They used to do this exact solo when he was behind the kit and Peter Gabriel was the REAL frontman of genesis of course it's perfect they haven't changed a thing since the 70s
all the people who keep on dissing Phil for not playing and Chester because he is not famous should look. Phil is singing songs while Chester has to play the drum parts. That in itself is a feat because you have to be a pro to do that
I am trying to find a Phil Collins - drum solo on a live event early 90er - it was within another song - and so brillantly done, that I am still searching for it. (I heard it on the radio in those days and could not record it)
Can anybody help? I have checked nearly videos here ... can't find it.
Maybe you've heard a live version of the song 'Fading Lights' from the Genesis Live Tour 1992? It's not quite a drum SOLO, but Phil does an excellent drum performance with Tony and Mike (starts at 03:50):
@Moliere999 Hi there, Moliere999 - thanks a lot for your efforts!!!
Meanwhile I have checked them all .... not sure which one it was. But thanks a lot anyway. Today I would say, this one - "Drum Duet" - the awesome one "is IT" - simply great!
I think that there some kind of youtube robot who dislike some video just to put some kind of balance...because seriously...how can you possibly dislike this?
There are two albums for this tour: One for the "Shorts" and one for the "Longs". Have a look at the "Longs" album; there you can find this drum duet as a song :).
hey guys enjoy my cover! "Behind the lines/Duchess cover by pino lettieri" or " Duke's travels cover by pino lettieri" or "Fading lights cover by pino lettieri" ENJOY
@xSpyMenx141 you have no idea what you are talking about..chester was just a session drummer, paid by the hour..not a part of genesis..phil collins, good drummer but just average..charlie chuck(google him) could drum him into the ground as it were..
A real dummer..Ginger baker..but then you are just a kid,so what would you know?
Because you get more of the attack and less resonance so you can here the articulations better. They're called concert toms. Thompson used to use them too when he played with Zappa. When you go around the kit playing fast notes you here each drum distincly and it doesn't resonate into the next note. Less overtone basicaly.
chewing gum? is that what you are paying attention to? If you go to Hawaii, you are going to miss all the beauty of the place because "it is too hot".
"Eyes closed"..."chewing gum"? John Petrucci plays with his eyes open... B.B. King plays with his eyes closed. Does that make B.B. King the better guitar player? Does Petrucci maybe need a chewing gum to be as good... or does he have to stop looking concentrated? How you look is a matter of preference, not a skill measurement.
I guess I have to look more relaxed next time... and buy some chewing gum.
@TheKeating77 I absolutely love Neil Peart but he's great at playing the music of Rush were Chester Thompson resume includes stints in Weather Report and Frank Zappa which is complicated enough. Phil Collins can play rock fusion of Brand X, blues rock of Eric Clapton and even subbed in for Black Sabbath. I'm not saying that Neil is one dimensional but I only know his playing from Rush and Buddy Rich projects nothing really diverse.
@mynameisLeevilbitch Some of the old Genesis stuff (like Peter Gabriel old) is very Zappa-esque. Phil was a pretty bad-ass drummer until he went to the dark side of bubble gum pop Disney songs. He had the ability to lay down a pretty fat groove, especially for a progressive rock dude. I'm not diminishing Chet, but Phil was no slouch back in the day.
@golferal These people who were flipping Chester off needed a taste of their own bullshit! Got respect for Genesis (in places) but I personally think Collins' finesty hour was his collaboration with The Ultimate Warrior on the US video for "two hearts"....
If ur a drummer u gotta know ur set left to right, up to down and any other direction, same way u can play guitar and hit whatever fret u need without looking
Would you believe that many people, back when Phil was the hottest thing going, didn't know he played drums? And Chester is awesome as well. they "Wrote" this thing on 2 hotel chairs........
@TheReddvd Stick you XD where the sun don't shine. It doesn't matter at all if Phil is chewing gum. You get up on stage and do what he did. Can't do it? Go buy a pack of gum and at least chew.
Yeah I get so pissed when people dismiss Phil. The guy was an amazing drummer. His stuff with Brand X, all the albums he played on for other musicians. There was a reason others solicited his talents he is that freakin' good. He is one of those guys where there is no mistaking who it is you are listening to, you know it's Phil in about 2 seconds flat.
@guyfidelity I totally agree man!! I just got back from a holiday, lot of driving, so we had a lot of cd's, including calling all stations. It's a good album but you can really feel phil is not on the drums. His playing is really really filled with uniqueness
You can tell Phil is a master at playing drums. Just like Eric Clapton on the guitar... They just make it seem so "effort-less". If I could play drums like that, or a guitar like "slo-hand", I wouldn't worry where my next paycheck would come from... and that's the gospel.
@jrcr1 ...oh please! I agree with you 110%! Beiber is just a MASS PRODUCED MUSICIAN... Like most of your "contestants" that go on American Idol... They NEVER know the REAL story about being a musician except when it comes to a "contest". Please, gimme a break! Makes me feel bad of what all the REAL musicians had to go through... KIDS have it soooooooo easy today. :(
