At the concert in Memmingen i got to speak with him and he really walked behind the stage, picked up his guitar and showed me something! THIS WAS SO FUCKING AMAZING, THANK YOU, MR. LAGE!
agree with you guys - those licks aren't stale with some soul behind them, just listen to Django or Howard Alden for starters. It's true also that at the end there he was really going into some interesting stuff but it abruptly ended. Badass Bb minor chord there though at the end, wtf was that? Obviously this guy's brilliant, but does anyone else prefer Gilad Hekselman?
@Nicckytwotimes I don't think it's stale so much as Julian is just a really evolved modern guitar player who is trying to look at things differently. That lick is a standard for a lot of bebop players, which is why he was trying to get away from it. Don't get me wrong, I love Bird or Joe Pass as much as I love Julian. Just different schools of thought.
Julian you are a gifted and obviously thoughtful and intelligent player and artist BUT that "lick" is stale because of the way you phrased it not just because of the content. The new guys don't swing. I don't get why. It's like its intentionally avoided.
FINALLY you get to see a pro talk about playing and music and theory and method at the same time. There are millions of "lessons" on youtube where some shredder play "jazzy cromatic licks" over Band in a Box backing tracks, without a clue about whats happening. This is probably together with Assafkehati the best lessons about II-V-I Ive seen. Thank you Julian for sharing, this was awesome!
I love to hear jazz guitar on an acoustic guitar !!!

@RyanOFelt Quite a good point you're making I think. It does seem his aim is exploring and creating these new approaches. Cheers
