  • I have a 2004 with 140k miles. no such problems. I think this boils down to assembly and/or parts supplier thats been inconsistent. I love my van and will continue to buy Toyota's. I wish they were still made in Japan though. I also have a 91 Cressida with 256k miles on its original engine and transmission.

  • Make them in Japan. There will be no problems. Toyota designs very reliable quality cars but the domestic suppliers or assembly is not as good as Japan. So far my 07 has 90k trouble free miles. At least there is no danger in the door stop. Unlike Fords suspension that likes to rollover when a tire blows.

  • just happened to us.......drivers side door weld....just like the video.....4 months outside of warranty.....Toyota says... they are not willing to help

door $1875 plus labor....looks like the bean counters are running toyota

  • Have this problem also again. They had fixed it kinda before. Been a good van. Run flats biggest problem(worn out in 20,000 miles/ one set ----yes really) and huge huge cost cost(2004 sienna awd) but finally got smart and put regular tires on it. thanks for the video

  • i have this problem too(2004). Been much better than any Ford, Dodge I have owned by far. Thanks for your post

  • toyota used to build decent little cars but not today, I will never trust my family's safety to a toyota, NEVER

  • I have 280,000km on my 04'Sienna and it's been the most reliable vehicle I have ever had. Just replace altenator, and that clicking noise just started happening now. Other than that, no problems at all. Starts everytime, and it gets cold up here in Toronto in the winters.

  • i think its only a 30 dollar part, but the labour is extensive.

  • this is toyota, not ford. amount of things that fail in american made cars within 37 months is much greater than japanese made. (no i am not japanese)

  • Yep, thats what you get when you have Japanese cars made with components from other countries like Mexico. Come on Toyota! Just make em' in Japan, because it's just better quality!

  • I was never a huge fan of the Toyota Sienna. I've never owned or driven one.

  • YOU SHOULD BUY GERMAN NOT TOYOTA!!! BUY ALWAYS A MERCEDES-BENZ & BMW!!!

  • just don't buy a toyota, they are plastic and unrefined shitboxes. just buy a hyundai and save your self some money, they better built, quieter, and much more refined.

  • Mine crashed before that happened.

  • I have an AWD sienna. Had to have it towed to a tire shop when I got a flat on interstate 5 because they didn't give me a spare. 40 grand for a van and they won't give me a spare tire. They say runflats do the job. Well they didn't work for me. I also have a corolla. Had to overhaul the manual transmission at 100K miles. I have been driving a stick for 25 years. Did I also mention that a wheel bearing went out at 80K? That cost me 500 bucks! Now thats quality! I hate toyota!

  • Toyota uses cheap lowest quality components so things would break or fail after warranty. I'm not surprise at Toyota quality.

  • I experienced same problem. Dealer said they would 'replace' the door under warrantee and I would not have to pay the $2,200 cost. Commented that paint would not match and replacement of door did not seem to be optimum approach. Replied that body shop would attempt to 'match' paint but admitted with reds, it is difficult to good result. Is there not a more efficient and direct fix option, i.e. repairing the weld in existing doors?

  • It seem only toyotas made in the US have these defects. I have had too of them to date and have gone places with them in Africa. I found them reliable.

  • Our 2005 Sienna just got this problem. 5 years and one month old. Hope they will fix it for us free of charge! Never got that letter from Toyota!!

  • another reason why toyota sucks.

  • @xm177fullauto Stick with a Domestic? LMFAO!!!! domestics are junk!!!

  • my sisters 04 sienna does this with driver and passenger door as well...i think toyota needs to study back up on quality :(

  • Now, the spare tire is falling out the back. Imagine this happening on a major highway where speeds are in excess of 55 mphs or higher.

  • Toyota to recall 600,000 Sienna minivans over tire cables. Yikes!

  • I have the same problem

  • Fuck, i got a same problem. just prepare to fix it tomorrow.

  • This is bullshit how toyota can get away with this but if the big 3 had this problem it would be on the news everywhere.

  • This is bullshit how toyota can get away with this but if the big 3 had this problem it would be on the news everywhere.

  • sigh... i was going to buy a Toyota

    I guess not anymore

  • fat chance, toyota hid behind floor mats while people died in thier defective cars

  • Where is your website? Is it no longer active? Thanks! There are over 3,000 Toyota owners who want Mr. Lentz to take note of their dissatisfaction. We wonder if he will regain their trust as he claims publicly he wants to do.

  • @autoresearcher There is a backup of the original site at sites.google.com/site/toyotasiennadefects/

  • more people need to speak out. i think toyota should have to pay for everything else they have hidden in the past. they should be sued for faulse advertisement. toyota quality is a myth. BUY AMERICAN!

  • toyota owners recieve lots of "regular maintenance" from their dealership. its how they have earned their reputation for quality, because they secretly fixed their problems when in for maintence. toyota get away with too much! their trucks had frames that rusted in half. many toyotas have weak front balljoints which led to front tires falling off, and many people complain about their engines. they get really bad oil sludge that the engines need to be replaced. yet this never makes the news.

  • it happens only on ur van for not taking good care of it, mine is '04 and to this day nothing went wrong, just only change oil, and tires.... i bet you if u own any vehicle, it will be broken some how.... hahahaha

  • @yuavue

It will come and when it come you need to pay for it b/c it is more than 5 years on your van. How does that sounds to you? I found this door problem today and my van is a little over 5 years (one month to be specifically)

  • So you traded your American car in for this crap?

  • There has been a significant turn around in US name tag cars ie GM Ford Chrysler and many models are now rated best in class. Ford for example has done a fantastic job. Then there's the new 2010 Buicks which rates higher than lexus .Looks like US quality is on the upswing. But then a 1997 oldsmobile 6cyl gets better milage than a 2010 6cyl toyota whats up with that.

  • wow. what a pice of shit

  • When I buy a car, I buy the problem and fix it myself. When I don't like the problem I'll still buy it, if the price is right.

  • Toyota should bring those great forever running DIESEL cars they send to Costa Rica.

Not one diesel is sold in USA by Toyota.

  • Toyota Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The door failed at 48,000 miles. Luckily Toyota admitted the problem and took care of the repair. Now I'm worried about their cover-up of the accelerator problem.

  • just leave it closed

  • toyota suckssss!!!

  • Too bad Built in USA.

  • Watch the TOYOTA SLUDGE video here. Go to the "Toyota Owners Unite for Resolution" to join others. Go to toyotaoilgeldotcom for details. Read autoresearcher's channel page.

  • YEP. My Mom's Sienna has started doing this. I had found a diagram online showing the problem, but this video further supports what I suspected. Given Toyota's overall record, I would say this is forgivable. Consider how they are offering to fix them X 500,000 units- it is obvious why they surpassed GM and Ford in sales within the last two years. I love my old American musclecars, and I wish America were the manufacturing leader again, but Toyota has been making better cars for some time.

  • Every car has its problems. I just think Toyota and some of the Japanese automakers have been put on an impossible pedestal of perceived quality. Sometimes shit happens.

  • Toyota old quality always!!

    Nissan forever!!

  • Consumer Reports ranks Kia ( Killed in Action ) better than Nissan...now that's sad.

  • Toyota have not only been building boring cars for the past years, but now they are building dangerous ones...

  • my nissan transmision went 59k ?? nissan is lowsy quALITY .

  • @eternity77 lol really? out of all the jap cars, nissan and mitsu are the most unreliable (next to toyota of course) but i got a 00 pontiac bonneville 175k miles unbelievable quaility

  • ***Making it easy, easy on US!!*** not you.

  • I have a problem on my 07 Sienna. My motor and locking mechanism failed while the door was open. This left my wife to drive with the passenger side sliding door wide open to pick me up. Removed the bolts to the lock at the bottom of the door then re-installed it and now the door wont open. Better than being open. I'll find out if Carmax will cover on our ext warranty. They better.

  • We also bought our toyota sienna xle from carmax and our back doors both broke passenger first and then driver side just a few thousand miles out of manufacture warranty. Toyotat would dealers didnt take carmax's "extended warranty" so you are going to have to take it back to them to get repairs, unless you find a repair center who accepts carmax's extended warranty and its "used parts" clause and payment after they do the work.

  • i usually dont write to a comment after 2weeks old but did carmax replace it if not u should of left it alone n took it to them to fix right away or i hope that u lied n told them the door wouldnt open lol i think if u havent already get another car besides toyota maybe ull have better luck with that car then a toyota

  • This is covered under the front door check mounting panel warranty enhancement notification. Warranty period extended to 5 yrs or 100k miles. Models 2004 to 2007 Sienna.

  • My '04 Toyota Sienna passenger door fell off today. This is serious stuff. And guess what- the warranty just ran out.

This is pretty scary -especially with the kids inside. No, they did not cover the $900. labor costs.

  • Our Toyota Sienna 04 back passenger door AND a few months later the drivers side broke causing panel damages and we were out of warranty date also cables were defected and rusted and broke.

  • My '04 automatic passenger side door fell off the track and smashed my rear window in '07 after the cable snapped. Reported the problem to Toyota, no resolutions, dealer would not help either. If my daughter had been in the car she would have been covered in the glass.....I used to love Toyota, but lost all confidence after this episode.

  • got it fixed for free at my dealership

  • mmm, Toyota quality right there....

  • just a bad minivan, better to buy a chevrolet minivan, like me

  • no way, that thing is a death-trap.

  • toyota makes their ads seem like their cars are so reliable and they are not. just look up there problems online that they hide and many people dont know about them.

ill take my ford anyday! ill take any domestic for that matter.

  • Nah you see... Any make has their faults... GM's go on fire, fords aren't reliable...

  • i got an 04 sienna awd and an 02 explorer. sienna=ass load of problems. explorer=haha basically solid as a rock with a few minor exceptions

  • This very problem appeared on my '06 Sienna at about 30k miles. Toyota repaired the damage at a cost to them of about $900. It took several days but they gave me a loaner car for that time. I love the car and will keep it as long as possible. It is AWD and I can get 27.5 highway and about 19 here in town. I removed the foldaway rear seats to store a spare tire and batteries, isolator and inverter for camping. It will tow our camper trailer of 3500 lbs easily.

  • Mine just started last week. I was told that the Warranty was "extended to 60,000 miles. I have 61,200 miles. ARGHHH! I am going to call Toyota directly to complain. This is definitely defective craftsmanship and should be covered regardless of the milage on the car.

  • ha ha. honda odyssey pwns all!

  • damn, Toyota is slippin' thats like Chrysler quality right there. if you had that going on with your Chrysler and brought it in, they'd say "normal, within Chrysler specs", hahaha.

  • LOLLLLL dude thats hillarious. its more like dodge though.

  • shoulda bought a chevy.

  • Hi all,

I have this same exact problem just started last week, my 2005 Sienna is still under warranty......is it cover under warranty???

  • its a recall, they should fix it no matter wat.

  • yes fully covered

  • Toyota does everything it can to avoid a recall... TOYOTA DOESNT CARE! they dont want to pay for anything, so they wont issue a recall untill people are either injured or killed enough in that particular vehicle

  • i agree with you thats the truth

  • Toyota also REFUSED to admit to a design problem that causes ENGINE OIL SLUDGE TO DEVELOP. Engines have been failing for a decade and Toyota continues to blame the owners of its vehicles! Interesting, the information about this serious issue has been disappearing from the internet over the years. Does Toyota utilize one of the complaint-removal companies? Does your Toyota consumer lots of oil or failed emissions testing? Is is smoking like a chimney? You are not alone! Toyota Owners Unite

  • you must be referring to the four cam 3000 or whatever they call their 3.0. they sound horrible...you can tell they get sludged.

  • Shoulda Bought A Honda!

  • This is bullshit.. Toyota makes better and safer cars than anyone out there. if its out of warranty its out of warranty.. You don't expect ford to fix a pinto out of warranty..

  • why did you bring it at toyota near you

  • They have done something about this defect. They put out a recall on the van to get the door fixed.

  • I am looking for Sienna 2008 or Odyssey 2008. Which one is better?

  • if u want a comfortable car, u should get toyota. If u want a good and high quality car, chooose honda odyssey! It is ur choice!

  • Honda is a piece of shit, I know 5 people with Honda's that have either transmission problems or engine problems!! When it comes to reliability Honda can't touch Toyota.

  • i think toyota is better

    thats my opionion

  • sienna is better!! its part is easy to find

  • Honda, Without A Doubt! :)

  • oddy my moms got one its cool

  • same

  • 2008 odyssey!!!1 I got one buy dont buy sienna no offense LOL

  • I was almost killed by a defect in my 2003 Toyota Sequoia. Toyota refused to issue a recall for years, putting thousands of customer's lives at stake. The Toyota of today is NOT the Toyota of the 80's or 90's. Check out my video on YouTube - search for Sequoia Rollover.

  • i got a mail today for the recall for the doors. But my door is fine but i think it's starting to make popping sounds.

  • Did you buy it brand new or used was previously wrecked. Toyota can check serial number from previous record owner in wreck.. If it wrecked then body shop is responsible for warranty.

  • Probably very seldom in assembly line it may have mishap assembly line inspection or it may not have enough heat penetrating weld when weld machine start having problem. I would say the weld machine is the cause. All sheet metal mini van brands have same variance thickness. I do remember work on handicap mini vans on Ford( Mazda version) and Gm. I look under sheet when tearing carpet vinyl out all are somewhat metal forming poor quality.

  • you couldnt give me a toyota. id buy a honda before a toyota!

  • not even a supra?

  • Thanks for making this video, I wasn't aware of the problem. I recently bought an '06 Sienna, love it a lot, but if it has this problem, I'd like it fixed too!

  • it could be worse it could be a ford.

  • a ford isn't gonna fall apart like a soda/beer can toyota!

  • i liked my 1996 ford windstar than i like my 2004 toyota sienna, and toyota needs to offer the 3.8L that ford offered or the 4.2L that ford currently offers.

  • They have a 3.5L in them now that blows them all away, look at my 0-60 video of the 08)

  • Our 04 sienna only has 29K miles and has that problem. Just came back from dealer and he told that door needs to be replaced. Will take few "days" not hours. Toyota is giving a shitty ass compact rental while the 6 seater van is in shop due to manufacturer's defect. not fair..

  • Our 2005 Sienna has this problem right now! The dealer says it will take three days to fix and we have to get a rental (they'll pay). We also had to have the entire transmission replaced, and there is some problem in the structure behind the driver's left side, between the driver and passenger door -- it makes weird squeakings and noises -- the dealer says it's just "normal" noise so can't or won't fix it. There was also the seatbelt recall. After this, I'm going back to Honda!

  • No kidding, we just had to have our transmission replaced in our 2005 Sienna. A bearing broke loose and the car lurched forward, even in neutral. We haven't had the door issue yet. I can't tell from the video what the problem is.

  • Toyota just announced they will be fixing all Sienna's with the defective door, and they will return everyone's money back that already paid for the repair.

  • This is good news. Letters are supposed to be mailed to nearly 600,000 owners. It appears Toyota listened to customers who had the defect and will stand behind it for at least 5 years/100k miles.

  • Do NOT hold your breath if Bruce C. Ertmann is responsible for sending out the notices! He is the executive that halted the first round of SLUDGE LETTERS to Toyota owners. There are many owners who NEVER got a PROMISED sludge letter from Toyota. Toyota issues BOGUS promises, doesn't it? Behind the scenes, it does NOTHING!

  • i didnt get a letter and i own a 2004 toyota sienna with around 27500 miles

  • I just bought my first Toyota van because good ole GM stopped making them. It's a 2008 Sienna XLE Limited.

Anyone know if Toyota has fixed this problem with the 2008's?

    Thanks.

  • Lol @ asian vehicles.

  • There are 600,000 Toyota Vans with bad welds, the doors will have to be replaced to fix them. Make Toyota fix your van.

  • That's why there's the Odyssey.

To rule out EVERY single other minivan in the world.

    >:)

  • Um...the Toyota Sienna is Consumer Report's #1 rated minivan.

  • Exactly, our 04 has a lot miles on it and it has not had to spend one day at the dealer other than an oil change.(73,000 miles)

  • do you have a car toyota revo there is USA??

  • Update!

now at 80,000 miles and still trouble free.

We plan on keeping it forever.

  • yeah again same

  • PLEASE speak up about this problem. Do these things:

    1) Notify manufacturer via CERTIFIED LETTER.

    2) File online reports with NHTSA and CAS.

    3) Post on ConsumerAffairs(dot)com, RipOffReport(dot)com, and Toyota Owners Unite for Resolution.

    4) Post on car survey and car review sites.

    5) Be sure to keep copies of all documentation. Take pictures/video of the valve cover and oil pan area.

    6) Network with other similarly-affected vehicle owners.

  • Excellent video! Doesn't make sense, does it? Number one in sales with owner complaints escalating and blaming the owner for its inherent vehicle problems. Has Toyota actively sought to control online Toyota owner complaints? Well, one site with thousands of such complaints was continually hacked and is not defunct! Are current and would-be Toyota owners getting the whole story?

  • our has that promblem

  • My 2005 has the problem.

  • our 04 has no problems with the doors, and it has 63,000 miles. What does yours have?

  • Mine had around 45k miles on it when the welds completely broke in the door. Though it sounded like it needed to be lubed much earlier than that.

  • I read somewhere at Toyota as only added a total of 28 dealerships in the last 12 years to handle a more than doubling of sale and production volumn. Sounds like the N. American operations may be over-whelmed.

  • It could be that they are overwhelmed. However, this appears to be a structural defect that many more Siennas will experience in the coming months. All the dealerships in our city are aware of the issue. They are dealing with sometimes multiple issues a week. It is a manufacturer (Toyota) problem not dealerships... though it will impact dealers with loss of sales and reputation over time.
