I remember the Holmes-Ali fight as a kid. My Dad believes there was a friendship between Ali and Holmes. Never believe there was a bad blood between them until this video.
Holmes enjoyed portrayinging the "bad guy" which was his way of creating interest in a lackluster division (after a great era of HW boxing). Holmes must be respected for his excellent overall ability and particularly his business intelligence........like putting money in the bank instead of losing it in bad investments like so many other atheletes have done. I don't "like" Larry but I smile when he is interviewed.
This is the 31st anniversary of this fight, today, July 7, 2011! I remember this fight from when I was a kid. This is when the majority of these heavyweight championchip fights were on free television. It really gave you something to look forward to when as a kid you found out that one of these Holmes fights were going to be on television, even though you knew he was going to win! My family and I had just got back from Summer vacation at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia! What Memories!
@Molcinrocks Wasn't it the greatest when the local stations carried title fights? Another thing back then that's different now was that back then the whole card was start-studded. Today's punk ass, diva boxers couldn't share a card with other big name fighters. Greed, lack of exposure and poor match-making is killing boxing today. We watched boxing as a family every time "the fights" would come on.
fuck u larry. Ali was the reason u got to the point in your career u were at at that moment, the champ. For you to say Ali was broke, and he needed you and you didnt need him, shows what a low-class chump you've always been, u pussy ass nigga. Classic larry holmes, no class at all.
Cosell was right. This demonstration was "unseemly." LeDoux was never in the fight; it was a glorified sparring session. Ali's post-fight act was cheesy if not pitiful. Sure, Holmes wasn't "Mr. Personality" and always had a mouth full of sour grapes, but he always told the truth. Holmes said he would crucify Ali and 3 months later he did, which wasn't startling because Ali had nothing at 34 yet alone 38, as he was here. Even Cosell seemed to be without any "spiz." Again, "unseemly."
For those who don't know why the crowd is booing, it's because Larry thumbed Scott in the eye - it started to close and the ref stopped the fight.
Larry was winning the fight easily anyway, but everyone assumed he'd knock Scott out in 3-4 rounds and when it didn't happen and he couldn't get Scott out of there he resorted to thumbing him. Replay showed he absolutely thumbed Scott.
@zenmachinefilms I did not see a thumb, personally. Typical Ledoux to complain in defeat. If anything, Ledoux should be grateful Holmes gave (or the WBC forced) him a title shot. Cosell is right. Ledoux should have thumbed Holmes back. Holmes jab was too much for Ledoux, end of story!
@tightmadnesss - True, but if the slow motion replay were here you'd see it was a thumb. But there was no way Scott was going to win the fight. End of story indeed.
@videor44 How the hell is he the uncrowned champion - he was getting the living shit beat out of him. Larry literally beat him from pillar to post. Just beating the shit out of him. Knocking him down, closing his eye, jabbing him, right hands, uppercuts. Just a beating. Where was MMA when he needed it. That's a sport for people who can't fight. Just kick and wrestle.
@8524frank you're a fucking idiot, any great fighter from 70s would dominate this era.

History revisionists try to portray Holmes as the person calling out Ali, but as you can see, Ali is the instigator.
