LOL, I'm talking to Brian Bromberg on Facebook now and he's a really nice guy. I was asking him for bass recommendations and told him that his series looks good. He told me to go on Carvin and check 'em out and that he'd direct me to the salesguy if need be. Really interesting options as well. I swear I had no idea he did that solo on piccolo bass. On the album I always thought he got a guitar player to play it.
Headed to Hollywood Saturday for the Guitar Center grand re-opening. The Carvin factory outlet is across the street. Finally get to check out one of these Bromberg basses in person. Can't wait. I was all set to get an Icon, then they came out with the SB line which became my new desire, then these so now I'm really up in the air. I had a BB75 some years back and am still kicking my self for selling it. Hopefully they'll have something on the rack I like so I don't have to wait.
I thought the Dean B-2 was awesome. The headstock was so alien like, coupled with a Teal finish.....WOW!!! Carvin makes a great bass as well. Brian could make a broom sound great.
Very good bassist! But what's the need of a bass that sounds like a guitar?
Carvin makes terrific basses! I own two customized BB76P fretted and fretless. Terrific work on the bass, attention to details, terrific sound and very playable.
@Jpkrao It's called piccolo string, lighter strings might be a low G. Stanley Clarke, Jack Bruce and many others use this. Why not a guitar? Good question. I figure they use the bass strung this way because they're used to the bass layout and probably favor it. Plus they don't really have to think about it, just blow through those passages with using the attributes of 4 strings and the string spacing that they have grown accustomed to.
@heday60 Super cheesy name for a song but I'll be damned if it ain't one of the funkiest tracks around. Was totally jammin' on it in my car yesterday on the way back from a gig.
@spoombung Not at all. We've been working with Brian for a year on the overall shape, neck profile, pickups, preamp etc.. It's a whole new bass. It's going to similar to this old bass because it's Brian's bass.

Phrase at 1:12 really sounds Jaco-ish. Check out Brian's version of Come On Come Over.

Great bass player, cool bass (though I'm not big on that color).
I like how he credits Dave Weckl while reaching for the piccolo bass. Seems like a decent, down-to-earth guy. Thanks, Carvin.
