Thanks for posting this great 1960's classic by The Animals. The sheet music for the organ part on "The House of the Rising Sun" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
The production and direction on this video is unmatched anywhere. Take a lesson here on how to shoot a live number. The angles and views are spectacular.
@huskyjerk Yeah, I hadn't really thought about it until reading your comment. A few things that help: the lighting is interesting (good shadows!), they're not afraid of having the camera appear in the shot, and the director/switcher understands the structure of the song (knows where to focus and when).
@biglinguist Yes, it is an exceptionally well done video, unlike most since that era, which insists on showing unrelated items (like crowd movement) and improperly angled items (like showing only one backup vocalist while 3 guys are singing together).
personally, I think this is one of the best lyrics ever made, all the meaning it has, all the sadness the song express, it is an epic but underestimated song
For people who don't know music, they know the Animals mostly for this song. They were truly one of the great groups of the British Invasion. They played great blues type stuff, great musicians, and Eric Burdon truly had one of the great voices in rock.
They recorded this song in one take in the recording studio in 64--Yes-- they were that good---They kicked the Beatles to the curb--No one played a Vox continental like Alan Price---
The lip-synch DOES ruin it when you've just done what I've done, watch about ten different live versions back-to-back! The sound on the record is spectacularly good, they really nailed it that day in the studio, and Eric acts quite well but a song like this is meant to played live with emotion, even if slightly faked at least faked live and fluid. Explore the live versions through the decades, nobody, dead or alive, out-sings Eric Burdon. The best can manage an honourable draw.
Can anyone tell me the drummers name please, he went on to another group and named it after his own name?...........its driving me crazy that i can't remember it! HELLLLLLPP! :) x
One of the most amazing songs ever sung! For the longest time I thought the song was sung by someone from the American South (Alabama, Miss, etc.) and by some middle-aged guy. How these young British lads are able to sing in Deep South intonation is something I will never understand --- and always be amazed by!!!
I was only a year old when this aired but grew up listening to this band, thanks to my rockin parents. Eric's vocals are just over the top insanely cool and thank god this is what he wanted to do with his life---this made me a stronger person growing up listening to this stuff. Anytime my mental goes into overdrive with all of the BS I have to deal with sometimes everyday, all I have to do is crank up The Animals and life is good again and the BS disappears.

For an actual, non-mimed performance by the animals, go to youtube video v=wDlrRQ6Yzis

At this time they didn't have wireless electric guitars yet. Look at the lack of cords coming out of the guitars. This is *not* live. It's mimed.

@dunbar9finger yea, too bad. You can tell at 2:03 the hammond keyboard isn't even close to synchronous
