Classy shot of two greats here. The 4-8-4 was a logical step in keeping passenger limiteds on schedule on the same steep grades over which the Union Pacific Alco Big Boys and Challengers and Southern Pacific Lima AC-9 cab-forwards were pulling freight.
Both these locos are oil fired. The SP 4449 was built as an oil burner,it never was coal fired.I rode behind 4449 back in 1997 on the ex Spokane ,Portland &Seattle(now BNSF) main line on the north bank of the Columbia River to Wishram and back to Portland.Great memories!
I love steam engines, but do you think its possible to run them dry, but have a small diesel engine inside the tender pushing in order to reduce emissions?
Southern Pacific was how the south was connected to the west (texas to california) and Union Pacific was part of the Transcontinental railway...(cross country railroad (golden spike))
Just learned about this in history class....great railroads, too bad SP is gone....same iwht the Milwaukee Road
Hard to believe this great video of a national transportation treasure brings out so many wackos and their "steam is damaging to the atmosphere!" crackpot theories about H2O (water) being as damaging to the environment as C02... LOL! 4449 is but a remnant of the grand days when transportation via rail was a grand enlightening experience. Not the same being stuffed into an aluminum pressurized cylinder cattle-car airplane these days. Keep up the good work and long live the real locomotives!
Cockrouch2008, We've had enough of you. if you dont like trains dont watch videos of them. nobody listens to you anyhow. the airline industry looks like it's gonna go back to being for the upper-class only and the auto industry is getting battered as well (but not as bad as airlines.) so It's gonna be running round the clock for Amtrak,BNSF,UP,Norfolk Southern,CN,CP,CSX and Metrolink. they'll need to tap into every resource they can. even old steamers.
If people on that train drove their cars instead of taking the train, the combined emissions from the cars would have several times MORE than the train's emissions.
Are there any videos on here covering the christmas time derailment from a couple years back? I know its not glamorous (it wasn't the engine's fault, as I recall) but I think it would be interesting to see. I've only read a text article about it.
Beautiful sight. I wish these wonderful engines still reigned supreme on America's railroads. Imagine what a sight it would be to see this all the time in small towns and big cites across America from sea to shining sea.
A couple of centuries back the idea of steam engine came into being and history will revive itself, however, with some new ideas. Think of future locomotive with mini fusion plant, thus, producing energy with water because fossil fuel is on decline and engineers are looking for new sources of energy which is sustainable.
Beautiful loco on the point there. The UP 844 is nice, but the SP 4449 rocks! You get a hell of a view out of the back of the observation car too. I've been lucky to have been able to ride it quite a few times. (I'm bragging here)
I bet the view is a lot better than the rear facing back seat of the old '73 Vista Cruiser wagon I rode in growing up.
There was one time when the barbecue fell off the roof at 60mph and my brother and I had an awesome view of the carnage. Who knew that it could flip three times before hitting the freeway.
a beautiful video, to compliment an even more beautiful train, that train is one of my two all-time favorite trains, my other favorite is the challanger
that was just about the best video i have ever watched i live where the delaware and hudson would go so i never get to see that big of a steam loco...and 2 of them would make me faint!!!!!!!!!!!
This is just a guess- I think they idle the helper engine until they can't maintain speed with the main. Notice in this video it appears that the 4449 is working but the 844 is just idle.
@powerlinefixer they probably would never need 844, the 4449 has 5500 hp and a top speed of 110 mph, that was a stroll in the park for her. And to 1singlet, in a steam engine with an experienced engineer they will know just where to open the throttle up to in order to match the speed. However with steam it is not important to match the speed because it will cause no damage to the drive train
Was this a public ride or an OCS? It looks like they are using the Union Pacific Executive cars. The theatre inspection car brings up the rear, that is impressive if UP opens that up to the public.
Well yes, powerlinefixer,I'm a on the support team for a British steam loco and I have to say steam is expensive, but theres nothing like the sheer exhileration of riding steam.
First of all, most of what your are seeing in this clip is steam. Second, if you were to take the people on that train and have them drive cars to their destination, the cars would put out tons more greenhouse gases than that train. Also- the 4449 often burns waste motor oil to produce steam, eliminating a hazardous waste. Maybe you're the one that should stop puffing smoke into the air.
I understand where you are coming from, but I think you should do some research. Water is also a greenhouse gas, even more potent than CO2. Steam is derived from water and is thus just as damaging.
I ran water in the sink and determined through extensive research that water is not a gas. Also, if there is too much water in the air I think it falls down in the form of rain or something.
Are you suggesting we should dehydrate ourselves to death by stopping all treatment of saltwater and freshwater so that it is potable?
Besides, steam is just condensed water - it is the stuff we see in CLOUDS. Clouds of all things, you loonie. Learn science before you open your mouth, thanks.
Steam trains can run entirely on biofuels, ranging from wood to biomass distillates. So Steam can be Green, too -- in some cases even more than diesel trains!
Let's not forget that they could also potentially be built again in today's day and age to use a form of thermodynamic locomotion - using its own steam power to generate electricity, and at the same time, using the electricity to heat the water to produce steam! (Generators on rolling stock, anyone?)
@lorenhd The main problem with steam is simply the amount of water they take. Although it's not so much an environmental problem to be going through 100 gallons of water every mile) but it's simple space constraints. A massive consumption like that needs to be replenished very often, which requires many facilities and frequent stops, not to mention the cost of actually buying all that water.
However, the 4449's fuel consumption per-passenger (on a full train) is better than a Prius.
your probably one of those Algore followers who thinks that global worming is going to be the death of us. grow up. steam engines are a very clean source of energy.

Yes. 844 ran on coal but I think ALL UP steam engines (3985 and 844) run on oil. I know 3985 does.
