"Seeing Sound Waves" is incorrect. Its a metal plate that is forced to oscillate @ the center via harmonic motion. The frequency of the vibrations increases though-out the video hence the increase in pitch volume. Sound is not making the patterns. At certain frequencies, called natural frequencies, the plate hits resonance. This means some of the surface of the plate remains still. This is where the "rice" gathers and a pattern is formed. The pattern is called the Mode Shape

Although solving the equations will require advance knowledge of calculus and linear algebra.
