Something I have found helpful when practicing double tonguing on the Bach CM, the back of the tongue seems a lot less coordinated so I do the whole exercise single tongued on T/D, single tongued on K/G then tongued backwards.. KTKT and finally forward TKTK.. I feel like it helps the back of my tongue catch up to the speed of the tip of my tongue. It kind of goes hand in hand with Nina's first articulation video. Just a thought, hope it helps somebody :D
@Maixa02 once you get a grasp for double tonguing in the low octave the high octave should also be responsive as long as the aperture remains relaxed without excess motion. If you are having difficulty it might be an air speed issue, make sure you are using enough abdominal support to create the air speed you need in the high register. I think as long as you are relaxed in the face and using the right kind of air you should be able to double tongue anything
Can you give me some tips on tonguing? I've always played my flute without tonguing for about 3 years now and i've gotten into the habit. I try to tongue but i can't get it to move fast enough so it sounds really bad....can you help me?
Hi Nina, I can't wait to go try all your new tips!
I noticed in the close up that you play with your top lip a little pulled to your left. I have a very off center embourchure, but it doesn't affect my sound. Between practicing and a preexisting TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problem, I have a constantly tight jaw. It starts to hurt after only a half hour of playing, and by an hour I have to take a break. Have you experienced any jaw soreness as a result of an off center embouchure? Thanks!

Hi Nina, I watched all of your articulation videos in hopes for some depth into lower register double tonguing. Should there be more, less tongue movement? Air? My lesson teacher has given me several pieces with double tonguing, and it's been frustrating!
wow u really are an amazing player! this video really helped me with my double touguing but i think u should also teach techniques u could use on the piccolo because as similer as the flute and picc seam the way u articulate is actually very diffrent. so please show some techniques on the piccolo for some of us piccolo and flute players
Thank you Nina ! I have a question, when you play, is there air going across the flute? Because I feel there is like a "gas leak" on the other end of the hole, wasting the air. And is it normal to feel the cheeks kind of sore? or am I using too much cheek muscles?
Nina... I just saw this video for the first time. The embouchure close up is SO helpful. I rarely know why I do what I do or why it might work sometimes and not at all another time. This gives me something to go by. THANK YOU!!!
the embouchure close-up-part was just what I needed. Thank you so much. It's so wonderful that you bother spending all this time making these videos. Much appreciated.
1. Your reading my comment 2. Now your saying/thinking thats a stupid fact. 4. You didnt notice that i skipped 3. 5. Your checking it now. 6. Your smiling. 7. Your still reading my comment. 8. hi nina. this is the first time i ve heard of you. Yet, u seem to contradict at least half of what i was taught. its very interesting. ONe thing i would appreciate you clarify is, you know how people tell you to roll in when playing low and out when high? in the close up of ur embochure i didnt notice any rolling. so are we meant to roll?
4gottenlv: I disagree about the rolling in and out! Rolling in to play the low register will usually make the notes fail to come out, causing the player to roll in more, making it worse until the player smashes the flute against the wall in frustration. Rolling out in the top register is just a way to make the player resist the temptation to roll in for high notes. IMHO the flute should stay more or less in position with only minor minor adjustments occasionally for intonation.
i agree with u on that and believe that my teacher is wrong. but that doesnt solve my problem tho. when i play middle register, im in tune, when low register i go flat and when high register i go sharp. So what should i do to tackle this? thanks for replying by the way! it really helps a lot
if you roll in when going lower (if you are flat in the low register) then you will only go flatter.
if anything roll out. But, there are some suttle changes in your lips you will eventually learn to do if you play long tones with a firend and tune to them wile playing, don't move the flute, only your lips. I only recently learned this, but it works so much better than rolling, you basically aim the airstream differently.
I am trying the double tonguing on the Bach Sonata in C. I actually have to play it at a solo festival, and the presto part of the first movement is killer when it gets to the sixteenth notes. It seems like my tongue is going faster than my fingers when I say "Tuh Kuh"...does that make sense? Any more tips would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you.
I am just in the last couple of years revisiting my flute playing. I have not consitantly played since the late 80's when I was still in High School. I really appreciate these tongue techniques. Suprisingly my tone seems to still be intact but I have forgotten alot of other things. Thanks so much for these helpful hints..

Why do you play this old stuff, which has been played many times far better by old french flutists, who wasted a lot of their lifetime for these old dead pieces?
What do you think of contemporary music?
I love your newer pieces so much!!! Please, please!
Dead pieces? I don't really hear Nina doing dead - she seems to be pathological life - she can't do anything without making your ears tingle for hours in aftershock.....
Nina, you're so ridiculously fabulous! I love your playing, keep up these videos. It gives me a new perspective on not only teaching, but performing as well.
I really enjoyed your video. How is that it sounds like single tonguing but is double tonguing...i mean that in a good way, just sure not how to describe it. I guess the notes are just really even.
Frustration is part of learning. Dunno how many times I wanted to throw it against the wall ... took me tears, practicing 3 hours a day, and a YEAR to get the sound I wanted (sort of Rampalish with Hubert Laws in it), good rich bottom register. Stick with it.
If I ever become as good of a flute player as you, I don't know how I'll have done it. I figured out how to double tongue a long time ago, but I didn't know it was an actual thing! That is such an interesting warm-up, I need to try it!
I use this exercise in my teaching as well for double tonguing. I think maybe it was Debost? Baker? (I can't remember)but one of our great flute pedagogues said that he used this every day as a double tonguing exercise.
jrbrook76: I learned this specifically from Marion in Paris but using the Baker and Brad Garner also used the C Major to practice articulation although I don't know if they used the tongueless method or the double stroke method with it.
thanks..i will try what you do a the beginning as exercice whan i work C.Bach.i do it sometimes when i beginn to play , 'sons filés' in saying Hu Hu...good exerice to place the sound..
If you can say the word "Can't" you can touble tongue. Try it on some scales using the Kuh sound to articulate. SLOWLY. K-K-K-K Then work on K-T-K-T and build up your speed each day with as many different variations as possible. K-K-T, then T-K-T, then K-K-K, K-T-K-T, T-T-K-T.
Saying "kit-ty kit-ty kit-ty" is helpful as well. I use it to reverse the articulation in this work without getting myself confused or thinking I'm on the wrong syllable. I usually sing the whole thing that way without the flute a couple of times before I try and play. It's fun to do in the car when no one is around :-P
bravo once again! lol i have major problems with double tonguing ive been trying to learn for this once pice for band im going to take your advice thanks! once agin though great vids! =D
I practise my "double coup de langue" exactly one year! I practice every day the moyse arpeggio . After that a practised from g2 --> t tkt t tkt t tkt t tkt etc... g2 gis2 g2 a2 g2 b2 ...And then I try to imited some "popular" flutiste !I hope you understand ?!
