Very helpful video, I actually have a question, at what rpm would be the right time to shift? I noticed that sometimes at work I drive a rig and it pulls at 4th gear. I think I'm shifting early... plz help Lol
In Europe it's not compulsory to double-clutch.. trucks therefore accelerate and go straight to the speed limit faster. really what is the point of double clutching if it's just to be "safe" you go out of the gear? Okay for learners, but after 4months of driving a truck I guess you don't need to double clutch anymore..
it's actually pretty easy, only 1 thing sucks. if you're used to a car, then you'll probably end up crashing the what ever sits behind you because what supposes to be first gear, it's reverse in the truck...but the rest is very easy and the speedometer trick is extremely useful
Hey man, You still with USX? I ran into in Springfield, waiting for the Greyhound to take us away and then I ran into you at the Markham terminal, you had that lil guinea pig with youy. Hope all is well man. Keep on Truckin!
Thanks man this video seems to be quite helpful I take the road test tomorrow I think I will do well, once again thanks for a very informational video
I thought it was a "no-no" to toggle the range selector switch when the shifter was in the neutral position. I recall you had to always toggle the range selector switch when in a gear.
ok, in downshifting, lets say ur at the 7th gear and you're slowing down and wanting to get into a lower gear, probably 4th gear, do i have to go in an order from 7th, then 6th, then 5th, then 4th, or can i just shift it to 4th directly from 7th, if the speed matches the 4th gear level????
@Saladon89 You can go to whatever gear matches your road speed so you can skip them as much as you need/want. Often when starting out on a downgrade when I'm in 2nd I'll put in the clutch, come out of 2nd gear and by the time I can get the clutch back in I'm already too fast for 3rd, so I'll skip right to 4th. Not a problem.
@fatdrunkstupid78 You are correct - some trucks have clutch brakes that activate when you fully depress the clutch pedal and in those trucks you don't want to go past 1/2 way when shifting.
Why do you have to double clutch? why can't you shift direct into the next higher/lower gear. What happens if you try to go direct? Also, what happens if you float shift and miss a gear? How do you know where to pick up again assuming speed is coming down and you need to match rpms. Thx.
@78nyjets You may not be slowing down enough for the gear you want to go down to. Also, don't ride the clutch. Only depress the clutch when you start to move the lever, otherwise you won't make that smooth shift.
In the Kenworth I drive I let the RPM's fall down to 11, push in the clutch and go to neutral, pull out of the gear I was in and line up for the next one, then I rev up to about 16 and then clutch and slide it into the gear.
when coming up on a quick stop do you just brake / clutch then go into neutral to come to your stop or do you brake clutch or stay in the gear you are in and start off in that gear that you were in ?
@draleighd I try and downshift when stopping, but if I have to stop fast I put in the clutch and brake to a stop. Then I line up for the gear I'm going to start in (1st, 2nd, whatever). Put a little pressure on the shift lever and let up the clutch to about halfway and it will drop into gear. Let up the clutch the rest of the way and you are rolling.
be safe and God bless you sir

Great video bud, if you get a chance do one on a 18 speed, I've seen a lot of people on here looking for a video like this but can't.

a high range gear into a low range gear
