The real thing, from my point of view, would be exactly this but with an "re-root" or "auto-tune" feature as it is commonly called (I guess). Basically, no need to enter 4/3 notes chords for a single note : instead, when the (select?) button would be pressed, the base tone, that of the yellow button, is changed to whatever note was played last. It may be hard to remember on what scale you're playing and to figure out how to reach a certain other, but better than having to use chords for ntoes..
@powerhodges91 just a heads up man...don't type "0.o". Gay strippers use it as their signature...im sure it was accidental so i wanted to prevent you further harassment
Have you actually used this program to record guitar tracks?
Also is there a way to say, prearrange chords and assign them through your program? Cause I mean power chords are cool and all but I can see real potential here.
Hey, on your website it says Wii guitars aren't supported, I managed to use a chinese knock-off with Glovepie (not keystrokes, but joypad info) and a custom controller layout for MIDItar Hero. The whammy bar and all work perfectly. If you want the files I used to implement this on the next version of MH, drop me a message.
Awesome game the part at 0:24 really is rad I found it for online for free at one blow. com There are simply hundreds of PS3 games available there best thing about it is that they are all totally free too superb game
it looks like it would be kinda fun to play around with.... but to get an A in audio programming.... really? did u design the miditar hero software yourself?
If you use something like midiyoke, you can just assign any controller device to input a midi note of your choice.
i had a playstation 2 controller assigned to a drum kit (ez drummer) and 12 note piano (FL Keys)
If you didn't write this software then your basically not doing anything yourself at all.....
Umm... yes, I designed and programmed it myself using Max/MSP. What, you think I just took someone else's program and handed it in for credit?
Anyway, the program is much more versatile than using midiyoke or another similar method - it works on both Windows and OS X and with almost every GH and RB controller on 360/PS3/Wii. The interface is also easy to use, and in the normal guitar mode you can create custom scales of up to 32 notes.
@tehbackmaskr Dude, dont be like that. Do you make music? YOu should, youd realize something. Doing stuff like this is fun as hell. I hooked up like like two gamepads, made their buttons play notes and their controllers, like the sticks, send xy commands or whatever. It was basically a keyboard made out of gamepads, with real time parameter control. Made a dubstep wobble bass line with em just for the heck of it.
Not sure where this question is coming from, but if you're implying that I have no life and spend all my time playing Guitar Hero, you're sorely mistaken.
Been playing drums and percussion (concert snare, auxilliary, mallets, timpani, you name it) for 11 years, and played piano for 6... Just so you know. :-)
i think half of you planks are missing the point. the point is that the guy made this patch himself on max msp which i have total respect for.
also, the point was to be intuitive with music technology for programming and synthesis - tell me what part of playing the guitar is classified under programming and synthesis please...........
i'm waiting............ if you want to call people planks you should be prepared to be called a plank - you fucking plank!
I am trying to set this up for a mac with a rockband 360 controller but the computer does not recongnize the controller and the light turns off a second or two later any suggestions?
Which guitar is better for this personally? I find there's a LOT of lag (as you can see in the video that I posted.). Is the Rock Band controller easier to play as far as lag goes?
I'm a guitarist, so I'm use to fretting AS I'm playing, and playing the MIDItar is like playing Guitar Hero to me because I have to switch to the next chord, hold it down, THEN hit the flipper, which is really annoying.
I wouldn't say the RB controller helps with lag at all, but as you said the frets are a bit easier to handle. The main thing people dislike about the RB controller is the strum bar... most say it feels "mushy", especially on the older models. The newer ones strum better but they're wireless, so you'd need the 360 Wireless Adapter, and that actually increases the lag a tiny bit.
As far as the "fretting THEN playing" goes, that's the drawback of not playing to a pre-recorded track like you would be in Guitar Hero. Since the game knows ahead of time what you're supposed to play, I'm positive there's some leniency built-in in terms of fretting vs. strumming time. In MIDItar Hero, though, it needs to know what note you're trying to play before you strum... there's not really a workaround to that without introducing more latency.
Would the latency be a programming issue? Is there any way you can change the sensitivity of the frets on these kinds of controllers?
If you can show me how to change some of the settings through the program, or how you made it, I would love to take a crack at solving the latency and lag issue.
In your Dragonforce video, did you change the settings for the normal setup? I noticed you can switch out what notes are played with each button combination. Very cool.
There's actually only a few milliseconds of latency within MH, which is as good as it'll get. The rest of the latency is from the controller through USB... any game controller will have some amount of latency. Also, the whammy bar reacts slowly on the Xplorer controller for some reason, so that could be what you're noticing... it happens in the actual GH/RB games too.
In the TTFAF video, yeah, I just used two different custom scales in Normal Mode and switched between the two. It was fun :-)
GarageBand... MIDItar Hero works with any application that can play software synths through MIDI input, though... so you could use FL Studio, Reason, Live, Mixcraft, etc. as well.
Technically I have the intellectual copyright to the program, since I wrote it. Turning it into a commercial product is possibly an eventual goal but I have a good number of things to work out before it gets to that point.
Hey, another douchebag! For the billionth time... I've been playing percussion for 10 years and piano for 6. I'm a Sound Recording Technology major, and this was part of an audio programming project.
Besides the fact that nowhere did I say "OMG THIS IS A REAL GUITAR". Technically it's just a novel MIDI controller... not much different from a keyboard.
Also, if you want to learn guitar modes, go read up on modal theory first. You won't learn shit from copying what someone else does in a video.
There's documentation inside the program, and once you have everything installed go watch my other video titled "Using MIDItar Hero with a Digital Audio Workstation".
Also, you can use it with any Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii guitar or drum set for Guitar Hero or Rock Band... in fact, you could use any USB controller you have.
Hey everyone, I'm looking for some feedback in preparation for the next version of MH... if you have any suggestions or ideas about what'd you like to see in the program, leave a comment on the website.
hey i went to the link for miditar hero and the clicked download latest version and the download is private. can't be downloaded... so how do i get it?

dude, I need help, I need to press start to strum, and my thing is constantly on palm mute unless i lift the strum bar upwards :S (I'm using a mac with a ps3 LP) Thanks!
I'm pretty sure I don't have a PS3 LP/Mac setup done yet, because I haven't found anybody to help me out finding all the values and stuff. Send me a message if you want to help me get it working.
I'm actually a percussionist... been playing for 10 years now. I have a real guitar too, I just don't play it all that much.
There's obviously no substitute for a real instrument, but the fact is GH/RB are actually getting people interested in playing real guitar/bass/drums. Also, a recent Modern Drummer article talked about a drum teacher whose young student's rhythm significantly improved after playing Rock Band drums.
I'm a musician with SOME percussion training but no training on kit. RB helped my limb independence in a RIDICULOUS way. I went from barely being able to play stuff on Easy to being able to sightread stuff on Expert. I'm hardly the typical RB player, but it helped THIS musician to be able to legitimately play drums. That's why I'm looking at using my RB v2 kit to actually make music. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a real kit, and using MIDI, it's possible to use a VST drumkit for real.
If you haven't seen already, I implemented a "Drum Mode" in the latest version of MIDItar Hero... you can assign a MIDI note to each pad and the pedal.
I'll soon have the velocity sensitive feature of the RB2 pads implemented as well, so it'll basically be an inexpensive MIDI kit.
hey. i downloaded that msp thing andwas monkeying around with the media hero for awhile. umm i'm kinda confused on how to use and also how to use it with another program to get it working. i have windows vista and an xbox 360 guitar hero xplorer guitar. i spent a few hours on it and could not figure it out. could u help me?
Max/MSP isn't the sort of thing you're going to learn in an afternoon. Its an extremely complex programing environment and requires a substantial time investment and a great deal of patience to learn.
Read the thread listed in the video info... that should provide full instructions on how to get everything going. If you're using Windows, you need a virtual MIDI device to send MIDI from one program to another, which I'm guessing is probably what you're missing.
So you went to the cycling74 website, picked download, picked max5, picked current windows version, picked max 5.0.4 runtime, and downloaded it and installed it?
dude if you would have did this in my school i would have jumped up out of my seat and been like, $#%! yeah!!
it would have been even more awesome if you used the rock band drums in the drum machine program that andrew rudson made with this and had actually wrote a song.
The newest version of MIDItar Hero supports the Rock Band drum set... you can set each of the pads and pedal to a MIDI note of your choice and play drum sounds through a software synthesizer.
synthesizer, it plays through your computer speaker and you don't need a program like garageband for it too work and you can set any kind of midi sound to the drums and base pedal, it also has support for the use of 2 drum sets at once so you can set up all the tom tom and snare and cymbals sounds like on a real set, but yeah both of these programs are awesome
Well done. It's nice to see someone with real talent and skill playing something that has triggered such controversy. If anyone can make art from technology, it's a true artist.
I've been playing drums for ten years, piano for seven, and guitar for five... and the point of this isn't to actually "play" guitar as it is to use as a MIDI controller. I don't expect people to play this on stage, but to use when creating songs in GarageBand, Fruity Loops, etc. If you've seen the Music Studio in GH4, this could do all that but you could actually write real songs, rather than just in GH.
Besides, it started off as a school project, so the "point" was to pass my class.
well then is there any programs you know of that work on windows that allow you to use the controller to create music using joytomidi principles and btw amazing solo i know its not real guitar playing but its still cool
sorry a better question would be is there anyway to get guitar sounds on this with out using garageband or hooking up a guitar through a midi converter
No, because that's exactly how my program works. lol... it just converts the controller information into MIDI information, which should get sent to GarageBand or Fruity Loops or Mixcraft or a keyboard or drum machine or something else besides your built-in piano sound.
Ok, i have a question. Scorehero's being a bitch, and i can't log in.
I got Maple virtual midi. And I've set everything right. But every time i go in to any of my programs to set the midi in as maple port 1 it gives me an error saying "This port is already in use" Can you help me with this?
Honestly, binary wasn't my idea... I borrowed that idea from the Guitar Zeroes, but it's the only logical way to lay out the buttons to get the most possible combinations. In fact, MIDItar Hero and Fretbuzz (the program the Guitar Zeroes use) are both written in Max/MSP, which I didn't realize until recently. Fretbuzz is very cool... however, I'd like to think that MIDItar Hero is easier to set up and use, and the interface is more appealing.
hey man i got the same program im using a ps3 strat but i cant mash the start button and the fret to get the solo mode or power cords ect. ect . can you help me out bro?
Wow, Brian! You have outdone yourself. This is spectacular! Nothing will ever beat a real guitar, but this is pure genious. You need to market this, now!

I'll soon have the velocity sensitive feature of the RB2 pads implemented as well, so it'll basically be an inexpensive MIDI kit.

can you show me the midi u used im looking for an electric guitar like urs
lazershadow24 3 years ago
I just used a software guitar in GarageBand. You can use any program with MIDI-controlled software instruments, though.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
wat was the instrument called?
lazershadow24 3 years ago
No idea, I just used one of the distortion guitar sounds and changed some of the effects on it.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
And in fact, if you have a USB MIDI interface, you can hook up a synthesizer or drum machine and play sounds off of that.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
hey. i downloaded that msp thing andwas monkeying around with the media hero for awhile. umm i'm kinda confused on how to use and also how to use it with another program to get it working. i have windows vista and an xbox 360 guitar hero xplorer guitar. i spent a few hours on it and could not figure it out. could u help me?

Max/MSP isn't the sort of thing you're going to learn in an afternoon. Its an extremely complex programing environment and requires a substantial time investment and a great deal of patience to learn.
pants362 3 years ago
Oh wait this is just a patch for the runtime. Disregard X_X.
pants362 3 years ago
Read the thread listed in the video info... that should provide full instructions on how to get everything going. If you're using Windows, you need a virtual MIDI device to send MIDI from one program to another, which I'm guessing is probably what you're missing.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
What do i do after thenote pad how do i get to freestyle like you plz tell me.
slapshot3544 3 years ago
Wooow! Good job! And good demo!
joctee 3 years ago
yes. but when i click on the runtime 5.0.4 for windows it just downloads itself and opens up as a notepad.
monakedhoes 3 years ago
when ever i download midi her v.09 it opens up as a note pad document. why?
monakedhoes 3 years ago
Did you download the Max/MSP Runtime?
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
yea and that opens as a note pad too.
monakedhoes 3 years ago
You must be doing something wrong somewhere, because that's an application... it should be an executable file.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
ehhh. any ideas of what im doing wrong??? cause like theres multiple of apps. there so wich one do i pick. btw i have a windows based computer.
monakedhoes 3 years ago
So you went to the cycling74 website, picked download, picked max5, picked current windows version, picked max 5.0.4 runtime, and downloaded it and installed it?
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
hey i have a problem with mixcraft it works fine but theres like a lag so i hear the note like 1 second after i play it
hunterw44 3 years ago
dude if you would have did this in my school i would have jumped up out of my seat and been like, $#%! yeah!!
it would have been even more awesome if you used the rock band drums in the drum machine program that andrew rudson made with this and had actually wrote a song.
Stil scores a epic an a scale of 1 to 5
crazytracks 3 years ago
The newest version of MIDItar Hero supports the Rock Band drum set... you can set each of the pads and pedal to a MIDI note of your choice and play drum sounds through a software synthesizer.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
well, the drum machine program works without a
synthesizer, it plays through your computer speaker and you don't need a program like garageband for it too work and you can set any kind of midi sound to the drums and base pedal, it also has support for the use of 2 drum sets at once so you can set up all the tom tom and snare and cymbals sounds like on a real set, but yeah both of these programs are awesome
crazytracks 3 years ago
Well done. It's nice to see someone with real talent and skill playing something that has triggered such controversy. If anyone can make art from technology, it's a true artist.
scotsmanlerxt 3 years ago
this is so stupid. thers no point...play real guitar its alot easier than pressing a button to "change" the sound of ure rockband controler
afterlife525 3 years ago
I've been playing drums for ten years, piano for seven, and guitar for five... and the point of this isn't to actually "play" guitar as it is to use as a MIDI controller. I don't expect people to play this on stage, but to use when creating songs in GarageBand, Fruity Loops, etc. If you've seen the Music Studio in GH4, this could do all that but you could actually write real songs, rather than just in GH.
Besides, it started off as a school project, so the "point" was to pass my class.

Can u post a link to download this software?
SULLYEEE475 3 years ago
well then is there any programs you know of that work on windows that allow you to use the controller to create music using joytomidi principles and btw amazing solo i know its not real guitar playing but its still cool
djondaradio 3 years ago
mixcraft is good
hunterw44 3 years ago
sorry a better question would be is there anyway to get guitar sounds on this with out using garageband or hooking up a guitar through a midi converter
djondaradio 3 years ago
No, because that's exactly how my program works. lol... it just converts the controller information into MIDI information, which should get sent to GarageBand or Fruity Loops or Mixcraft or a keyboard or drum machine or something else besides your built-in piano sound.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
so you have to record the sounds yourself and then calibrate it through something like joytomidi
djondaradio 3 years ago
were did you get the midis for this and how do you change it to the guitar midis from piano
djondaradio 3 years ago
The "midis"? As in .midi files? Those have nothing to do with this.
As for making guitar sounds, that's up to you. You need a program that can play virtual instruments through MIDI input.
BrianSpud33 3 years ago
how do u get this?????
ozzacdcfreek 3 years ago
Ok, i have a question. Scorehero's being a bitch, and i can't log in.
I got Maple virtual midi. And I've set everything right. But every time i go in to any of my programs to set the midi in as maple port 1 it gives me an error saying "This port is already in use" Can you help me with this?
poopr1221 3 years ago
how did you make it sound like a friggen guitar and not a crapy piano

awesome idea with the binary for the notes
LWSamlan 3 years ago
Honestly, binary wasn't my idea... I borrowed that idea from the Guitar Zeroes, but it's the only logical way to lay out the buttons to get the most possible combinations. In fact, MIDItar Hero and Fretbuzz (the program the Guitar Zeroes use) are both written in Max/MSP, which I didn't realize until recently. Fretbuzz is very cool... however, I'd like to think that MIDItar Hero is easier to set up and use, and the interface is more appealing.

is this really a virus cuz i have a 360 x-plorer and this kinda looks fun?
