I think it was about 1974 first time I heard DJ William Edward Compton of Phoenix play Shawn's music. I went out and bought the Rumplestiltskin's Resolve album. Shawn is like an orchestra, a painting, a sculpture in the form of a musician. And DJ Compton was a walking enclopedia of music, who got the non-mainstream radio music going in Phoenix, and who died much too soon.
I have been listening to his music for 40 years and still love it. I was delighted to find it on YouTube after having lost my albums of his songs years ago
this is kind of like the musical equivalent of the uncanny valley... in theory all of its components should be sound but something goes so horribly wrong in the minute details of the execution that it makes one want to recoil in horror.
had a "DJ" turn me onto this wonderful voice in the '75/76 era.....NEVER have found a better voice to listen to, amazing, awe inspiring, How can people DOUBT there is a God?
I, along with many others, have listened to Shawn since his first album, and he remains the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Thank you Shawn for gracing Mother Earth and humanity with your angelic vibrations!
I was a big fan in the late 70s - early 80s and saw him live a couple of times. The last time in a small venue and I worked next door so they let me in before the show and I chatted with him while he was setting up. It was pretty cool.
i have a son that turned 22 last week. I raised him listening to this and Zep and Rush, etc. When he was about 12,
I found out Shawn lived not too far from Austin where we were staying. I and my 5 kids went and hung around with him for an evening. He is a great guy, really down to earth and now all of my kids are 2nd generation fans.
Now my son is a guitarist in a 'melodic death metal' band. .. wretchednc (????)
1971 I was first introduced to Shawn Phillips - and my life was changed. I'd just experienced a life-crushing trauma that was to torment me for the next 25 - 35 years. And somehow it was his music that helped me cope and grow. He helped in ways that I don't have words to describe - like music, there are really no words............................................
I have listened to Shawn since I was about 6, circa 1972 and saw him in concert several times as a child, which was a very rough time in my life... and Shawn & his music got me thru & helped me cope... and it still is! I feel empathy for those who do not know his music... and even worse for those who have heard it... but just don't get it! But that's okay... WE are the fortunate ones, and it makes me feel special to have his music in my heart & soul!
Shawn Phillips is truly amazing in his powerful deliverance of his music. His lyrical prowess is unbending and I had the opertunity to see him in concert on May 4th here in mpls, mn at the Guthrie theater, wow, he still has it after all these years. Get to see him again in July in St Cloud on the 30th. His DVD from the 2008 reunion concert held at the MN Zoo titled "Living Collaboration" is out, its a DVD of wonderment and awesomeness, go purchase it, you'll be very pleased indeed.........
I've loved him since the first time I heard him. I had the privledge of seeing him "Live" at 1st Ave in Mpls in 1978 - thanks Dawn J. He has a great range, and a wonderful voice. Will love him forever.
saw him perform at northern arizona university in 1976...he played a song on a double neck electric...was it a gibson?..called for j.h....is there a recorded version of it out there?..my first experience with seeing sound...
One of the few Nadi Yoga masters of the west (Transendental Music Meditation) with timeless harmony and a range that helps one leave the body if so inclined......
The song is L'Ballad and is on 2 of Shawn's albums - Contribution and Faces. This is the version from Contribution, but my personal favorite is the Faces version. Most of his albums are available on CD through him on his website, which you can find by googling. I was so happy when I found this some years back, so I could replace my old albums. An incredible singer and song writer...
I fell in love with Shawn's music in the 70's when I lived in Houston. Followed him all over. Greatest live performances! Lost all albums in a move several years ago. Could not replace them. Glad to see some here!
He is one of the few singers who can hit all eight octives, in my opinion.
I was first exposed to Shawn in the early 70's when he appearred in a late night rock music show...the name escapes me (anyone help me out here?) Was it Ron Kirschner something? To make a long story short, I later saw him in a small bar in Ft. Lauderdale in 1989 and he autographed my copy of Contribution: "To ___ Health, Love, Clarity. Shawn Phillips" Think about that..."clarity" Different dimension.1 of a kind.
I remember the first time I heard Shawn's voice. I was at a friend's house, early 70s, I was stoned, a friend put Second Contribution on, I put the headphones on, and fell in love. Still love him.
Antonio, Tx over 30 years ago. Heard he got hurt and would never sing again...so happy to have him back. He is an ageless talent. Ever so glad to have him back.
Shawn Phillips, has always been an inovator, in his unique way, of creating Music, that flows from within, and creates a special feeling of calmness, and peacefull rapture, that many still seek, to find.
I started listening to Shawn in 1970. He was doing evening performances in Chicago. Several years later in 1976 I was in the French Alps during a several month meditation retreat when I turned on the radio for the first time in months . On that foggy early alpine spring evening in a distant land I hear Shawn signing The Ballad of Casey Deiss. What a cherished gift the Ghadarvan celestial realms have given us with this musician and poet.
Was so pleased to find him again after so many yrs. My 15 yr. old son had the idea to look him up on You tube. I would never had thought of it. This is one of my favorite songs.
I got the fortune to meet him at an album signing in Wichita-I sketched a picture of him and gave it to him-to my total amazement the deeply serious long haired guru came in with short hair and a funny crazy personality-and I remember his performance of Julia that night-it was an elated feeling I got when he sang that song, he made me feel a connection. :o) God bless you Shawn!
a marvelous accompaniment (sp?) of one of my favorite "shawn" songs!
and YES!!! i remember "song for sagittarians" very well.... it's tough to say which one of shawn's songs is "my favorite" because i like almost all of them!
I remember seeing him at the tiny Cellar Door club (RIP) in Washington D.C. And he was funny, too! Didn't take himself too seriously...Imagine, all that talent AND a sense of humour too! What an absolute poet he is!

Shawn Phillips is said to have founded New Age music. a most unusual and fabulous composer. perhaps someone will include selections from his famous 'Collaberation'
album but NOT anything from his stinker album 'Bright White" maybe though something from 'Rumplestitskin's revenge'
