i absolutely love this tune, known these huys aw ma life and plan on makin ma weans love them just as much as maself and father and his father before...
I'm a proud Englishman... but I was turned on to The Corries about a million years ago by a Scottish teacher. They are magnificent and Johnny Lad is an absolute classic. The Corries can make you laugh and cry in the course of the same album. They were true geniuses and loved south of the border too.
You're right , EMesaros, "Shu' up" is closer to it. But I love that and the way Roy laughs at him. A great moment.
I'd point out that I love this -- but I say that about every Corry song. I always found this the funniest of their comedy ones though.
My all time favorite is Liberty though. The best song they ever did, even better than Flower of Scotland and when I say that, as usual I make someone mad. lol
I always assumed they were saying shoon until i found the lyrics on the internet where it said shin. But I think you're right. Shin doesn't make sense but shoon does.
To Sexysixpackboy--Lol oh what a name! Here's another verse I picked up fromthe Clancy Br.--Now Johnny is a bonny lad; he is a lad of mine: I've never had a better lad though I've had twenty-nine!
To Jeannie Tomllin--Oh yes! "shu' up," more precisely! I just love Ron Brown in this! He is so brilliant, and he always seems so dignified and grown-up, and here he is being the complete ROWDY! Love it!

fab - "english home rule!" Whit a great, unthreatening way of putting it. And in a fbb song

I don't have the lyrics to that particular verse, but it is a great one!
JeannieTomlin 2 years ago
The Duke was in the parlour eating bread and honey
The Queen was in the treasury fiddling Scotland's money
And wi' you and wi' you and wi' you, Johnny lad
I'll dance the buckles off my shin wi' you my Johnny lad
Now Johnny was a bonnie lad until they took him in
He had his operation and now they call him Mary!
And wi' you and wi' you and wi' you, Johnny lad
I'll dance the buckles off my shin wi' you my Johnny lad

And then I got a penny back tae buy tabaccy wi'
And wi' you and wi' you and wi' you, Johnny lad
