  • Thanks for that lesson Carol! Wow what I would give to have half of her knowledge on the Bass.

  • Carol is a class act, and her advice to me in several short e-mails improved my playing and sound more than 30 years of lessons and study. Her available lessons are w/o peer IMO.

  • Play with a pick...don't play with a pick..who cares? When you've played on as many records as she has you can make your video and not play with a pick. By the way..I wrote her a fan letter once and she not only wrote me back but told me a ton of cool stories about people she worked with. VERY nice.

  • good bassist but pick? :o

  • @BitchFunkband Everything is good if it sounds good, so don't think the pick is bad in this case.

  • @BitchFunkband It's a bass GUITAR. Using a pick is perfectly acceptable. Fingerstyle, pickstyle, slap, whatever. They're all just tools to use. Any technique that is acceptable for guitar is acceptable for bass. If it sounds good, it is good. Carol sounds good.

  • I cant find the rest of this video anywhere on BP. Please up load the rest. Thank you

  • You cant go wrong with Carol's advice. Most who pick on her do not know what they are talking about. She is very friendly and is agreat person to caht with.I have learned alot from her

  • The biggest fact that I got from this is that people need to shut up and play music.

  • She is a genius!

  • Now 4 people need an edukayetion seriously??

  • What your saying sounds very reasonable and I hope the claims against her are not true. I read this some time ago but here's the link with claims. bassland.net/jamerson.html Some of the claims are pretty big.

  • @markdlowe As in the case of this version /watch?v=lrbrytKn08k there are different bass parts, one sounding like a pick and one with plucking, or 'the claw'. I once talked with Bobby Watson who played bass on Rock With You, he played his part but never met Jackson in person. So I think it's the same kind of thing. Kaye demoed or worked with some songs and may have contributed edited parts to a recording, but always played with a pick, if it has the claw, it has to be Jamerson with the main part.

  • She may be a great bass player but its alleged she also claims she's responsible for may of James Jamersons works on Motown recordings. Despicable if true.

  • @markdlowe It's now pretty common knowledge for anyone who does their research, that about 1/3 of all Motown recordings done in the 1960s were cut in L.A. There is no logistical way that volume of recordings for the label could have been recorded in one basement recording facility in Detroit. Carol Kaye has official documentation of what she has played on. She has played on so many recordings, she has no reason to lie. People like Stevie Wonder have come forward to vouch for her. She's good ppl.

  • 0:57 She just wacked the shit out of it.

  • Interviewer is clearly a know it all, mmhmm, as if he just knows everything......

  • i wish she was my granmother. Man! that would be so awesome!

  • Carl Kaye is simply one of the best bess players, PERIOD. The fact that she is a lady is a sidenote.

  • This woman is not only a charming person to hear..she is a GIANT OF A MUSICIAN AND BASSIST...who could ever discount her in any way...ANY WAY!!!!!!!!! Her accomplishments would run off the page...I like that bass she is using...It is an Ibanez SRX 700 and I have one just like it...now to play as well????? But really Carol, YOU are a true Legend...and a lovely person...May you live to be a 100 years to spread your good will and musical knowledge. ...

  • What an inspiration!

  • I'm tired of hearing about jaco pastorius

  • Oh, my! I LOVE her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have worked with Carol many times over many years; she is simply the greatest and is real funny also.

  • Note to the interviewer: Shut up, your Mmmhmmm uh huh yeah do not help at all.

  • she looks like she has a huge pinch in, lol

  • James Jamerson is untouchable...

  • I've heard of Carol Kaye, but I have never seen or heard her perform.

  • This is pure gold.

  • God Carol is so badass. BTW all the latest research in Music Learning Theory supports exactly what she is saying here - what she and apparently everybody knew already in the 1950's.

  • yep, a wealth of info here, kids.

  • she knows a lot about music - and played on "Good Vibrations," so that is cool...

  • I wish I could play the drums with her! Carol you jam!

  • Carol,

YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO ANYONE WHO LOVES MUSIC! I love music, and I love you too! A young fan.

  • so screw you jazz. fackhjng rack and hole.Down with scales then.

  • 3 people need an edukayetion

  • @coolsweetgroovy EDUCATION ? They need more than that! Most woman her age(or even younger)cant play cards because of arthritus meanwhile she's flying around the fretboard on a BASS! not a guitar neck but a bass neck. She not only fit in a "mans world"she paved her own path in it,she was doing things that 99% of the male players COULD'NT play, the best part of it she did it when the competition was Jamerson,Jaco,Duck Dunn,Rainey,Clark etc...she stood out in a crown of those players WOW!

  • @cottonfever1221 I agree

  • @coolsweetgroovy I just got me sum...

  • @stoob1969 LOL you go

  • Ciao!

  • probably one of the only bass players out there who could call Jaco "John"

  • @wrchernoff Yeah. Love how she called him John, like he's a newphew. :)

  • Chromatic-ing!!

  • Great info and insight!

  • Carol is so onto it. She has a great capacity to see the fabric of the music and what a bass player is supposed to be within the various fabrics of Jazz.

The only thing left out in the comment about Jaco is he also found a different way of grooving by rhythmically breaking the time up and melodically implying harmonic insinuations not just as a soloist but as a sideman.

Anyone with ears and harmony knowledge finds what she is saying irrefutable.

  • Carol Kaye is the queen of cool plus she can sing too plus has got an infectious smile

  • wrecking crew bitch!

  • @prisonbreakfilms: she means Monk Montgomery. His brother is Wes, the guitarplayer... they have a band together called 'the montgomery brothers'.Cool stuff!

  • 3 people from the James Jamerson fan club yet again

  • @coolsweetgroovy Not necessarily. Alot of people who love JJ love Carol too.

  • @roscoegino It doesn't seem like it

  • @roscoegino Really? doesn't really seem like it

  • does anyone know who the bassist she mentions at 0:39 is? mcctunrey or something like that?

  • SHE TALKS WITH GROOOOOVE LOL

  • she's a real musician! she's got sound in her hands and a lot of things to say and teach. Music needs real musicians, not useless virtuosos

  • I wish people would not pick on Carol. Her knowledge and ability speaks for itself.

She is simply one of the best players, period! Sure, bass has traditionally been in the "man's world", but I'll make room for Carol anytime.

By the way, her instruction methods did more for me than years at a music conservatory. If she lived anywhere near me, I'd beg her for lessons.

  • @55mrj I agree 55mrj. I mean come on, she played the bass on the Barnaby Jones theme song, among many television theme songs. She's awesome. I never knew she played with a pick. Maybe that's because she was originally trained as a guitarist. I'm going to buy her improv book. I have Ray Brown's for double bass (gr8 book too), but I want something that has more of a study on improv.

  • Comment removed

  • @55mrj I can't believe this comment got 18 thumbs up *shrug*. Don't you think she'd prefer you'd ASKED her for lessons rather than beg? That's almost implying that she's a narcissist. It seems to me she's pretty much a down to earth person that enjoys what she does. "bass has traditionally been in the "man's world", but I'll make room for Carol anytime." Guess what, someone did that in a meaningful way back the 50s, that's why we know of her today.

  • My brain just slapped my face.

  • she got some strong fingers!! what a wonderful player and recording legend!

  • She is the Mother of bass.

  • hey anybody know where the rest of this interview is, I couldnt find it ??

    Cheers

  • ... BTW has anyone seen the Wrecking Crew movie? How much of Carol is in it... & do they feature Larry Knechtel & Tommy Tedesco (both R.I..P.) as well?

  • @greyhall1 I agree w/ that... as I don't deny the fact EVH has a tremendous ego & wants VH to be Van Halen + whichever singer is on Ed's "good side" @ the moment...

  • Carol Kaye is also one hell of a jazz guitarist. Not too many people know that. In fact she started out originally as a jazz guitarist. She's awesome, and just may be the most recorded bassist in history.

  • how much bass does Carol Kaye play...? look at the paint job on her bass... then look at the worn frets in first position... 4:39

    it never ends...

  • a lot of first position work in the keys of F and Bb... "the money notes..."

watch her plectrum work... it's magical...

  • Carol IS MS. BOOGALOO of all time..soooo THE BEST!!!...Got all her materials from Dick Henderson....:)

  • Luv Carol Kaye- she played on nearly all of my favorite (U.S.) Top-40 hit songs from the mid/late 60s to the early 70s. Talented woman. That said, all the bickering re: Kaye vs Jamerson proves most bassists are egotistical, frustrated guitarists whose sense of self-importance is directly inverse to their musical abilities- haven't known a bassist personally who wasn't mediocre, insecure & wouldn't STFU about how much of a great "musician" they thought they were. No wonder EVH gave Mike the boot.

  • @BillDerBerg Mike Anthony is a mediocre bass-player on a good day but was the best bass-player for that band. He could never play with the likes of Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder. THAT being said I would still never go see them with EVH's son as he is even worse ! At least Michael Anthony got the job done and did have great backround vocals which is something I could never do.

  • @phase901 Mike was the best background vocalist for VH bar none. I wouldn't see VH w/o Mike either but it's sort of inside knowledge that Mike didn't play bass on a lot of Van Hagar-era tracks- it was Ed. I guess either Ed's ego or Mike's inability to play what Ed wanted him to for years, led Ed to let Mike go. As for Wolfie's bass playing- I've only watched what's here on YoutTube but ya there's not much difference btwn them except Wolf has no vocals & doesn't play the songs the way Mike did.

  • @BillDerBerg EVH just wants his son to have the gig.

  • @phase901 How do you know he couldn't play with Steely Dan? Do you know Mike Anthony personally? Have you jammed with him? How do you know he's "mediocre?'

  • @greyhall1 Of course I don't know him but please use the internet and show me a Youtube or any link where

he's playing anything the least bit challenging - I don't think playing Rock - even some of the more complicated VH tunes takes alot of talent - to back this statement up look no further than EVH's son - he's playing arenaa with the band already and he's been playing how long 2 or 3 years !?!?!? I know it's alittle longer than that I'm just kidding but Send the links !!!

  • @phase901 Just because he's spent his VH career pumping out 8th notes doesn't mean that's all he can do. Pumping those 8th notes made him a multi-millionaire! I'd do it too! Both EVH & especially DLR wanted very simple basslines that didn't stand out in the mix. I saw VH in 1986 and Anthony played a very fast solo with lots of arpeggios & chords in it. He has the chops. The band wouldn't have been OK with busier basslines.

  • the interviewer need to shut the fuck up.

  • SHE plays!!!

  • It is players like her that make me somedays look at my basses and say "what is the point of me playing?" She is amazing, I would love to have had her career and abilities.

  • Just to fill in some info on Carol Kaye: Studio session bass ace on the US West Coast on over 10'000 records! She's been on all kinds of famous pop records such as Brian Wilson's/Beach Boys' legendary Pet Sounds or many of Phil Spector's produced pop recordings. She is the bass equivalent to Barney Kessel (also on Pet Sounds eg.!) or Tommy Tedesco: Jazz aces on guitar who were studio aces for inumerous pop artists. (By the way, another very early electric bass player in Jazz was Steve Swallow).

  • you guys always got to rate people, don't you...? who's the best...? well, who's the best is often a matter of popularity, flavour of the month and how well you relate to that person... there have been so many great bassists in music history that one can only list them rather than rank them... listen to each one and enjoy their immense contribution to the bottom line...

  • Monk Montgomery was a pioneer, but so was Carol Kaye - and she is a musical instructor par excellence - scales, triads, arps, patterns, changes, rhythm figures. most players today know about bass guitar from her work - directly or indirectly. use her website discography to look up these tunes on YouTube.

  • Carol Kaye's hit bass lines have never been equaled except by James Jamerson and Paul McCartney - but she is more prodigious. and how much did Sir Paul learn from her? there have been many solo bassists, but not as musically solid as her...

  • Carol's smile and personality is so infectious

  • Ok who are the 2 Jamerson Pushers giving this a thumbs down? confess now

  • What a cool lady.

  • thanks carol for those wonderful books you published, my bass playing has

totally improved over the years, reading, soloing, and time-keeping, i dig ya lady!

  • carol can really play a bass guitar out of

    respect she's my hero

  • Yep I'd like to spend the next fifty years learning to play bass with her.

  • thief. i hope she burns in hell. great bass player, but to take away a better players legacy, who's dead, i mean to take credit away from him is evil. 100% of the people who know who played on these tracks agree it WASNT her, so why does she persist? fuck her

  • @chu1111111

I never heard anything about her not playing on the records she claimed to play on. Where'd you hear that? I think you're making up to be honest.

  • @blueblob4 = she claimed to have played on the majority of motown track, but she didnt it was james jamerson, whos now deceased. its a long story just google it. again, great bass player, but she is mentally disturbed and a thief without much honour

  • This is only about half of the original interview that originally was on Bass Player TV dot com, which no longer exists. Anyone know where to find the complete interview? The link shown here doesn't have it.

  • not true blueman, jaco was around at least in 74 cos he played on little beavers record on a track - i can dig it baby. he did stuff before that too but thats the earliest I have. its a great track

  • Carol's smile is so infectious

  • only one Jamerson fan or one of his people or both had the guts to give this a thumbs down

  • 1 dislike I know where it came from a Jamerson fan or one of his people or both

  • This is a very tough woman who played with the Wrecking Crew (men). I'll bet you didn't mess with her in those days !!

  • @gaspo218 She even has told Phil Spector to F off too

  • This is AWESOME! Only true musicians will no who Carol Kaye is, unfortunately. :(

At least she is highly respected within our community.

  • Anyone notice she's very simiar to Carnie Wilson? the infectious smile, the sassy attitude, funky fashion sense, and the overall coolness

  • STANLEY CLARK BROKE OUT WITH THAT SHIT FIRST SHE GOT THAT BACKWARDS WHEN STANLEY CLARK DEBUT WITH RETURN TO FOREVER IN 1972 WE DID NOT HEAR FROM JACO UNTILL 1976 WITH HIS DEBUT ALBUM JACO PASTORIOUS. EVEN TOUGH SHES WAS GOOD SESSION PLAYER AND A BETTER TEACHER SHE DID NOT RECORD THOSE FAMOUS MOTOWN BASS LINES THAT SHE CLAIMS. JAMES JAMERSON ,WILTON FIELDER,& BOB BABBITT DID THAT. I WILL SAY SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE TALKING ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO MUSIC THIS OLD BIRD CAN REALLY PLAY

  • She is my Idol. I love Carol Kaye!

  • Dammit, now I got to start over.

  • the best teacher

  • she played "pet sounds" of the beach boys album

  • Carol Supa Funky Coo. Funky Machoman Likey, Likey Lotski poo

  • Does anyone know if carol Kaye and Mary Kaye are in any way related?

  • Sight-readin pro Carol was/is also a mean ole 6-string picker, played on unknown cuts n gig east and west coast including Hollywood soundstages since the early '50s. And a real looker in her time !

  • i wish she was my granny.

  • @boot180 Granny? I'd make her my wife strictly to hear her play every day...Can you imagine walking down the stairs at breakfast listening to that "bah dododo..bah baduppe bah bah bah dueeeeee chords"...while you have say hot buttered waffles waiting for you...

  • w/ Vermont maple syrup on the waffles btw...

  • My mind has been blown, been a bass player for 7 years, she just made me feel like a beginner all over again. Hey God, please send some more Carol Kaye's.

  • that one lick she keeps playing is part of the donna lee melody

  • the most amazing thing about this clip is how she makes that ibanez actually sound just like an upright. unreal.

  • love the way she talks...

  • practice chords right on!

  • THIS CHICK IS HIP AS FUCK! Not to mention, she can play the shit out of the bass.

  • @ScottMasson Stupid shit

  • @ScottMasson chick? she's older than your fucking mother show some respect jerk !!

  • @3M00RI Damn! You're right! haha. Sorry about that. Where I'm from, "chick" kinda means "badass" in a musical context. I forget that word can come across derogatory. Not my intention.

  • @hoglundmatt - please check and see if your kindergarten teacher has a Kleenex for your nose.

  • You should read Mitch Mitchel's book on his years as drummer for Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix and Mitchel once jammed with Carol Kaye. Mitchel describes the experience of playing with Ms Kaye as "frightening". Yes, she was/is THAT good!

  • I took bass lessons from her when I lived in Santa Clarita. Great teacher.

  • Why is she not in The Rock N Roll Hall of fame?

  • @MilesOfBass I don't think so

  • Wow. That was a sweet bassline. Way to give us pickers some backup.

  • someone has to be the mother of all you losers... meet mom.. now go to your room and practice

  • CAROL KAYE TALKS ABOUT JACO PASTORIOUS & -

  • Most underated muscian in Rock N roll

  • is she wearing a matrix shirt?

  • @arsnel366 lmao!

  • Carol Kaye is the BEST in Bass Guitar teachings! =o]

  • Thank God for Carol Kaye...the ultimate Electric Bass Player. She has a great website. Who hasnt' she played for and with? She answers any and all questions...and usually in minutes. Carol Kaye doesn't just play the electric bass, she IS the electric bass! A great player...and a kind, considerate teacher and person. Thanks for the music.

  • God, I would love to be like this woman. Her playing is melodic.

  • Why on earth am I just finding about her???

  • Not sure what you people are talking about. I didn't see anywhere in this video where Carol Kaye claimed to have played on "I Was Made to Love Her" or any other Motown hit.

Carol Kaye has played on more hit records than anyone who's posting bashes against her. Heck, she's played on more hit records than any of us! Amazing...period.

  • She's a hell of a fine jazz guitarist too. That's how she started. Carol was on HUNDREDS of pop and rock hits. Beach Boys, Righteous Bros, etc, etc. Mommas and Papas. One of the most recorded bassists ever.

  • proves that bass players can use picks.

  • A true living legend...period.

  • 1st laydeee of bass... dontchoo eva forgit it

  • She is soooo right,it´s all about the rhythm arpeggios and passing notes!

scales comes from chord notes and not the other way around IMHO anyway.

  • Carol. your a wonderful melodic player, and you are inspiration,

    keep going babe.

  • i would....lol...

  • She's great!!

  • Carol Kaye lost my respect when she tried to lay claim to a lot of Jamerson's work. It's one thing to give her her due for what she actually did, that's great, yea Carol. But... when she tried to lay cliam to music that was later proved to be Jamerson's, both by studio logs and the memory of members of the Funk Brothers... well, that's just unacceptable... PERIOD!!!

  • @dcburgess58 You're just pissed she isn't black.

  • @yaknbo Huh? What the heck kind of statement is that? For starters, I'm white, on top of that my preferred genre is rock, not soul. I'm not pissed at anything or anyone. Let me say it one more time for your benefit. - Carol Kaye lost my respect when she tried to lay claim to a lot of Jamerson's work -. There, got it now? "lost my respect". What she did is the same as someone at your workplace telling other people that he did work that you had done. It isn't what an honest, honorable person does.

  • @yaknbo Thank you Sir

  • @yaknbo You Go

  • Most recorded bassist ever.

  • cool! I just discovered her today. yet I've heard a lot about male bassists like jamerson.

  • Young bassists, if you call yerself a bassist... shut up, listen... and learn something from Carol Kaye...

  • Thanks, Ms. Kaye for your awesome playing.
