Strange that every German knows this as it is a New Year ritual on TV in Germany every New Year, but it utterly unknown in England. I thought I would see what it's all about after reading that in the German parliament, when an awkward question is being discussed, it is customary for a member to stand up and defuse the situation by quoting from this show: "I'll do my best." This has quite a stunning effect: all the other members fall about laughing - yes, even Germans.
i used to luv freddie frinton a great comic actor of his time doing slapstic comedy - as someone comics these days should see freddie at his best and lean without much talking but still funny and NO SWEARING a joy to watch and they say germans dont understand english comedy - well done to all germans and other countries for watching good old fashioned comedy at its best - two good actors -- where have they all gone ?
No German, for some reason, would miss this sketch on New Years Eve. The Country grinds to halt about 10pm while they watch it. To hear them sing Auld Lang Syne makes one weep and long for home.
Just watched this on ZDF in germany Its on at least 15 times throughout new years eve and although its a classic after over 20 years here I`ve seen it enough I think
It's actually quite sad. She's the last survior of her group of friends and the butler has to make them all up... My Granddad is 90 in two weeks and none of his friends are alive anymore.
First time I saw this was last New Year's Eve in the Czech Republic. Weird. Never seen it in the UK. I see from other comments that it's shown in other countries around Christmas/New Year too.
I like much more the Dutch caracter Tom Manders, who did a double role in the following little video about a tramp, who shows his new invention to a "Institute of Patents", a Mouse Trap, look for : dorus de muizenval
Haven't seen this since i was a kid.
Thanks for sharing.

Its great innocent physical comedy... Probably even funnier if you were there when it was being performed.

Brilliant, true humour. Modern comedians should learn how to make people laugh like they used to.

It's rubbish. Sums the Germans up if you ask me, and I actually like slapstick, but this is mediocre.
