I don't buy it. In the movie, there was no beam below where Kate Beckinsale stood. The beam in the experiment clearly prevented the sandbags from falling through. And the fact that Tory could stomp through the beam seems to be enough proof to me that if the beam wasn't there, the sandbags would have fallen through, thus proving that this myth is true.
