A few years back my girlfriend and her son wanted to crab down the jersey shore. I had never done this. I bought cages, rope, and chum. This is what the dude at the sporting goods store told me to buy. I threw these cages off the dock all night and caught nothing. These kids with chicken parts, string, and nets kept pulling crabs out of the water. I was such a fool.

If you go to the store and buy one you'll see clearly on the package they are named trot lines. The meaning behind that is that there is a trot between each hook tied to the line.

Thanks for the info, it makes a lot of sense. I did some more digging and it seems Kansas Parks and Wildlife Dept recognizes both trotline and trout line. That might be a regional thing up here I am guessing. No matter what you call it, it is still fun. A crab net is about $5 at the coast. The neck goes in the muddle and you use it off a dock. It allows you to catch several at a time without the getting out. Cute vid'

ahh yes when i was in Mississippi blue crab were plentiful..im uncle was a crab fisherman so one day he took us out and got us 250 blue crabs. and plus we would catch about 7-10 using cut up fish bait. but yea it was fun

We've got Stone Crab here in Florida... well we have all kinds of crab, but if you have to work at it, stone is the way to go. We only take the claw, and throw the crab back to grow another. We NEVER do this out of season, that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it... officer sir... got no idea how them claws got in that bucket... OH, I remember now... I found that bucket... and I was lookin' for you... officer sir... can I go now?

Dang, gettin' personal messages about jokin' about bein' "out of season". Let me explain about that.

The problem was never about Floridians Stone Crabbin'. My Daddy taught me, and his Daddy taught him the following rules. Don't take a claw from a female. Take only one claw from a male. If you find a male with one claw, leave him be. We all followed them rules, and spoke up when others didn't.

Then people started movin' to Florida. They would either take the whole crab, or both claws...

Then all them people started flushin' there toilets, and buildin' more roads and parkin' lots, addin' to the storm runoff. The polution, and miss harvesting caused the fall off of stone crabs.

It was never about a good ol' boy bringin' home a bucket of "Stones" for dinner. Then well off folks, who use to think "stones" were Poor Folks food, tasted em'. Next thing you know, "stones" got popular.

So if we forget what month it is... sorry.
