@PureTrueMetal I have the new album with Stu Block. I haven't listened to it all the way through, but from what I heard, I was impressed. And that's a good thing because when they announced Stu as the new guy, I wasn't happy at all.
this shows that ripper is the superior vocalist by far. if barlow, the best iced earth singer can't handle his fill in's vocals then it;s obvious who the man is! jon you fucked up and fired ripper due to wanting to make easy money. shame on you.
notice how Barlow has to drink water every time in this song, on almost every live videos... this song is really pushing him to his boundaries.... it's Ripper's song, although I prefer Barlow much much more. Iced Earth's music has to have deep deep bas (or low low baritone) vocals... and Ripper just can't deliver that :( so he's great, but not for IE.... I hope Stu will have the deepness to step in Barlow's shoes on albums like Dark Saga
OSEA NADA!
I prefer Barlow over Owens anytime. But this song was written during the Owens era and it's specific for his voice. So even though Matt is a great vocalist, he should sing this song in another vocal style.
Somebody should have told the singer early in his career that there could only be one Rob Halford. This band looks funny on stage. I think they suck, thanks.
@dethmag Well this song was originally sung byt TIm Owens
You know he sang in Judas Priest for some time when Rob left during the nineties and he pretty much started out as a Halford clone. Matt Barlow(current and classic IE singer) is his own man and sound very good singing songs that were made for him.
@dethmag following this line of thoughts somebody should have told rob halford in the early years in his career that there could be only one robert plant and only one ina gillan ;)
@dades92 but.... this guy sounds almost identical to some Halford. I don't know when Rob Halford ever sounded like Robert Plant or Ian Gillan. Halfords a better vocalist then both those dudes anyways so like I said.. There could only be 1 Rob Halford.
He doesn't sound close to Rob Halford and no Halford is not better than those 2. Rob is more versatile with his high scream metal thing. Just because he can do more doesn't mean he is better. Robert learned to do more tasteful things with his voice, I say Ian and Rob can be whiney in the high register like how Robert used to be in his early years.
I am not really a fan of Rob or Tim's softer voice. They are very nasally. I am not saying that they aren't good or versatile. I think Plant could do more with his, he could be whiney but then he would do something more straightforward. A lot of these singers have a tough time singing "tame" in a soulful way. Instead of being powerful in a soulful way.
this album (framming armageddon, great album) has so many difficult vocals for a live performance... and we can see it here... also...matt and tim are SOOO different singers... and this song is owned by ripper... just imagine ripper singing ''i died for you''... its just not right...
Matt Barlow is fucking awesome...BUT...This song was definitely not for him...maybe Setian Massacre or A Charge To Keep would've definitely been more in his range. Then again, I have a few audio bootlegs from this tour, and it sounds like he was battling one hell of a cold. When a lead singer gets a cold or respiratory infection, it almost totally fucks their voice until they're healed.
A+ for Effort, cause singing Ripper's stuff is pretty intense.
@icedone08 Matt only needs to sing the verses an octave lower.. he nails the chorus I think, everything else is good but I don't know why he tries to sing the verse that high, he obviously can't do it ... and no offense - I can't do that either and a ton of singers can't and never will.
I watched this live in Slovenia. he nailed it perfectly..And it allways sounds better live..Sound quality here is awful. can't judge him just by this.
I love all of IE's songs better with Matt Barlow then Ripper, except this one.. not that Barlow did a bad job.. I just think he tried to hard to sing it like Ripper
Wow h really shouldn't sing the rippers songs. he sounds like shit. Matt is fuckin awesome. but NOT singing the rippers songs. Tim is great ! love him. but Matt needs to NOT try and sing these songs.
I don't really give a damn about who's better between Barlow and Ripper, but it's painfully OBVIOUS that Barlow CANNOT sing this song for shit!! He can't hit the high notes IN KEY, at ALL!! You can tell he is struggling to hit every note BAD!!
@IcedMaidenUSA it doesnt help when he's trying to sing it like ripper. all he'd have to do is simply lower the key to his own comfort zone. barlow can hit high notes to a certain extent, but he's not a naturally high singer like ripper.
I don't know, I love the stuff with Ripper a lot, but with Matt Barlow it just feels more like Iced Earth. I knew the second that Matt left that he'd return eventually (They all do) so I always looked at Ripper as nothing more than a temp.
I hate how people bash Barlow for his performance on this song. I saw them on this tour and he hit every note to every Tim song spot on. Tim is an awesome singer, don't get me wrong, but Barlow paint's masterpieces with his voice. The saddest day in IE - Matt leaving. The happiest day in IE - Matt's triumphant return!
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!! And this song is even better with matt than with tim.
This song has not been written for matts voice so it's hard for him to hit ne notes... Nevertheless he is the best there ever was. Owens sucked terrible with iced earth. Matt was and IS iced earth!
at very high notes... but who the fuck cares... IE doesnt have tons of those and if they do there in barlow's range. so ripper can be a good replacement for halford all he wants. but IE can keep barlow who is actually a unique singer w/ unique styling, not a fuckin carbon copy. but go worship ripper and his god awful solo album. (dont get me wrong i respect owens he is a great singer but not for IE.)
Every singer has his limitations. You can't expect Barlow to sing this one perfectly, just like Halford couldn't do a low note in his entire gay leather life.
Ripper is better at singing high, which he sings falsetto anyways, nothin special. least barlow sings high correctly. now if ripper could sing songs like dante's inferno, angel's holocaust, creator failure, etc as good as barlow then maybe id agree, but ripper blows nuts at almost every IE song. where as barlow can do a very respectable job w/ the whole IE catalog.
only one thing matt = Iced Earth real voice and that never change, ripper is better for judas priest in iced earth the real funs want matt and noone else!!!
what we need to remember is, that Matt has a really low voice, he calls himself a bass baritone and even though he can hit really high notes, he cant do it for a whole song. Rippers live of this isnt better... yeah he hits notes better but he doesn't have the passion or presence that Matt has
ya i do personally perfer the rippers vocals for this song...i guess barlow tries but he just dosnt fit with it...but john's guitar playing is awesome in this song!!
I was there too. Right on the barricade on John's side. The second band was called Saviours and to say they sucked would be an understatement. Worst live band I've ever had the (DIS)pleasure of hearing.
fuck that. ripper was good for this song and a few others. but sucks singing real iced earth songs. cuz old iced earth is better than this. lol ripper raped the trilogy and other songs... ya enough said. he sucked on the great IE songs.
even though dickinson is not the original singer of iron maiden. but i will agree with u Barlow is a great singer, but only on the stuff he was originally on, they need to stop playing the stuff they did with ripper, because barlow obviously can't hang with vocal ranges of rip. it's a completely different game with ripper. i mean come on u can't tell me he actually sounds good on this video unless your tone deaf.
This is also a live recording from a possibly not professional camera. I will always stick with Barlow in IE. Even though I have alot of respect for Owens as a singer
They really need to retool a lot of the Ripper songs for Matt. Both are very good singers, but have different styles. Matt has a lower high end for his range, though it is still pretty high and it is as large as Tim's if not larger, and he does the growls a lot better. It is annoying that when they re recorded the Framing Armageddon songs they just redid the vocal track rather than actually rewriting the song.
Please do not hate me! BUT I dislike the vocals of Matt Barlow, this song sounds teribble with him!!! Tim 'Ripper' Owens is the right man of that kick a** song!!!
I'd love to hear Matt do When the Eagle Cries and Hollow man. I think he'd to well on those. Those two songs sound like they would be good for Barlow.
I love Iced Earth, and love both The Ripper and Matt Barlow, due to the fact that I got into Iced Earth just after The Ripper joined, which meant I had no real 'loyalty' to Barlow. However, I would say that songs like this, from The Ripper saga, should stay with the Ripper. Matt's voice is clearly struggling, it's not in his natural key, and he's not half as good at falsetto as Tim Owens. The fact is: they were two different singers in terms of style.
I dont know if he was struggling. It sounded ok to me but I do agree, this is a Tim Owens song. Both have great styles that suit the respected singer perfectly
i think he should change the falsetto at the beginning to a roar. lol Matt Barlow doing Death metal. that would be epic. just once. an amazing roar. he just cant live up to Ripper's scream on this song.
I like Matt Barlow's voice, but this song is intended for a tenor or a counter tenor, like Tim Owens. This is one of those songs that if a baritone like Matt sings it, it sounds like crap.
His falsetto is not pretty, and why not? Because he is a baritone, not a tenor or counter tenor. But he gave it a good try though :)
it could be because Tim used "full voice" and Matt only a thin falsetto, but Barlow could have hit the note like Owens if he really wanted, both have about 4 octave full vocal range
glad to see someone shares my opinion ;) In fact almost all power metal singers are tenors or counter tenors because it works well with the "epic" style/sound of the music.
Although Iced Earth is power/thrash metal, it still has a strong power metal element to it, which is well suited for tenors, high baritones can hit the notes, but it isn't pretty, understandably.
This is the one Owen's song I can deal with... Matt is the only true voice for IE... Always been a fan, and since The Ripper joined, I stopped listening, and I just haven't gotten back into it because of Owens... He was decent though...
He can't hit the high notes. Tim Owens was better at the high notes, and Matt Barlow is better at singing the lower range notes. I like both singers, though.
it would be really cool to be arrested and then be pistol whipped in the face by barlow that would be metal lol anyway long live iced earth and good metal!!!
ummm not at all, he sounds bad cuz he was sick for the first half of this tour when i was talkin with him at the NYC show he said he felt like shit the whole tour.
OMG Barlow killed the fucking song ! Tim cant sing others as better as Barlow and Barlow also has nothing in common with Framing Armageddon album. He shoul not sing the songs from the "Ripper" period ! He just sends them to oblivion ffs !
A man with some sense! I agree with you on the Framing Armageddon album, but it's because Barlow has a voice that isn't a direct copy of Halford. He fucking destroys anything Ripper did on Declaration day though, and probably would with that whole Glorious Burden cd.
i agree i mean he doesn't ruin it but the guitars were still tuned up and his voice just didn't fit but when they re-make part 1 I know they'll fix it.
i dont know what you guys are complaining about, this is a tough song to perform but its a good song, and matt delivers. tim rules too. one may be better than the other, but why dwell on it? they BOTH rule. you guys should be fucking ECSTATIC you get to hear EITHER of these guys.
what in the hell are you talking about, there is, and i repeat, is only one man right for Iced Earth and that is Matt, Tim is good, but no fuckin Barlow
He is such an amazing singer, but it is impossible to get his voice as high as Owens here. It isn't a bad thing, its just his limitation, and Owens can't go as low as Barlow. Its still good..
bastardoutofbodom i agree with u and barlow has way more range than owens, i also think barlow just puts his own personality into the song. i think it sounds better than tims live one, it sounds way more badass especially in the chorus, even though its not as high pitched like the original
Matt Barlow = Great Mid-Range, Tim Owens = Great High-Range, Stu Block = Great All-Around!

TwatDetector 3 years ago 2
I dont know if he was struggling. It sounded ok to me but I do agree, this is a Tim Owens song. Both have great styles that suit the respected singer perfectly
Si6shot 3 years ago
I believe he was also sick when he was performing on that night. so that may have something do do with it. Just saying.
JPM2875 2 years ago
I never knew he was sick on that night. I suppose that could contribute greatly to how he performed it.

Fantastic video Matt sing this song very, very good, but Ripper too.
Two Metal Gods!!!!
iloveicedearth 3 years ago
i think he should change the falsetto at the beginning to a roar. lol Matt Barlow doing Death metal. that would be epic. just once. an amazing roar. he just cant live up to Ripper's scream on this song.
I do prefer Barlow though. He IS iced earth.
Monolithan666 3 years ago 2
I like Matt Barlow's voice, but this song is intended for a tenor or a counter tenor, like Tim Owens. This is one of those songs that if a baritone like Matt sings it, it sounds like crap.
His falsetto is not pretty, and why not? Because he is a baritone, not a tenor or counter tenor. But he gave it a good try though :)
matthias66 3 years ago
it could be because Tim used "full voice" and Matt only a thin falsetto, but Barlow could have hit the note like Owens if he really wanted, both have about 4 octave full vocal range
Chronologo 3 years ago
Matt actually uses a thin head voice for most of his high notes!
Ripper ocasionally used a strong raspy falsetto akin to Ian Gillan.
And they are both baritones! Owens is a high baritone with a lyric voice and Matt is a mid baritone with a dramatic voice.
PennyDreadful1 2 years ago
yeah, matt only needs time to adapt the song to his vocal technique, I know we'll se him on a better performance of this song in the future
Chronologo 2 years ago
I agree with you 100%
LufielIsacariot 3 years ago
glad to see someone shares my opinion ;) In fact almost all power metal singers are tenors or counter tenors because it works well with the "epic" style/sound of the music.
Although Iced Earth is power/thrash metal, it still has a strong power metal element to it, which is well suited for tenors, high baritones can hit the notes, but it isn't pretty, understandably.
matthias66 3 years ago
This is the one Owen's song I can deal with... Matt is the only true voice for IE... Always been a fan, and since The Ripper joined, I stopped listening, and I just haven't gotten back into it because of Owens... He was decent though...
CriticsConfession 3 years ago
He can't hit the high notes. Tim Owens was better at the high notes, and Matt Barlow is better at singing the lower range notes. I like both singers, though.

tim does way better at this, 100%

may be this is not matts BEST performance....but he is still better than the rest of the world. Matt rules
btw was this song written for rippers voice...not for matts...
and i have seen matt singing this song on the rock hard festival 2008 in germany....AWESOME!!! this video tells us wrong about matt;)
SlaveToTheDark 3 years ago
it would be really cool to be arrested and then be pistol whipped in the face by barlow that would be metal lol anyway long live iced earth and good metal!!!
raykanobi85 3 years ago
I like matt barlows voice, but this one sounded better with owens singing it. Nearly too high for barlow.

looks like the venue is crumbling under the crushing riffs
jimmie302 3 years ago
i dont know.. i think he CAN perform this song just as good as tim owens, but he does not here.
that is sad, because he proved in songs like "dracula" that he can also sing veeery high.
i think he should have some more tries then he'll get better
Metalwurst666 3 years ago
I think he should just sing it like he'd sing it and not try to Owens.

Barlow does Barlow songs best...Ripper does Ripper songs best...enough said
trojandynasty85 3 years ago 2
OMG Barlow killed the fucking song ! Tim cant sing others as better as Barlow and Barlow also has nothing in common with Framing Armageddon album. He shoul not sing the songs from the "Ripper" period ! He just sends them to oblivion ffs !
AlexOne82 3 years ago
A man with some sense! I agree with you on the Framing Armageddon album, but it's because Barlow has a voice that isn't a direct copy of Halford. He fucking destroys anything Ripper did on Declaration day though, and probably would with that whole Glorious Burden cd.
jwilliw 3 years ago
he should not sing this song he ruins it
JBetal88 3 years ago
i agree i mean he doesn't ruin it but the guitars were still tuned up and his voice just didn't fit but when they re-make part 1 I know they'll fix it.
RBLX2008 3 years ago
barlow is a great singer, but i have 2 say that ripper does this one better. matt was struggling on the verses. no problem with the high notes tho :P

mostly because this is a Tim song and not a Barlow song..

i dont know what you guys are complaining about, this is a tough song to perform but its a good song, and matt delivers. tim rules too. one may be better than the other, but why dwell on it? they BOTH rule. you guys should be fucking ECSTATIC you get to hear EITHER of these guys.

barlow has to realize that he will NEVER be as good as tim.
DX231 3 years ago
what in the hell are you talking about, there is, and i repeat, is only one man right for Iced Earth and that is Matt, Tim is good, but no fuckin Barlow
HFfan85 3 years ago
He is such an amazing singer, but it is impossible to get his voice as high as Owens here. It isn't a bad thing, its just his limitation, and Owens can't go as low as Barlow. Its still good..
norhamdan1985 3 years ago
They have a similar range actually. Matts voice is deeper however
PennyDreadful1 3 years ago
They were both high baritones for example
PennyDreadful1 3 years ago
and plumbingbg u suck D@$k
SomethingWicked98 3 years ago
bastardoutofbodom i agree with u and barlow has way more range than owens, i also think barlow just puts his own personality into the song. i think it sounds better than tims live one, it sounds way more badass especially in the chorus, even though its not as high pitched like the original
SomethingWicked98 3 years ago
ripper did it better
