okay now, i am a hard ass metallica fan, and i respenct every member that is, and has been with metallica, but i will have to step forward and say rob is a MUCH better bassist than cliff, reasons why..........cliff can only play metal bass, thats it, rob can funk slap, sweep , prettey much play every genre of music, people only think cliff is a legend is because he died. HE ISNT THAT GREAT, i dont see why people cant just wake up and see that

i think its whatever kind of Metallica you are looking for.

Robert has a jazzy warm metallic bite sound wile Cliff has a bit of a dryer distortion based bass.

so if you like distortion and true 80's Metallica vibe then Cliff is your man

but if you like deeper warm pure tone then Robert is your bassist.
