Dimethyl sulfoxide (also known as DMSO) was first synthesized in 1866. The wood-byproduct that you speak of must first be oxidized to produce DMSO. It is approved by the FDA for interstitial cystitis. For this reason, it is hypothesized that MSM may have similar efficacy. Add a double bonded oxygen to DMSO and you get MSM.
