It doesn't help that Americans have had it hammered into their heads for almost 30 years that "government is evil! government is evil!" Y'know, some of the countries that have been doing best during this economic downturn are the Scandinavian countries, because they have full government social services to get their people through hard times: free health care, free education, etc. The government there, and potentially here, can work in the interests of the public. Stupid Americans.

wow, i didnt realize that americans have had it hammered into their heads for 30 years now that government is evil. in fact, i would have thought the opposite, if anything. there are many ways for governments to get their people through hard times or even to prevent hard times from happening in the first place - not just "free health care, free education, etc." Other options include not wasting so much on irresponsible invasions of other countries, not pressuring banks to make bad loans, etc.
