omg you were so right! how could you know all the winners? maybe your experience, anyway,i don't think that the hurt locker deserved all those awards,i mean,a nice movie, but an education and up in the air were a way better than it...
ps:i like all your interviews and movie reviews! bye, from italy :)
James Cameron totally deserves to win an Oscar for best direction. Avatar was an insanely difficult picture to make and he's one of only 3 or 4 directors in the world who could have pulled it off.
Not unlike the Hurt locker which could have been made by almost any competent director. I could think of at least 20 or so filmmakers who could have made that film just as well is not better.
I doubt Avatar was difficult to make. Just look at it.
Avatar - an near-whole CGI/greenscreen world that can be completed by CGI artists and the what-not. There was nothing special about the effects in the movie(when compared to District 9's) so that couldn't take long. Cameras can be placed wherever Cameron wants, so its easier on his part. There are barely limitations in this picture, especially with the millions of dollars put into it.
And you are saying it was difficult? I doubt that.
@Xenda, actually any person can take a $300 million budget and put out a film with a shitty script like Avatar. It takes real guts to make a top notch action thriller like The Hurt Locker. which rightfully swept at the Oscars and the BAFTAS. I was laughing so hard when Cameron's ass was firmly planted in his seat all night!
I cant believe that people are so fucked up over The hurt locker. It was an avarage war film!! Jarhead was much better, and did not even got nominated.. THL is too overrated.
At the end of his life, the deadliest gunfighter of the Old West is given a choice: Hell or redemption. He chooses redemption and God's Archangel transports him to modern day Los Angeles to serve bloody, frontier justice on the worst dregs of society.
i like alot of what you have to say about film, you generally show a good appreciation of film but as "the movie guy" how can you ignore the significance of the cinematography and art direction categories?
Thank you...I made this for TV where my alloted time was 3 minutes...so I had to chop everything down...I'm posting my complete Oscar predictions on my website very soon...it's the same one that's appearing in Gannett newspapers as well where all the categories are included :) Thanks for watching!
But I also believe Mulligan deserves it over Bullock and Clooney over Bridges. I would also like Basterds to get the top prize (and Original Screenplay), but that's asking too much I think.
I would like to see either The Hurt Locker or Avatar win best picture. I loved both films maybe avatar just a bit more. IMO both deserve to win but only one can so ill be satisfied if eiter walks away with the award. Oh manny are you going to be doing anymore interviews or press junkets? Would love to see some more interviews. especially for Clash of the Titans. have a great weekend and keep up the great work with the videos
Hello there...yes, I'm more partial to Hurt Locker...and it already won the Directors Guild...so chances are, it's going to win the Oscars...I'm in NY right now for a 4-day press junkets...SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE, GREENBURG, GHOST WRITER , and REMEMBER ME...busy bee I am :)
Hey Manny what do you think will win best animated film? And are you also anoyed that Mary and Max didn't even get a best animated nom. This would be my anger level for what catogory M&M does not get a win/nom.
doesn't win best pic: A little anoyed but can still understand.
Doesn't get best pic nom: pretty angry (seeing as there are 10).
Doesn't win best animated: really really anoyed.
doesn't win animated: It's either a case of the events of The Hulk or The Shining really happening.
Yes, you're absolutely right! Mary and Max was a very underseen, underrated film! But "Up" will win Best Animated Film...the Academy will not give it the Best Picture title, even though it's nominated, but instead, will relegate it to the Best Animated category...
here's my list best actor george clooney, best actress sandra bullock, best supporting actor christoph waltz, best supporting actress anna kendrick, best director james cameron, best picture avatar
I love how you used "Married Life" from the Up score in the background. That song is joyous and sad at the same time (just like the film itself), something only Pixar can create. Anyway, great picks, Manny! I'm hoping for Quentin to win for Original Screenplay (The Hurt Locker is better overall film but the screenplay for IB was brilliantly crafted). Everything else I am much agreed on.
No, I didn't...it was right around December and there were so many films coming out and I just wanted to start my Christmas early :) But I enjoyed that film, especially Mulligan
I know...it's one of those films that I loved after watching it again...the first time, it underwhelmed me, honestly, the second time, I fell in love with it, but by then, I already made my top 10...and I kept on going back to the film for Carey Mulligan's brilliance!
Avatar will win Best Picture, mark my words. the Academy has gone with usually the highest or second-highest grossing of the nominees every year this decade, and it won't change this year. Hurt Locker is 9th, I believe, in terms of Box Office. It's just not going to make it.
Slumdog Millionaire last year was not a big blockbuster until the nominations...so was No Country for Old Men the year before...and the biggest blunder of 2008 was the omission of the Dark Knight in the Best Picture category, and that film made lots of money...
I'm surprised at how honest you were with these picks, Manny. I am sure many critics and reviewers either picked what they liked or was popular. It seems that everyone and their grandmother is picking Avatar as their best picture winner based on the fact that it was really popular at the box office.
I believe that Carey Mulligan deserves the Best Actress and it saddens me that Sandra is assured to win. and WOW I wrote that before you agreed with me! Great job Manny :D
Because it's not, no movie can be called "the greatest film ever made".
For me personally it's hard to pick one, I'd give the award to both but since James Cameron already got his share of Oscars in 1998, I think I'd go with The Hurt Locker. Unfortunately for that movie I don't think the Academy will shot themselves in the foot again and Avatar will probably win Best Picture.
your very good!
