@MrRandomgarbage your 1/2 right. Windows 8 will come out in 2 versions ARM (tablets) and x86 (desktops and laptops) the x86 one will be more full featured and less touch centric while the ARM one will have a little less features but much touch centric.

by 2012 open source apps like Open Office and Gimp might actually be decent. I also predict that big name game companies will be starting to release their PC games for Linux too. Windows XP SP3 will continue to receive security updates until 2014 anyway so even if you're a Windows guy you can continue to use the last good version that was released before they completely dicked around with everything.

Windows 8 will need to come free in cereal boxes if they want anyone to use it.

The stats that I have seen put Windows XP usage at over double Windows 7 usage, and Windows 7 only 5% ahead of Vista. That's based on web clients so I realise they're only rough figures. I suppose the numbers are skewed a bit by business computers too. But if Windows 7 was good then surely businesses would use it?
