderstand. It's not a "song", there wasn't a "progression" employed - it was an improvisation performed around eight years ago used to demonstrate a particular sound.
He's using special effects, I believe, and is also playing chords. Drone guitar is just extended "drones" used for creating spacey and atmospheric sounds.
I don't know. It sounded good to me. Drone or sustained pitch or whatever. Sounds more like your strike the chord and then turn the volume up and before you strike the next one you turn the volume down. Well, thats the cheap version. Nice job aliensporebomb.
Guitar, no pedals - into Mesa Boogie Studio preamp with a rackmount lexicon vortex processor in the effects loop running a custom preset I programmed into a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 amplifier. Thanks for your interest.
In my own case I was in a band with another guitarist and the predominant sound of the music was flatted fifth barre chords. I needed to come up with something that would give us a more open/airy type of thing without going to keyboards so we weren't all fifths all the time.
Also, glad to see someone else knows who Wayne Johnson is. He's actually my favorite guitarist and I've seen him live many times. His guitar synth stuff was and still is cutting edge...probably the best guitar player most people have never heard sadly!
Cool Stuff! I experiment with the same technique using guitar synth and reverb/chorus straight guitar with a volume pedal through a bunch of amps. Reminds me of a huge pipe organ when you get it up loud enough to rattle the windows!

Wow, just doinging massive research on vortex and its huge learning curve. I never really post any comments anywhere, but i feel incredibly motivated to tell you how floored I am at hearing this, I have it running on a loop now. Very amazing, I will have to track this device down, Thank you for bringing me closer to whats been lingering within and has not been realized until now.
you are wonderful. i have a drone demo myself, but more overdrive oriented. i would be happy to hear what you think, considering your sound is the absolute best i've seen here
Man, that is GREAT! Can you share your settings for the Vortex? I just bought one and having trouble getting a sound like yours. GREAT job! Do more video's like this one.
Jackson Soloist or Heartfield EX-2 guitar into Mesa Studio preamp with a Lexicon Vortex in the effects loop (there's a TC Electronic G Sharp in there now too) into a Roland JC-120 amp. That's it. I've got some stompboxes but they weren't used for this track.
Its kind of sad but I could listen to stuff like this all day. Could you give me your chord progression? it was quite nice.

I question the title "Painful", though - some I find quite relaxing. Kenny Barron voicings galore - harder on guitar I imagine :D
