One of Lord Attenborough's very best roles and generally overlooked by most people, if they know about it at all! A splendid representation of a type of RSM the army isn't allowed to have anymore - now it's "don't shout or speak to squaddies too harshly for fear of offending them" As any British - trained officer would know, officers absolutely did not enter a Mess wearing their cap ( mind you, try explaining that to many so-called 1940s 're-enactors').
Marvellous! Senior NCOs like RSM Lauderdale have always been the backbone of the British Army. They could be complete bastards, but woe betide anyone who threatened or criticized their men.
RSM Lauderdale: I have seen Calcutta. I have eaten camel dung. My knees are brown, my navel is central, my conscience is clear, and my will is with my solicitors, Short and Curly.
One of the most underrated movies of all time, and so little known. Attenborough's sang-froid is beautiful to behold.

@cosycleaner It's a totally crap, studio-bound movie with Attenborough overacting like never before.

@EddieTheFishReturns I wish Richard Attenborough had died of lung cancer years ago. I will celebrate his death.

Fuckin' classic. "Please remove your headdress."

There is a great scene where he rounds on a soldier for not saluting properly.
Attenborough was in the RAF during the war mainly in their film unit.
