How did you make your extended lens hoods, especially for the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8? It's something I have wanted to do to my lens but do not know which is the best way to do it.

Thanks to your effort to write in English. English is not my first language either!
Digital photography is not cheap! Actually it is more expensive than film photography, expect if someone just shoot with no reason, so doesen't care how many photo will loose due computer or external hard drive errors.
Digital photography is not booming cause it is cheap. It s booming all over the world, cause easy to cheat using Photoshop or other computer manipulation.
I can't tell the cost. Photography is not a cheap hobby if someone do it seriusly. I bought all these stuff piece by piece during many years. My Pentax Z1p camera was bougth in Hungary in 2000, and I can't tell how much was it in dollar. I bougth my 300-800mm Sigma lens in 2005 and I paid $ 5000.- for it, but today it is more than $ 7000.-
So it is hard to tell how much they are did cost me because when I bought some stuff the value of the dollar was different!
hello, just askin whats the name of that thing that looks like an antenna...looks like it should be put on the hotshoe..flash?? many thanks..awesome gear you have...
That thing is a PocketWizard radio trigering unit. You can see four of them close to the end of the video. This radio trigering units can trigering remote flash units up to 1600 feet (500meter) One unit must be to attach into the camera hot shoe as a sending unit, te others must to connect to the remote flash units. With a right cable it can trigering the camera too.
It said in one of your videos that this is a hobby of yours. Looks like it has become more of a hobby. :) I'm starting to look for a setup up from a Cannon Powershot 5S IS any suggestions on a camera to but, or stick with the powershot? (Sorry to bug you with a question.)
What kind of camera you need is depending on your photography! You ever miss a shot just becouse the lack of feature of your camera? If not, you not need "better" camera because that will not improve your photography. If you experience a lot of lack of features of you camera, you need to upgrade to a camera body which has those features, you need. If you know what features you missing you know which camera you have to choose.
Choosing a camera body is wery easy if you know what you want, if you have the right photography skill. If you don't have that skill you not not need other camera, you are fine with, what you have now.
Hey, is the movement of the gimbal head very smooth with big lenses? I'm going to buy one and I'm recording nature videos too, but I'm not sure is it smooth enough for video. I've been searching good video head too, but I haven't found good enough (price too)...
@FinlandApollo The Gimbal head wery smooth but it is not good for video in my opinion. For video you need some resistant on the movements otherwise the video image gets too shivering. It is too easy to get in motion even heavy weights with the gimbal head. Plus, the videocamera not fit on the swinging arm! Not enough room for that. For video I recommended a special video head! Manfrotto do good ones!
@attilakegyes Well, I'm not using normal video cam, I use my D300s as a videocam :D But hey, thanks very much, you prevented me from using 600$ for piece of tool which I don't have any use (I don't say it sucks)
If you do still photography with big telefoto lens exlouding variable lenght zoom lenses, the Wimberley is the best investment. But just because it is the best for still pohotography, is not mean it is best for video. It is usable for that too if you use still camera for video, but in my opinion for motion picture you need a tripod head with a smoot and constant resistance! This need for smoot and even panning or tilting. Otherwise the movements can be little bumpy on a video.
Here is the question: Do you do more still photography and few video, or you do more video than still photgraphy. If you do more video, the D300 was a wrong choice, because you need a camcorder a videocamera, not a still camera with some video functions. In this case you need a good special video head.
If you do more still photography with big telephoto lenses, but sometimes you do a few minute video footage too, the wimberley is the better choice for you!

If you do more still photography with big telephoto lenses, but sometimes you do a few minute video footage too, the wimberley is the better choice for you!
Good choice if you use big and heavy telephoto lenses, like 300 f/2,8 and bigger. But keep in mind, with zoom telephoto lenses which change lenght (and center of gravity) during zooming like Sigma 50-500, you can't enjoy of the advantage of Wimberley.
@attilakegyes Oh...damn...I'm using Sigma 120-400 and the center of gravity changes....but....oh damn, I buy a wimberley because I use that lens 95% of the time fully zoomed to 400mm :D Thanks for advices!
the 300-800 could have been such a better lens if Sigma had made it a variable aperture lens. at 300mm with the size opening that it has, it could be an f/2.1 lens. if you don't believe me do the math; 800m/5.6 = 142.86 300mm/2.1 = 142.86. At 400mm, the lens could be f/2.8, at 500mm, it could be f/3.5, at 600mm it could be f/4.2, and at 700mm the lens could be f/5. Does anyone have any reasons why the might not have done this?
If you chek it out not just Sigma, but non of the manufacturer make such a variable aperture lens.
Why?
Because in a prime lens the magnification (focal lenght) are always a same so the certain physical diagram opening create a certain aperture value, and it is never change! In other hand always a same amount of lights can get trhough on a certain physichal opening.
In zoom lenses a consequence of moving optical elements front of the diagram, the angle of the lightrays are change, therefore change the amount of lights can get through on a same physical size opening of the diagram. As you zoom out optically the diagram get smaller therefore less lights can get through. That is the reaosn why they are can1t achive such a variable zoom lens you "dream about".
i love sigma glass---my 50-500 bigma i swear is as sharp as my 70-200L ------ and weather sealing, ive been in heavy rain tonnes and never had any water issues
@FinlandApollo Honestly, I don't know about that, but I believe in a lens like this it must be a standart feature!
I'm not a millionare, so I can't afford to risk an expensive lens like the Sigma 300-800 so even if it has weather sealing, I still cover it in rain with a raincoat.
Othervise I did use it in a morning mist, standing in a swamp when the lens was lightly wet all ower, without any problem.
@attilakegyes I asked Sigma, none of their Lenses are weather sealed! with weather sealing it will cost a lot more than it is now! It can handle light rain though.
Is Sigma 300-800mm worth of money or do you know any better lens for nikon? I'm photographing birds, eagles, foxes and many other and I want supertele photo lens. I'm going to buy that 300-800mm but is bit too expensive. I don't want to pay 8000$ for shitty lens.
Yes it is worth the money! Well build opticaly high quality lens. I got awarded photo which was taken with the 300-800 + 2x telekonverter at 1600mm with 1/30 shutterspeed. In a print size 19x12 (48x31cm) still everything is perfect!
@attilakegyes it means if you are that guys Neighbor he would've killed you and took everything and run away to the desert and live there alone .. i would do the same thing but i will ask your permission first :P
Some old Kodak Caorusel, nothing fancy. I got some older straight tray projector too but I didn't use it long time ago. I don't even know it's brand right now.
Nikkor 70-200 VR II vs Sigma 120-300; both f/2.8 & w/VR II being the only option available now at at increase already of $500 over the original VR, any chance to compare the two yet? Tempting to add another $500 & go the Sigma route (already own a Bigma) but your opinion on usefulness for indoor auditorium or church/museum shooting aka thus limited lighting and flash not allowed. Focus fast enough to be able to lock moving people of a performance under less-than-ideal lighting? Thank you in adv.
they aren't really meant to be compared. the nikon 70-200 is a lens that is meant to be carried around all day, whereas the sigma is mainly meant to be used in sports where 200mm is not long enough but f/2.8 is still required. the sigma 120-300 is a very niche lens, i don't see much uses for it other than sports in low light. plus the sigma is extremely heavy compared to the nikon 70-200.
With string wrapped around I seald all the turning parts preventing any paint get under them. With masking tape, I cover all the parts I didin't want painted. Then I cut few different pattern out of paper and with spray-paint I painted the lens trough those patterns.
Chek out my "Macro sniper" videos, about my new piece of equipment, I just made myself. That is a zoom close up photography gear made out of plastic drain pipe and a wooden sliding frame.
The lens hood for the 120-300 made out of plastic water pitcher. I cut off the handle, and the bottom, where was fit tightly over the original lenshood, then with duct tape I fasten them together. Then I cut off the front of the pitcher make the lenshood as long as I wanted but avoid any vignetting. Then I make a camo cover to outside and a black flat cover to inside.
To me the most used lens is a Sigma 300-800, so I can say that is my favorit lens and the Nikon F6 is the favorit camera but it is depend what I'm photographing!
Sigma is very good. I believe they also manufacture lenses for other companies, such as Olympus. So, even if you have an Olympus logo on a lens, it could be a lens manufactured by Sigma.
Hmmm... Hard to say because some things was bought in Hungary (Europe) more than 10 years ago, some stuff I bought in USA 7 - 4 years ago These stuff come together slowly in more than 10 years period. Becouse i use film cameras and Sigma optics actually cost less then a similar but digital equipment today. I bought a Sigma 300-800 for 5000,- USD in 2005. Today it's more than $7000.-! If you wanna buy the same thing today, would cost much more then cost to me during the years.
The Pentax Z1p was the best 35mm film camera of Pentax. Not long ago I just build a battery grip for it, now I can use with 4 AA batteries! (Pentax never make battery grip for the Z1p) Also I just build for the Pentax a zoom extension tube for close up, wich still under testing. I love the camera and I haven't even plan to swich to digital. My Nikon F6 for wildlife photos, my Pentax for landscape, and close up photos.
I'm very satisfied with Sigma EX lenses. Sigma had other than EX lenses, those are not as good quality, lenses and they are for mostly amateure use.
The Sigma HSM just as fast than Canon USM or Nikon SWM. The lenses are well build, quite, fast. In optical quality They are on the top. Unlike by Canon, all the lenses came with lenshood. One thing I miss on Sigma telephoto lenses, an AF limit swich. That's would be nice, but I can live without it.
When I did paint it, still wasn't available lenscoat for the Sigma 300-800. (it is now)
I covered everythin on it with painters masking tape what I didn't want to paint, like aperture scale etc. Then with a string, I wrap around several times where the edges of the focus and zoom rings, to prevent getting any paint under the rings. After I sealed it everywhere, I cut different shapes from thicker paper to use for pattern. Then I painted with spraypaint one color at the time.
How did you make your extended lens hoods, especially for the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8? It's something I have wanted to do to my lens but do not know which is the best way to do it.

I love my pentax Z1p too!

Do you still want your Pentax stuff? Cause I am interested... :D

Yes I want it. I'm sorry....

But I'm happy, still photographers, around who interesting for film photography!
Go for it, there is no better than film photograhy.
There is an easier vay to make pictures but no better way to taking photographs.

how has your experience with sigma been as far as product quality goes, should I buy a lense from them? thanks

Cool paintjob on the 300-800 - I went the lenscoat route instead.
How did you paint it?
