Hockey comes closest to football but hockey doesn't require the quick strength and methodical thinking of gridiron.

hockey is perfect 1 min shifts give it all u got then come off for 40-50 secs....plus there r fights in hockey so the fighters in the NHL do boxing workouts....plus hockey players got balls they dont cry when they have broken nails like football players do.....

@fktheworld1 Hockey and football are two different sports that require two different skillsets. Football's not like any other sport in the world, just like hockey.  If you're a hockey player, you need longer, compact and numerous muscle fibers to play the game vs the shorter, thicker, bulkier, less compact muscle fibers you need to play football. Most popular sports in the world save for gridiron require compact, numerous and longer muscle fibers.

@EelSacul hockey is the most hardest sport to play and its very different from every other sport....or u can also say combine all the sports and u get hockey really take these sports soccer, baseball, football, rugby, boxing cricket and put em togeather u get hockey....hockey players have skills of all these sports....thats why its an olympic sport i mean just being a good skater alone cud win u gold metals in the olympics....

@fktheworld1 Don't get me wrong, I love both sports. I like gridiron because there's no other sport which requires you to use both your brain and your bodies like gridiron and I like hockey because it's the hardest workout you can get from a team sport bar none with gridiron being a somewhat distant second. There's no way sprinting as fast as you can and running into people as hard as you can isn't hard on your body much like how skating as fast as you can is going to be hard on your body.

@EelSacul dude i know running hard at some body will hurt but that hardly happens in NFL they usually run our of bounds like pussys....in hockey they skate 35mph and then getting hit or crushed between the boards and then landing on ice..dam thats fuked now.....football they play on soft grass plus u really dont even need padding for football and also look at the helmets they wear 10 times bigger then hockey helmets yet there playing on grass LOLL bunch of sissys

@EelSacul go talk to anyone from europe they dont even know if a sport like gridron exists....they only know the real football(soccer)....when europeans see gridron they think its rugby in pads....only canada and US knows what gridron is.....football just can never get fans outside USA thats how it is and thats how it will always be.....theres r reason why its not in the olympics cuz its just way to soft...if a fat man cud play football who cant...

Oh, and the stops and starts are the players finishing their last chance at earning 4 more chances to earn either 4 more chances or score.

@fktheworld1 I play both football and hockey. Hockey works out your core and tires you out a lot quicker than football, but football requires quick bursts of energy since the plays are so short. If you were to cross the length of the ice to check somebody as hard as you can, most likely, you'd get an offsides penalty or you'd be away from the puck. Not so if you're trying to tackle somebody on the other side of the field, if you can catch up to them.

@fktheworld1 Hockey and football are both very difficult on the body for two different reasons. Football relies more on strategy, sprinting and power and hockey relies more on quick plays, strength and endurance. I love both sports. Around here, there's only really 3 seasons: Vikings Season, Twins Season and Wild Season. I'm not much of a baseball fan, so I follow the Wild during the NFL offseason, and so do many Minnesotans.
