This riot started for the same reasons that the G20 riot started by the way. Because police baton charged a peaceful sitdown protest outside Downing Street. People were then chased and batoned in Trafalgar Square and mown down with police horses. There were dozens of injuries amongst these protesters at the anti-poll tax demonstration in 1990.

Also, the current Credit crisis had nothing at all to do with 'regulation'. In fact, quite the opposite. It was the relaxing of lending regulations (because the mortgage market was saturated), that lead to lenders taking more & more increased risk.

Once regulations were loosened, banks began lending in risky sub-prime & Alt-A sectors & attempted to spread the risk in securities & derivatives.

This is a major point: The Market doesn't factor in risk effectively! Free Markets lead to crisis.

Corporations absolutely do receive bailouts, etc. But corporations also write the laws, the regulations you speak of (i.e. it's ok to have market to market on the way up, but let's switch to current cash flow accounting on the way down.) To say that a government can write and enforce regulations that are somehow not defiled by the immense omnipresent political force of corporations (wall street) is not right. They're hand in glove with each other.

The current crisis absolutely had everything to do with "regulation". This was in the form of interest rate setting by the Federal Reserve - held far too low for far too long. The market was not free to set these on its own. Also, this regulation was in the form of pushing Fannie and Freddie to back mortgages to subprime borrowers. Artificial low interest rates combined with bad monetary policy and artificial "ownership" society (Fannie and Freddie) gave us this crisis - read: government.
