@afertyus1000 I have listened to multiple takes on these transcendental Etudes, and really Berezvosky really nails it. There are some however I believe Berman plays slightly and Arrau better again.
Etudes were composed to let a player perfect/enhance a particular technical skill. For example, La Campanella was composed to help players strengthen weak fingers and provide jump dexterity. Same can be said for this etude and many of Chopin's etudes.
@newFranzFerencLiszt To dominate the tècnica, it is lògico that one touches of diverse ways. Always respecting the melody of the work to the moment to touch it in pùblico. The problem is that on having stamped màs speed, in some intèrpretes it eliminates the lìnea melòdica and the virtuosity to be sòlo apparently. If you have both està well, and if not? In this second study, unfortunately Ritcher finishes the fortes grinding, throbbing and not touching.
It is sad that Art Tatum never took the classic music serriouslly !!! When i hear this ...i just make an exercisse of imagination of Tatum play Liszt !!! And it is scarring GOOODDDD !!!
I think that Liszt would not be happy with this ridiculous tempo. When you play this on a normal tempo, you can feel the devilish character of the piece much better, and hear what Liszt actually put into this wonderfull piece.
Bolet has a brilliant recording in my opinion. Listen to his version and compare it with this skipped through performance.
Only because it's Richter, does not mean that he plays everything right. Interpreting Liszt is definitely one of his weak points in my opinion!
Couldn't agree more, mate. Am great fan of Bolet's recording too. His superb musicianship is light years away from such rushing and crushing. Have never liked Richter either - except, perhaps, in some of the Beethoven's sonatas. But his Liszt, as well as his Chopin and Rachmaninoff for that matter, very often do I find ridiculously fast and artificial.
I agree about the prettiness. But the piece may sound much more disturbing when played more slowly and more expressively.
Of course I completely disagree about Richter's performance. Mindless banging, if there ever was one. Actually, it is even worse than Berezovsky - and I didn't think that possible.
@PandaGoesRawrr You're completely right though. Etudes aren't written to be pretty. They can be, because they do some neat stuff with your technical ability, but etudes are really written to challenge whoever is playing it. When Lizst's goal was to write something pretty, I'd say he did exactly that. Liebestraum? I'd say pretty.
Somehow, I think this is a respectable interpretation. I really do not care at all about his technical skill, but what it is, this sounds good in its own unique way. It is mephisto-like, I think, and that is what I like about it.
Nevertheless, Berman, Howard, Arrau, Ovchinnikov are great too, but I love Richter's uniqueness too.
Vladimir Ovchinikov - Liszt Transcendental Etude no.2 Is pretty good. I've listened to a lot of versions and still am. but so far vladimir ovchinikov is very magical when it comes ot this piece.
although I far prefer Berman, there's no denying Richter was a giant too and I agree with flicktwick. But, y'know if half the point weren't showing off your #$%@ , Liszt wouldn't have named the set as he did.
i do think every pianist has his/her right to play it, or have their own interpretation of the piece, as long as the musicality remains, fast or slow.
He has the figure of a criminal. I think if he didn't play music he would have been in jail. Hail Richter!

Richter has to play Bach only, not Liszt. He makes Liszt's music ridiculous.

@Jarnobh Your comment is ridiculous, not Richter's performance.
kzelmer 1 month ago
@kzelmer Not if you lisen to Cziffra's performance. Richter will never be a good Liszt-player, Cziffra is the only one who is that.

Molto vivace or Presto?
PercyEdwards 11 months ago
@PercyEdwards I think Liszt played this as a presto (it's a very show-off piece), but he wrote molto vivace to don't frustrate the pianist :D
you can play this as fast as you can. if you are richter you can. if you can, you can play this damn fast

In response to people saying it's not pretty because it's too fast.
Honestly, I doubt this étude was meant to sound "pretty"
I believe Liszt wanted the out of control feeling that Richter delivers perfectly.
Just my opinion, though.

he plays too fast. So he shows that he can play the piano well, but it doesn't sound beautiful.

@lolmaster23 it's an étude not a nocturne.

It is just showing off and not musical at all. Liszt would probably want to punch him.
