Once the RPMs get up, It's got that six cylinder carbureted european sports-car buzz and crackle! My wife's '62 falcon does that sometimes. It's got a 3 on the tree, and I love the sound of downshifting.
@THEREBELFORD u wont loose horsepower running true duals with now cats, as long as u run a muffler on both pipes. i have a 95 f150 with the same 300 6 efi motor and i have true duals going to 2 separate flowmaster super 40s with turn downs and it end right at the cab line, it gave me a lot more power and sounds close to a 302 motor
How much did high flow cats cost? Will they still pass inspection? I hav right now one regular cat with a glasspack and a turndown. It passed inspection here in Texas. If I get 2 high flow cats and true duals would i still pass inspection?
@aholco Is it pre-1996? If they have to run it on the dyno for an emission inspection and the numbers are within limits, it should pass. I worked as a state inspector when I lived in Denton. I never visually checked to see if catalytic converters were present. If it passed the dyno, that's all I cared. Just make sure your exhaust exits behind the cab.
This sounds kind of cool. From the sound you're running high flow cats and no mufflers? With just full straight pipes, no cats or muffs, these beasts sound like hot rodded tractors.
(sorry late comment) ,do u do regular city driving and not on the interstate much? cuz man i had a chevy blazer with the same 4.3 vortec and that bitch blew a head gasket and cracked the block at 142000 miles and it was pretty shitty....i didnt drive it hard ,rarely ever punched it ,but did alittle more interstate traveling then most people do though.
to me that sounds like a coolant issue.. sounds like you had a freeze up at some point, that alone can weaken the block and gaskets, leading to premature failure.
Cool buddy, thanks for your input. I didn't ask for it but it's very nice that you get on YouTube and let everyone know that you are a jackass. Show me some tangible evidence of your claim, then justify your value argument (in other words who gives a shit why you think there are 4 cylinders that sound better), and then perhaps if your intellect isn't too taxed by this point you can ask yourself why you felt the need to come into a battle of wit whilst unarmed.
just so all you non educated people know. A ford 300 ci. six has two exhaust manifolds. 3 cylinders each. They run into a two into one cat. I just cut mine off so i could run my TRUE duals. Educate yourself a little before commenting
it did on mine because my truck has 235000 miles on it and the cats were clogged to the point that my truck struggled with an empty trailer. Once removed it opened up and now runs fine.
@ford300runner My 74 Datsun is similar. I hav a 3 into one header. 1,3 & 5 go into one collector, 2,4 & 6 go into the other. then two pipes out the back with glasspacks about halfway down and Supertrapps at the tips. Very cool sound! Why do inline 6's sound different than V-6's? I have a Fiero with the same displacement as my 260Z (2.8L) but the just sound totally dfferent!
@jpatt1000 yeah i cant explain the sound. i ended up removing the duals and running a single straight pipe on the passenger. it was too damn loud with my window down(i had them turned out before the tires).i have a video of my current setup on my page
Corbed models had a 6 cylinder into 1 outlet manifold. The Electronically Fuel Injected 300's had two separate 3 into 1 outlet manifolds, so 2 oulets. It it very possible to run true duals with ANY 300 with the EFI manifolds.
That has been stated. There are a few different types, but the log manifold came stock on carb 300, seperate 3-1 manifolds came stock on EFI 300, and the HD carb 300's that where in dump trucks and UPS trucks had a hig flow log head rivaling the flow abilities of the EFI mani's.
@XxRUNTY for the mileage, better starting ability, and better power. my dad told me once the best thing he ever did to his '77 Corvette (and he swapped the motor, built up the new one, swapped the tranny, 4.11 gears, and so on and so forth) was put Holley Pro-jection on it.
If you knew anything about Fords, you would know the 300 I6 has two manifolds ( each manifold goes to 3 cylinders).... Ford doesn't build cheap Jap cars. Everyone knows two manifolds have flow equivalent to headers, way to show Ur age and prove the fact that if your 12 years old you should shut the fuck up.
I have a 1991 Ford F-150 with 300 and I am surpize how good power it has for i6 but like how much did the exhuast cost you and how is the maker of the exhaust?
To be honost, I sorta want a straigh 6 f-150 more than a v8, for a truck, the 300 is the perfect engine for the money and the milage. Tons of power, and you can find a running f series with a straight for 600 bucks or less.
its a 4.9l 6 you not going to get better millage than the 5.0 v8 the 6 has more low end torque so you might save in the city because you wont have to press it as hard. but when you hit the highway you going to get worse then the 302 because you wont have the horsepower to keep up with freeway speeds. but the 300 is unstoppable and perfect for going off roading
I'm at 260k. Just about to replace my shift forks, clutch and pressure plate, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and new AC compressor. It's a good truck.
Although the engine remained the same thru out its production ,it received the same updates as fords other engines 1975 electronic ignition , updated valves for unleaded fuel and was equipped with smog controls . the only factory carb was carter 1 barrel. IN 87-96 e f i and exhaust improvements led to vastly improved power out put. This is the toughest production engine ford ever built. Timing gears instead of chain . Early and heavy duty versions used steel gears .
240/300 same engine family 240 dropped in mid 70's , 300 continued thru 1996 . single barrel carb thru 1986 with single ehaust manifold. production 1965-1996. 1987-1996 multi-port electronic fuel injection ,with large aluminum upper intake bolted to lower inline intake. dual inline exhaust manifolds 3+ 3 , dual pipes to catalyst . large single pipe to second catalyst ,2.5 inch to single round muffler . single 2.5 tail pipe.
i would say this mines almost the same way. mines a 90. mine has 2 inch pipe no cats and magnaflow glass packs with 3 1/2 crome tips and its sounds bad ass. u should think about it. i just had the crome tips put on it. and it makes a big diffrence
i couldn't say for sure how it would be in an f100 because that is carbed, but my fuel injected 6 seriously gets 20 miles per gallon combined, can take off with no gas in 3rd gear, and came with a factory 10,000 pound hitch, they wouldn't put it on there if it was obsolete.
Great. Mine gets 19 miles to the gallon on the highway. And the power. I couldn't ask for more. Fucking great. I havn't towed a lot in it. But it was my dads and he said you couldn't tell if you were towing something unless you hit the brakes. Plus I can smoke the tires up threw 2nd gear.
is this just with 2 high flow cats? sounds exactly like mine when i had open manifolds. i guess thats what high flow cats pretty much are for... personally i would've deleted the cats and put dual flowmasters or something along that line. i bet it sounds mean in person and especially under a load. mine was unbearable
All mercedes and bmw inline sixes have 2 manifolds, many of them has a dual pipe with common mufflers going backwards. And some bmws have one pipe at each side.
1953, 1954, and 1955 6 cylinder engine have true duals. I work on them every day. There is one manifold, but it has two outlets. And before the haters and shit start bagging on me, there is no "x-pipe", or "crossovers". There are just two pipes from the manifold straight back through the bumpers. Look it up and it is possible. I am just defending the dude who posted the vid. Any true gearhead knows his shit.
I have an 84 chev with 250 i6, one manifold 2 exit pipes, that would be true duals on an inline 6, no xpipe, no cats. You could split the manifold but for the machine work involved not worth 1% power gain lol.
Hey, I've got a 98 Ranger with the same trans. I love the M5OD. Great shifting, and totally bulletproof! But I can't believe you guys shift at like 2 grand! Mines the 2.5L four, and I normally shift at around 2900-3000. I've never taken it past 4. But, isn't the 4.9 an OHV engine, cause mine is a SOHC engine, that might explain the revviness. I do like the 300 though. Rock solid. My dad had one in his F150, but it was a 3 on the tree.
Yes buddy I obviously slammed another inline six's exhaust since I hate them so much I would put a video of mine on youtube! Show me some proof before you go publicly making unjustified accusations. I don't go around talking other people's things down because I don't have particularly nice things either!
That's an extremely rare beast right there. 96 F150's in general were hard to find as Ford was retooling for the 97's that year, one with a 300 in it was even harder to find. Is yours a failmatic or is it a stickshift? My '85 is a stick, 4-speed overdrive behind the carb'd six.
Its the M5OD trans, 186000 miles and no problems so far, i have gotten 21 mpg average several times with it so its not geared too low, 3.31 in the rear.
Im not breaking 1500 at 55mph, i can shift at 1200 and itll drop to 800 and not have much trouble, anything below 800 is lugging but it will still pull through it usually.
The high mileage on mine makes it bog like hell below 1200. At double nicks, in fourth, mine turns 1200-1300RPM's.
I have to shift at 1900-2100 to avoid bogging it and getting crazy amounts of spark knock. It's showing it's age. That's odd because ittl still burn out just fine, I know the power's still there, but it just won't pull for shit in third and fourth gear.
sorry jesus but i dont the fuzz growing on a rats terd in a sewer about fords, as for that whole header thing id have 2 c it 2 beleive it, ne way my chevy could stole on by this truck like a pimp on pay day, further more even if u have 2 outlets were 2 pipes can hook up on "this particular year (1987-96)" u would still have 2 have them run into 1 central cat. defeating the TRUE DUAL purpose makeing them x pipes
You are a fool. I had the shop cut the entire exhaust off, weld the o2 sensor that was originally in the 2to1 cat into one of the pipes, after the 02 sensor i have two high flow walker cats, one on each pipe, then it exits at the side of the truck behind the rear wheels.
Next time you want to talk trash about someones vehicle do a little research, all 4.9 liter EFI engines have two exhaust manifolds, each with an o2 sensor in them, two downpipes leading to one 2to1 catalytic converter. The whole exhaust system cost the same as having one of the factory 2to1 cats put on. Get your shit straight.
Once the RPMs get up, It's got that six cylinder carbureted european sports-car buzz and crackle! My wife's '62 falcon does that sometimes. It's got a 3 on the tree, and I love the sound of downshifting.

sorry jesus but i dont the fuzz growing on a rats terd in a sewer about fords, as for that whole header thing id have 2 c it 2 beleive it, ne way my chevy could stole on by this truck like a pimp on pay day, further more even if u have 2 outlets were 2 pipes can hook up on "this particular year (1987-96)" u would still have 2 have them run into 1 central cat. defeating the TRUE DUAL purpose makeing them x pipes
