People also say we are all geniuses, not 100% true, sure im a business student doing a degree but same as some others here there are a shit load of things im not good at
I have a friend with AS. In order to *help* him cope, his parents sheltered him from the realities of the world. That only made his Asperger's worse. After a while, his parents took a more laissez-faire approach. He watched a lot of racy TV shows and R-rated movies. This did wonders for his socio-emotional development because HE COULD FINALLY UNDERSTAND NORMAL SOCIAL BEHAVIOR FROM OBSERVING CHARACTERS ON TV. Bottom line, PARENTS ARE NOT DOING CHILDREN ANY FAVORS BY CODDLING THEM.
@KroMcLovinFaSho While I am not sure TV is the best way to learn about life I agree with the sentiment. I have Aspergers but didn't know until later in life and I am thankful for that I went to normal school and learned to sink and swim on my own. I had some hard days sure and I have a hard time with seemingly easy shit like tying my shoes but I am a lot less socially awkward than a lot of people I know with Aspergers, because I wasn't sheltered
@misspinkpunkykat Are you on crack? First off, if anything Carl has HFA, definitely not LFA. D.W. acts like a four-year-old girl is supposed to act, and Buster acts like an 8-year-old boy is supposed to act. There is a huge problem with adults observing a certain type of behavior in children as 'autistic', when in reality it's just a phase that they grow out of.
@TheNiggafuck Or we could follow the footsteps of many highly successful people with aspergers syndrome such as Albert Einstein, Nikolai Tesla and George Washington, and live out our aspirations whilst possessing wealth and success in ways you couldn't fathom while cleaning the toilets of a McDonald's.
I have Aspergers and it sucks. Anytime I want to feel isolated from society Ill go try to talk to someone. When I want to hang out with my "friends" Ill text them and they say their busy all night; 30 minutes later on facebook they're like "bored, who wants to chill? And Im not good at anything either. :(
I'm surprised that they would talk about aspergers on a kids show like this. I watched Arthur quite a bit as a kid and don't at all remember this episode. They should've also gone into depth of how everything just seems like shit just like in the South Park aspergers episode. (Btw I'm an aspie too so I'm not really hating like those sick fucks on encyclopedia dramatica).
I am a 20 year old with Asperger's Syndrome. I was diagnosed when I was 3. I'm really into arcade machines and video games. He'll, I can even draw an arcade machine. I'm also really into Mario. I suck at making friends, so video games are what I really depend upon to express myself.
@RaguelAngelofBalance Wow, and some people call us aspies retarded. -_- There is NO medication for Aspergers Syndrome. THERE IS NO MEDICATION FOR AS. I have it so I know. So shut up troll. Educate yourself. webmd .com/brain/autism/tc/aspergers-syndrome-symptoms.
@RaguelAngelofBalance there is NO medication for Aspergers. only things that help is understanding and therapy. mainly therapy to help socialize. and part of that is to learn HOW to understand various forms of body language. since it is harder for a aspie to do so!!!
understanding on what a person on that point of the autism spectrum goes thru. as well as other aspects of a aspie's life and personality.
@sangeliastorck Its not hard for an "Aspie" to do anything, its other make it harder for them to be themselves. "Them" also don't understand and medicate them. Often give bad diagnosis for ADD or other mental issues.
AS is not a personality, everyone with it is different. I wouldn't say it is a disease though, I don't believe it is negative. Syndrome is the best word, as AS is best described as a collection of symptoms.
I have AS myself and I find this to be a good description a children's show, though I still need to look into what they did with the aspie character, they really didn't need to add in an entirely new character.
Sometimes I feel like I am the loneliest in the world like in high school people are talking but I know they won't understand me so I stay out of it and now my family and I are visiting new York and I just want to talk to one of them but they will be like "who r u?"
I praise PBS fot taking the effort, but Carl seems more LFA than Asperger's. Buster and D.W, seem to have Asperger's more than Carl does, But maybe that's because I have AS and was one of those "in your face" type kids and was always going on and on about my obsessions like Buster and his aliens and D.W. with her ponies and Mary Moo Cow.
the aliens on this planet seem a little too normal. they should cut their eys out or sth to make it more compareble.. or they should throu themselfes infront of moving cars and laugh about it.
@miouth150 and also I think the alien-plante should have only 10 hours a day. and you are used to have a 24 h day. but the day is only 10 h! thats a problem.
@miouth150 I think they're saying that their perception of the world relative to how it actually is more severe than the example shown in the video. I think the 10 hours a day thing might refer to how a lot of people with aspergers don't seem to run on a 24 hour internal clock.
Just when I didn't think I could love the arthur series any more..... I have Asperger's and Arthur has always been my favorite series, you can imagine my delight when I saw this!
Pretty spot on and easy to understand for kids:)It's nice to see Aspergers awareness becoming more active in society.Ive known u had Aspergers since I was six or so,but I was diagnosed at 2.The world around me is incredibly foreign sometimes but it's navigatable.
I have aspergers, I used to watch this and almost found it offensive but sadly true, however for those with it we are either really successful or complete failures
As much as I love this scene and this episode, I wish this scene had also had a bunch of those loud people talking at the same time without a single pause. As an Aspie I find that incredibly overwhelming and exhausting, especially if I'm trying to talk to one person in a room full of loud talking people, because I can't drown out the background noise.
I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2003. I was about 7 or 8. I kinda had the same thing as Carl. Whenever my dad would make dental clicks I went into a crying fit. Now, I'm 16 and have learned great social skills! My dad still makes dental clicks occasionally but all it really does is annoy the hell out of me.
I've been a Arthur fan for years and I never seen this one before. Kinda wished I saw this episode back when I was first learning what Aspergers is. Either way, it's a pretty accurate metaphor.
I luv Arthur I remember coming home from high school and watching it..... Thanks for this episode because now I have a son w/ autism..... its becoming more and more common.

Holy carp, that's pretty darn accurate. I'm very impressed how they could simplify what people like me go through for children to understand. I mean, I don't feel like the world is THAT weird to me, but that's after 7 years of Prozac and training does to you. The real sucky stuff, even when you get older, is the emotional instability. Off my meds, I can seem like a woman (I'm a dude, of course) on her period: I'm at every point on the emotional spectrum.
I remember this program :) I used to watch it when I was a kid :) I got diagnosed with AS when I was 7. I keep trying to figure out what it is but it never makes sense to me. It made me smile when the stuff he was saying I could relate to :) I understand AS better now :) Thanks for the video!
In fact so many people within proximity of me have it that I'm beginning to wonder if we're actually the weird ones.
