I have a small 98 Sonoma (manual) and my truck makes this sound when I downshift and stay off the gas and clutch. So I just thought that's what the big truck drivers did, too; I didn't know it was a whole system! Lol

Its a engine brake, its non friction based, what happens is when you need to slow down but keep momentum or dont want to use to brakes, you use an engine brake.

Depends on the truck and what part of the world you are from. In Canada/USA they still use drum brakes because disc brakes are very expensive, four times as much to replace. They have had disc brakes introduced in the 1970's but were too expensive to buy/fix. In Europe disc brakes are on almost every truck except vocational trucks that use planetary axles which still use drum brakes. Dump trucks there are also all drum brakes.
A Jake Brake works by altering the operation of exhaust valves and the function of the pistons as they cycle up and down. The compressed air is then released by opening the exhaust valves as the compression reaches its highest point. This creates an explosive effect, which creates a draw on the engines power, slowing it down.
Do you really wanna sit there resting your foot on the brake the whole way down a damn hill? Didn't think so, its simpler to have it on a dash switch or on the wiper/flasher stalk plus wired to the brake and clutch pedal than on a push switch rigged only to the brake. That just seems dumb.

if a truck only uses its brakes to slow down you would have to change the pads every day jakes help but dont cut it thats why they slow down early enough so then to use the brakes and not wear them too much

Depends on the truck and what part of the world you are from. In Canada/USA they still use drum brakes because disc brakes are very expensive, four times as much to replace. They have had disc brakes introduced in the 1970's but were too expensive to buy/fix. In Europe disc brakes are on almost every truck except vocational trucks that use planetary axles which still use drum brakes. Dump trucks there are also all drum brakes.

The compressed air is then released by opening the exhaust valves as the compression reaches its highest point. This creates an explosive effect, which creates a draw on the engines power, slowing it down.

Do you really wanna sit there resting your foot on the brake the whole way down a damn hill? Didn't think so, its simpler to have it on a dash switch or on the wiper/flasher stalk plus wired to the brake and clutch pedal than on a push switch rigged only to the brake. That just seems dumb.

you misunderstood. i was pointing out there were no brake lights on with the jake in use. it's deceiving because the vehicle is slowing down, but there are no red brake lights to communicate this.

it sounds a lil pussyish...my dad had a 2000 kw t800 with a 470 detroit and a 3 stage jake exhaust under the cab and it sounded mean...he got 4 tickets for it..it was tht loud...if my dad kicked tht jake brake on and u were in a car next to him ud be deaf...and it also has to do with the tranny for all yall tht dont know...now hes got a freightliner with a 500 detroit 10 speed rockwell and 3 stage jake..same engine basically but different truck
