  • Anyone have any info or course of action concerning Parsonage Turner Syndrome (Scapular Winging) ? I have suffered with this for 4 yrs & am showing signs of atrophy. I have been unsuccessful in finding a medical doctor or any other "professional" that will be straight with me.

  • This is a VERY misleading video - Go read the medical research on frozen shoulders - generally they 'thaw' after 8 to 12 months. They are often triggered by another injury nearby and you can certainly get benefit from physical therapy - especially in the thaw stage as the muscles surrounding the capsule are very likely in bad shape after 6 months of trying to limit movement...

  • i have had a frozen shoulder since November 1st 2010 when i was in an auto vs 18 wheeler accident i have been to physical therapy, ART which is active release techniques i went to him for 3 mounts physical therapy for 6 months, now they say i meed shoulder manipulation while they put me to sleep. i dont hold out much hope, i only sleep about 3 hours a night and the pain is constant.

  • Massage therapy would help this

  • I think I have the beginnings of this. My doctor here in the UK just looked for symmetry in my shoulders and said I might have carpal tunnel. I hate the NHS. Unless your name is Duke of Edinburgh or QEII, nobody takes you seriously.

  • Massage therapy, specifically NeuroMuscular Therapy, would work well too.

  • Typical western medicine approach: if at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer! I had a frozen left shoulder and it ran its course without receiving any treatment in one year. Now my right shoulder has it, and although I may try some mild stretching, I'm confident it will resolve itself in time. I didn't see much improvement in the woman when she was on the show.

  • .Nothing helps,I don't wish that pain and all i have to my biggest enemy, looks like i have a frozen shoulder, and I feel so helpless.....because i have only 1 arm

  • Now i m 7 weeks after surgery and my shoulder is stiff, 0 motion, , my hand, my fingers are stiff, my shoulder blade is swollen so much and part of my neck is swollen, i can t sleep at night, taking pain killers every 4 hours, I sleep at night most 3 hours, that's all.I'm doing all those exercises and strechings at home 3 times per day what they do with me in PT

  • First of all, i m sorry about my English. On April 2011 i had done MRI, and they found I have Rotator Cuff Tear.3 weeks in PT didn t help, than i got Cortisone shoot, it didnt helped, than June 14 i had Rotator Cuff Repair surgery, 7 days after surgery i visited my doc, he send me to PT, there was a line in PT and i was waiting 1 more week to get there,

  • (cont'd).

I had cortizone injection last week from an orth specialist, it did relieve the pain. As I can not stop working, I cannot see the real recovery, and I am waiting for PT. I hope there are some miricle patches that can relieve the pain.

I have been searching internet everyday for the treatment. today I found people suggest cooked fresh ginger and garlic with liquor patch for 2 month over night can help, will you try?

  • I had work related shoulder injury (nurse) last year, had one month PT and it was healed. because the turning and lifting at work, the pain comes and goes, never paid too much attention until the Jan, U/ S showed bursitis and fluid under biceps, 7-8/10 pain at home, sometimes a sudden movement causes 20/10 shooting pain, takes 1-2 minutes to relieve. I have been taking ibuprofen and neprosen(had fluid retention) and tylenol all the time, lots of ice and heat treatment and strething at home.

  • Let's wait and see tomorrow, I'll keep you posted, but also please consider that my experience might not work for others, and the exercises I'm doing are also very painful, but I did a lot of sports in my life I still do, so maybe my body reacts differently, I have maybe more determination, and I can handle more pain...

PS. Sorry for such a long description, I hope will work till the end, and if so, maybe for others too.

  • My shoulder looks now visible inflamated, but I really can do moves that last night I couldn't even imagine....few hours ago I was thinking at surgery, then PT and all the costs, plus the period of 1-2 years to recover...so trust me I was scared!!!...now, at his moment I'm thinking that probably I will not need surgery, just few PT hours with a professional chiropractor and exercises at home, myself....

  • I came home, took 2 pills of Ibuprofen (first doze as a shock painkiller) than 1 pill each 4 hours, also, each hour, 2 rounds of remedies: first bengay all over my shoulder, and after 1 hour ice for 30min....and I keep repeating this procedure for 6 hours...also, meanwhile I start moving my arm slowly looking for the maximum pain and hold my arm/shoulder in that position for few seconds then release and again

  • In the morning I start looking online for an explanation, I went to buy some painkillers, bengay and a lot of ice, to calm my pain and I looked for a chiropractor near by, called them for an appointment. They told me that before doing anything to visit an Orthopedic Doctor and to do MIR/Xrays...thats for today, considering now beeing 2.52 am when I post this, tomorrow I'll have to do all this.....

  • To start with the begining, 2 or 3 months ago I start haveing small pains in my shoulder right when I wake up, at the begining I thought I slept on my arm or so...but I started to be concerned after a while because it didnt get better...last night I played soccer and I felt on my right palm/hand but still nothing seriouse...only later on when I went to bed I start to feel huge pain in my shoulder and I coldn't sleep all night long, I was suffering extreme pain.

  • hi everyone, last night I started to have great pains on my shoulder and it happened right when I went to sleep, I couldn't sleep all night long because of pains, I was craying how painful it was...so here we go, my frozen shoulder experience.Today when I write all these I feel unexpected and unbelievble better, and because I read all ur comments I decide to post mine in case will help somebody.

  • i have frozen shoulder ,the shot did not help.been in pt now 12 times .i still can not move my shoulder, pain med,s do not help.sleeping is impossible.dr.has sent me for more pt for a month to see if this will help.now my arm hurts all the time.

  • I have suffered from frozen shoulder (I call it the CURSE) since December 2010. I was in PT for a month (2x's a week) and got a little more range of motion but stopped because I wasn't progressing anymore. I am still doing the exercises at home (those help a lot) and now going to Acupuncture and getting massages every 2 weeks. I'm also taking Flexcerin (maximum strength) which is helping with the inflammation. My Acupuncture told me never to put ice on my frozen shoulder, but moist heat!

  • I have frozen shoulder (have had pain for about six months) and just finished 20 physical therapy sessions. I've only gained a little mobility and the pain is still horrendous. The cortisone was NOT recommended because it breaks down the tissue if used over long periods of time. Dr. wants to do manipulation but I am hoping for another route. Taking sesame oil, vit. d, probiotics and exercise. Any other suggestions?

  • I had the cortizone shot & it did wonders. I started PT w/in 3days (2x/wk) and iced the top & back of shoulder. I regained an enormous rge of motion over a 2 wek pd. but now, i have hit a wall. The key is reducing inflammation, & unfortunately ibuprofen (800mg) seems 2be the drug of choice,so I'm taking it 2-3x day w/ meals. Q: Anyone tried those topical treatments that claim to be for sprains? Some heat the shoulder, others provide cold relief? Describe the brand, cost, sensation & results pls.

  • Read "The Frozen Shoulder Workbook," by Clair Davies. No surgery, No Physical Therapy. Self treatment at home or from a LMT who has good training in Trigger point therapy. It is an excellent book. The author himself suffered for a long time with frozen shoulder and was able to help himself because he found no relief with physical therapy and he did not want surgery.

  • left shoulder being manipulated 25th of March, can hardly wait and scared at the same time, heared it'll hurt worse for awhile, can't imagine it hurting worse. as it is, the pain knocks the breath out of me, and sometimes off my feet. can't take N-SAIDS, had massive heart attack recently with heart failure.

  • @kimkongaroo i can say i feel ur pain.i also have frozen shoulder,i can not take n-saids .the shot did not help and pt hurts so much,.so now going to pt for 4 more weeks to see if it will help.i will take really hot showers 4 times a day .it seems to help a little.

  • @Rochie1967 hurts like hell, so sorry, went in 5 weeks ago and had it manipulated, they knocked me out and also administered a shoulder block which totally blocks all feeling in the arm for about 14 hrs. ask Dr. for Nucynta for pain, works great! I can sleep! and you get coupon from Dr. pay no more than $25.00. hope this helps you. good luck. shoulder moves normal but can't dig in back pocket yet.

  • @Rochie1967 well, it's been awhile now since manipulation and therapy, and I'll be darned but the pain and restriction of movement is coming back! been moving it around everyday, using a pully doing wall craws etc. never did reach my back pocket, but I tell you what, I'll never go back in for manipulation again! as soon as I stopped pain meds, pain was back where it was before. guess just have to wait it out for 2 yrs. it supposedly takes. how is yours doing?

  • @kimkongaroo my shoulder is still frozen, and now i have crps .the pain has went to my hand,my fingers are stiff and i cant move my wrisk. how are you .

  • @kimkongaroo ouch!! pretty much the same as you, still have never been able to reach my back pocket, can't grip very well with my hand and it hurts to raise it over my head. feel the same as you about repeat manipulation, never again! pain meds worked for awhile but can't afford monthly Dr. appt. for refills, and like yourself, it's gonna be a long 2 yrs. the pully feels good until a couple of hours later....ouch! good luck to you, keep in touch.

  • i'm in the process of fixing my frozen shoulder (the hard way). lay down on my back with my hands behind my back. lay down on my back with my hands behind head. that covers rotation for both ways for both shoulders (only one shoulder is messed up but making sure the other shoulder doesn't get frozen). i'm tolerating the pain as i go. it's becoming easier. eventually, i'm going to add pull-ups and some other type of shoulder manipulating exercise and see how well my shoulder holds up.

  • @AshugarValheru i can,t even put my arm behind my back or head.

  • @Rochie1967 yeah, i couldn't do those things either. but i forced myself to. the reason i knew i had that potential range of motion was because my other arm could reach. so i used that arm as a reference. i don't recomment my procedures because i know my body and its limits. the pull up was difficult as well. in the beginning i would just hang with the arm and that in itself was difficult. today, my shoulder is running around 99 percent.

  • @AshugarValheru i have a q, my shoulder has drop .now i,m uneven.did this happen to you.

    i look really uneven.

  • @Rochie1967 my shoulder did feel uneven with my other shoulder. it was locked into place from all the scar tissue. when i banged my shoulder into a wall or something, pain would just shoot all over the place. i think anyone can cure themselves from fronzen shoulder. it just takes a lot of willpower. just make sure the injury that caused your shoulder to freeze is healed. then, stretch to rip the tissue. use a workout machine if you can. i heard total gym works wonders.

  • u never use injection. .because when the patient hasnt got the pain he elavates her sholuder further and we dont have any arthrokinematic move in joint so he elavates her shoulder by means of rotation of scapula and the rythm of scapolahumeral will going to miss ..and this is very difficulte for treatment of frozen shoulder

  • Well, I had a frozen shoulder and went through months of PT, a cortizone injection, an x-ray, and an MRI and my pain and range of motion just kept getting worse. I finally opted for the manipulation under anesthesia and while under - the surgeon scoped me and cleaned out my scar tissue. I am a week post op (a week tomorrow) and I already have less pain and can move the arm significantly. I'm still having aggressive PT, and while that's no picnic - my pain compared to before the surgery is less.

  • @ImSuperHaute

I wanted to add that I have not taken any perscription pain meds for the last 5 days. I have taken some over the counter meds (Ibprofren). I have been icing the shoulder and that's all I have needed for the pain. I have no regret having the surgery done.

  • @ImSuperHaute nice to know ,thanks for shareing.

  • NO NO NO NO NO! Cortizone!? people... nueromuscular/ massage therapy is perfect for frozen shoulder! stop using drugs as a quick fix! massage also breaks up scar tissue fantasically! has anyone even considered looking into fascial adhesions which is essentially the connective/ 'scar' tissue anyway which IDA ROLF spent her whole career healing! and what about the MRI before he ever had his hands on the patient? he could found all that out through palpation learned early in massage school. freaks

  • what a joke! medical literature does not support use of tens for pain. how about the doc ordering a xray with no history of trauma and a MRI right off the bat. typical overuse of testing. cortisone, even worse. did you catch how she lifted her arm on the show and when she lifted it in the beginning in his office. NO DIFFERENT! As a PT i have seen numerous cases like this over the past 13 years. i can't believe health care providers still don't grasp what actually is happening here.

  • xray checks for arthritis.. cortisone inj works instant miracles albeit short term. getting rid of pain and restoting fujnction is best thing u can do for a poatient

  • @orthocarept I am a doctor and I do sometimes order X-rays without a history of trauma. The last x-ray I looked at just today had a spondylolithesis and I wouldn't have known it without an X-ray and there was no trauma. Physical Therapy is a nice tool, but it is just that, a tool. As a doctor I have to concider many things that you do not as evidenced by your X-ray without trauma. I do agree that there is a lot of over testing, but we can be ruined by one mistake. Good luck

  • (continuing) My doc had me take a lot of ibuprofen or aspirin for the pain (and now I am allergic to them - aaarghh), and sent me to a physical therapist. The PT got me doing mobility exercises with a over-the-door pulley device and moist heat treatments, plus visits to him. It took months, but it worked and I got ALL of my mobility back. He encouraged me to research the condition on the web, but only after he knew I understood that it could get better without drastic measures like surgery.

  • I had a frozen left shoulder a few years ago. What I learned was that it is a three part process: 1.) the extremely painful onset period, 2.) the actual frozen period, which doesn't hurt that much, and 3.) the unfreezing period. The entire thing lasted around 18 months for me, and I understand it can go to two years. The woman in this video looks to be at the end of the onset and moving into the frozen period. Surgery is NOT the only recourse if what they are trying fails.

  • I agree the injections do nothing. I had more pain after the cordisone shot. no more movement than before. Then it hurt so bad there was no way I could even attempt to move it. The doctor didn't give me anything for pain except Mobic which again did nothing after finishing the bottle. Physical therapy was out of the question. I guess my next place is the operating room. At least it will be over without anymore issues.

  • @thefather1961

pain is an indicator of dysfunction that sets in when there has already been much abuse. The worst thing you can do is not move your joints due to pain. The focus should be in returning function, then pain will eventually subside, that's why any pain meds are only masking the core problem. mechanical problems must be addressed mechanically. Pain meds may help in taking the edge from the pain so you can move the shoulder, but you must move it or lose it.

  • Totaly agree with robspt. very disaponting video that doesnt describe the real treatment protocol of treament for frozen shoulder. The tens is useless unless you do some passive stretching than it would be usefull to mask the pain. My approach iontophoresis with acetic acid or dexamethathon, ultrasound, manual therapy. I get my patient to 160degrees flexion in 1-2 sessions

  • @yuriym1 i agree with you also, the use of anti-inflammatory meds... with this said AROM to the pt's extent followed by PROM would deff help increase overall ROM! Frozen shoulder isn't rocket science to fix haha

  • Very disappointing approach to treating a frozen shoulder. How about utilizng good manual therapy including soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, and myofascial release. TENS units are of little help if the soft tissue isnt looked at.

  • @robspt, I use manipulation in conjunction with mobilization, massage, myofascial release, trigger point, PNF and PIR and it works like magic in increasing ROM.

  • Good video, anyways, the injections are worthless, bc. they dont do anything to the real problem and wear off. TENS is for pain management and it doesn't increase ROM it releases endorphins, the real cause of frozen shoulder is not pain, is the swelling, Cryotherapy can help a lot, US and exercises are the best alternative, sorry for me being so conservative on this video, just an opinion, but good video overall.

  • I've just encountered this problem, so I'd be interested in hearing more from you Oisi89.

    Are you a PT ?

I went to the doc with mine. Still waiting for X-ray results. He didn't order an MRI. He said mine "was not frozen" although its an impingement even though my symptoms match all I've read about frozen shoulder. Offered my the shot .. which I declined for now. No medication. He scheduled me for PT but I'm not sure what they'll do yet.

It aches pretty much 24/7 and pain wakes me at night.
