I wouldn't have completely condemned the calipers. Your problem sounds like the slides on the caliper. They have the little rubber boots on them. They can get dirt in them and get sticky. you can usually take them apart, clean them and lubricate them. Oh well, sounds like it wasn't expensive to just replace the caliper though.
