I am so sick of hearing complaints from whiney Mexicans who do nothing from bad mouth Americans. No one has to like you, demanding something for free and then trashing us for being angry when we're losing jobs says a lot about your people. If you want it earn it like the rest of us did and stop being a baby about people not liking you, grow up. Could be worse, you could be a Jew in a Nazi concentration camp so count your blessings, even if you are not fully due those you are granted in America.
I love to see people reminiscing as if those were magical times... Americans hated those same immigrants at the time, the same way they hate illegal immigrants today. Don't believe me? Ask your grandparents to tell you the truth. Larry David's character in Woody Allen's Whatever Works, "As soon as they came over - immigrants -, each ethnic group was met with violence and hostility. Each one had to claw and fight its way in. People always hated foriegners, it's the American way."

so then.. why is out there a lot of people against immigrants nowadays, we all are decedents from immigrants like this ( i'm Italian decedent ) unless you are a native american, racist people just forgot where they come from...
@2550505 I don't think you are aware of what percentage were coming into this country illegally. Many - who were just working - literally jumped ship when they arrived. You also have no idea what most of them would have done if they lived in a country bordering the US at the time, my guess is, the same thing Mexicans are - scratch that - WERE doing. People hate illegal immigrants because they are dumb and they need to blame someone for their problems and can't accept or understand the truth.
@2550505 Do you even know why you have a "problem" with illegal immigrants? Are those even your thoughts or is that just a punch line you keep hearing? These people crossed a desert to work for lower than minimum wage to feed their families, they choose to risk their lives coming here to work instead of pursuing a life of crime in their countries. They don't deserve being deported, they deserve a medal, and they certainly have done more to be Americans than you and me.
@ourwallaceclan Well, Russia didn't exist as a country back when the ancestors of the Native Americans arrived but yes, they crossed the Bering Strait around 12,000 years ago.
My family came from Germany in the 1840s. They went to New York and later generations settled in Louisiana where I was born. I am very proud to live in an immigrant nation.
@SnickleFritz79 Beautiful my ass! "Our" country is a hellhole I am suprised anybody even comes here! (except India) There is no such thing as american unless you were created there which in Christianity their were only Middle Easterners cause it all originated near Jerusalem but see that is another story children. lol :P
The irish are emigrating again, 1000 people leave ireland a week and go to Australia, Canada ,USA and New Zealand and other places . We are in such a mess, it`s time to abandon ship for most people and leave unfortunately .

I find the negative comments in regards to "foreigners" insulting. Most of us can date our ancestry back to other countries, so they were "foreigners". My paternal grandfather came emigrated alone with his 14 yo brother at the age of 16 in 1914. They came from Italy in hopes for a better future which they worked hard to attain. They learned the language, worked hard, married, raised children and voted. I am damn proud of that.
@scorpietta And I find it "insulting" that foreigners come to the United States who refuse to learn and to use the English language. I find it "insulting" that foreigners come to the United States and they refuse to conform to American culture, traditions, and our way of life. And I find it "insulting" that foreigners come to the United States and they talk about bad about our country yet they do not mind mooching off of social security, medicare, and medicaid.
@SnickleFritz79 Not all. My Grandfather learned the language and worked his ass off. He loved being here and raised 8 children who became respectable adults. We have hung on only to some of the food recipes, but no other traditions including the language.
As for traditions here in America, would you specify please? Religious holidays? Fourth of July? The Superbowl? Come on, I mean, really!
@scorpietta "As for traditions here in America, would you specify please?"
Perhaps you could tell me why the filthy Mexicans in Southern California think that they can lower the American flag from the flagpoles from schools, courthouses, and fire stattions and then raise the Mexican flag onto our flag poles?
If you are in the United States of America and are a citizen of this nation, then you should leave your former country's mannerisms and ways of doing things at the door.
@SnickleFritz79 First off, I haven't any idea why they would do that. Secondly, as I stated in my post, the only "traditions" that my family has held on to are COOKING RECIPES. That's it. If you bothered to read what I said at all, you would have seen that I am an American.
I was hoping for a half-way intelligent conversation with you, but you can't even answer my question to you. Now, goodbye. I shall not continue any further discourse. Go restore the U.S. flag, thank you.
@SnickleFritz79 Mexicans have never raised the Mexican flag and lowered the American flag in Southern California, you are making that up, you fucking lier. Why didn't the European wetbacks leave their mannerisms at the door when they immigrated to Native American land, huh? Answer me that? You filthy European trash. Most Mexicans have actual native American blood, so they have more right, than you do to this American land. Your ancestors have been her for 400years at the most.
As an American, I do not want immigrants coming to the United States. Every foreigner who was not born in this country should go home as they are not welcome here.
I was born here, my parents, and their parents were born here, and we don't want people here who do not conform to an American life.
It is bad enough we have the filthy Mexicans illegally invading our beautiful country.
What a nasty thing to say. The only true Americans are Native Americans. Everybody has their ancestry traced back to someone else (even yours as you say in your comment) You also stereotype all Mexicans as illegal immigrants. Also there are Americans who emigrate to other countries. Should they be treated like dirt just because they may not be citizens of another country?
@SnickleFritz79 You are a decedent of an immigrant. America was built by immigrants. Your ancestors came to America for freedom. Just like Mexicans right now.
@whiteipod2000 I am not. I am a descendant of a long line of an American family. We fly the American flag on the 4th of July with damn pride. We go to church every Sunday and we always vote for Republicans. We hate terrorists and gay people.
And this is what makes me more American than almost every other people in this unpatriotic country of bastard children who are descendants of immigrants.
@SnickleFritz79 So you mean to tell me. Your family has been in North America since before the 1500s. If so you are a Native American. What tribe are you in?
@SnickleFritz79 So why do you represent the very country that slaughtered, raped, and tortured your people. Removing them from their lands, and putting them somewhere foreign? Stop lying your probably some Southern hick, who never completed school, let alone passed a US History class. And you call yourself an American. Shame.
@SnickleFritz79 Ha. Unless you're a Ntive American, which I doubt, you are an American only because your ancestors (who came from another country) brought you there. If it weren't for FOREIGNERS and IMMIGRATION, you wouldn't be in the USA!!! Americans, like yourself, are people from all over the world. I am an American. I was born here too. But I love foreigners who move to America; I welcome them. Stop being so close-minded. It is quite sad that you're a fellow American and think this way.
@Nicole3900 I was born in the USA, so ere my parents, and so were their parents. So how exactly does that make me "foreign"??? If anybody is American, then it would be me. I was given automatic citizenship by BIRTHRIGHT. I am as American as apple pie. I watch baseball, wear Levis, and eat McDonald's.
I do not want people born in other countries to move and live in the U.S. They are stealing our jobs and threatening our way of ife with their own countries cultures and traditions.
@SnickleFritz79 that actually might be the most ignorant and racist thing i have ever heard or read in my entire life. shame on you and your ridiculous close-minded bigotry. I hope someone in your family marries someone of foreign descent so you can realize your ridiculousness.

Just think; If they bypassed Ellis Island and crashed those boats straight into Manhattan and everybody ran off, Obama would be granting them amnesty.
I had a patient once who'd come over at the age of 17 entirely by herself. That's chutzpah. With a cardboard suitcase & a few words of English, she cleaned houses at first. She got married, had a son whom they helped through medical school.
My grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from England when he was a baby, though he was about 20 years too late to go through Ellis Island. My grandmother's ancestors immigrated from Ireland, in the early 1800's. I love learning about family history. Even family history that isn't my own, hence my watching an Ellis Island video :P
I am a Brit but my 3xgreat grandfather immigrated from England to the US in 1886 after his wife died to join family who was out there who had immigrated a few years before.
My grandmother and grandfather immigrated to USA at the beginning of XX century.
They are met there and got married after in Chicago.
But my mother was born in Belarus, but its a long story
BTW
I do genealogy researching and searching distant relatives of descendants of that immigration, here in Belarus, Poland and in Smolensk, Pskov regions of Russia.
If you look further back in time you will see that it first started when the church started to loose its power over nations. Religions are to conservative to go hand in hand with science, instead of trying to prove things to be true they believe in something they want to be true.
because, technology is never really given to the public by the ruling elites, unless it aims to serve their needs. did you know the first computer was invented in 1893? the first refridgerator in the 1850's etc i can go on. bottom line is, any technology that is given to the masses, is obsolete.
what amazes me is to think how that lady at the end was running, and now, shes dead, most likely her children and grandchildren are dead. To think, what was she running for? everything those people were doing, instead of just being able to have a goddam roof over there heads, a food source WITHOUT having to pay some tax to some beurocratic tyrant. why does "civilization" have to be so inhumane. look at the world today, i wonder if these people knew of ww1 and 2 would they be in such a hurry
that unwashed masses as they are called by their former europeon rulers. too bad today "the new world" has fallen right back into the hands of the rulers of the "old world" whom these people were running from. human history: a sad tale indeed.
Altghough health care and medical knowledge was poor and there was not much comfort of modern conveniences I would still love to spend a few years back in those days. What an era for adventure.
i know. The world was smaller but still so different everywhere, it was like a limbo period. The age of the old meeting the age of the new, with all kinds of new technology but still the old mindset and old byzantine politics. That has negatives of course, a lot of them if you lived then and weren't aristocracy.
@whathoney73 There's still plenty of adventure left here ; ) you just have to go and find it. My parents did when they immigrated here in the 70's and I hope I can too.
Yeh sometimes i have arguments with yanks over Their army and ours Lol and some of them r just stupid.. but i like all americans not the 1s who start on the british for no reason.
lol yeh and i herd they love our accent but its the same when ur hear an american in the uk ur like WOW theirs an american! lol.
i get along with most americans..probly about 98% lol
and yeh when eva i hear an american on the bus or in public i wont say anything to them but ill ''think wow theirs an american'' and just lisen to their accent because u dont get many americans in the uk .. u get them visiting the posh places thou with loads of history... about england but not so much the main citys...
We have no unique accent, on the US scale (no "southern drawl" or any such thing.
Isn't it interesting how Americans and British people speak the exact same language and are of the exact same origins, yet sound so different to each other?
@Iheartdogdemons To someone like me who is from the Midwest, sometimes its not the accent that I notice from people that live in Cali, it's the words that are used or how they are said that gives it away.
@Iheartdogdemons I agree, same with Australia. If it wasn't for the technology advancement then Americans and Brits probably would have ended up speaking two totally different languages! I'm glad we don't, though. I love how if you speak English you can understand the people in all the different English-speaking people! :D
I understand that legal immigration to the U.S. has been greater in number than to all other countries of the world combined. (That is at least until 9-11-2001). Amazing statistic, which demonstrates American values -- generosity, freedom etc. I think you can say a lot of people from foreign countries do love America.
The message I wrote to "Opticaoptica" (a few posts above yours) is also for you. In fact, is dedicated to all the people who thinks like you. If you dont like to see immigrants around you, you better get yourself a rocket and and get away from this world straight to Mars,
THIS WORLD IS FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO SHARE IT, NOT TO LIVE ALONE IN IT.
If your own relatives 100 years ago had thought the same rubbish you say now, then you wouldnt be in your country now:You´d probably one of those thousands of immigrants looking for a better life.. are you stupid or what???..
You talk as if it were an easy and comfortable choice to be an immigrant.Believe me: leaving your country, your family, your language and your roots behind is painful and sometimes necessary in life, the last thing an immigrant needs is to hear opinions of people like you
My great grandfather arrived on Ellis Island in 1921, 62 years old, but was quarantined because of Tuberculosis. And he died there, too. The rest of his family were allowed in. Now that is tragic. His name was Elija Chabbas.
Even though this is clip of immigrants arriving in 1906 I imagined that the year was 1905 when my father arrived July 19 1905on the SS ITALIA after a 40 day trip from Archi Reggio Calabria Italy Like others only with a suit case and 10.00 Years ago I visted Ellis Island and saw his name on the wall Thanks for the clip as it made me feel like the real experience
Its amazing isn't it? My Great Grandfather came over from Lebanon in 1907 I believe. His name was Mansour Shahade (SHUH-HAY-DEE)and they told him his new name was Charles Mansour. Grandpa Charlie the textile worker and owner of several Camel Statues and the best Fatayer and Kabob in Cleveland, OHIO lol
It is incredible to me that my great grandparents arrived from Poland with only the clothes on their backs and small bags of personal belongings, almost no money, and completely alone... And they stepped through the same walkways as millions of others on Ellis Island. The history and stories of that place are amazing. Thanks for posting.
Poor parents sent only thier childeren if they couldn't afford the whole family. If the children couldn't find fake parents on the boat or if the adults whom the parents paid to act as their parents disowned them on Ellis Island, they were turned away and had to return back to Europe
I don't know how to set up videos and add music to them, but check out Marc Cohn's "Ellis Island". The song is so beautiful and would go great with this footage. Thanks so much for posting.

What an era for adventure.
whathoney73 2 years ago 13
i know. The world was smaller but still so different everywhere, it was like a limbo period. The age of the old meeting the age of the new, with all kinds of new technology but still the old mindset and old byzantine politics. That has negatives of course, a lot of them if you lived then and weren't aristocracy.
tubub 2 years ago
@whathoney73 There's still plenty of adventure left here ; ) you just have to go and find it. My parents did when they immigrated here in the 70's and I hope I can too.

These people were most likely Jews from Eastern Europe, seeing as how many came over during this time.

A land of immigrants. Great things can be achieved from togetherness.
.... Why did the immigrants who came here earlier think that they are better than the people they brought afterwards?

It's pretty nice.
Although we've got some predjudice problems across the country.
And then our economy isn't the best right now, but it's looking like it'll be back up to par soon.
Oh, and people will swoon over your accent.
lmao
CrazyShuba 2 years ago
Was you british then but moved to the USA?
Yeh sometimes i have arguments with yanks over Their army and ours Lol and some of them r just stupid.. but i like all americans not the 1s who start on the british for no reason.

lHoodlum 2 years ago
Haha, nope, born and raised in the U.S. of A.
And yeah, people who just bitch about the British for no reason piss me off too.
Really?
I'd think they'd think "Oh, they're American...great..."
CrazyShuba 2 years ago

lHoodlum 2 years ago
I'm from Florida. Full of old Jews and Cubans...
Yeah, that sounds about right. 2% is probably in the Bible Belt of America.
Haha, really?
Our accents aren't really that amazing, in my opinion.
Where are you from?
CrazyShuba 2 years ago
I'm from California.
We have no unique accent, on the US scale (no "southern drawl" or any such thing.
Isn't it interesting how Americans and British people speak the exact same language and are of the exact same origins, yet sound so different to each other?
xD
...
British people have sexy accents. xD
Iheartdogdemons 2 years ago 3
@Iheartdogdemons To someone like me who is from the Midwest, sometimes its not the accent that I notice from people that live in Cali, it's the words that are used or how they are said that gives it away.
bushman1518 2 years ago
Oh, you mean all the "Like"s and such?
xD
We use "like" in every other sentence.
xD
Iheartdogdemons 2 years ago
@Iheartdogdemons I agree, same with Australia. If it wasn't for the technology advancement then Americans and Brits probably would have ended up speaking two totally different languages! I'm glad we don't, though. I love how if you speak English you can understand the people in all the different English-speaking people! :D

I understand that legal immigration to the U.S. has been greater in number than to all other countries of the world combined. (That is at least until 9-11-2001). Amazing statistic, which demonstrates American values -- generosity, freedom etc. I think you can say a lot of people from foreign countries do love America.
ejm413 3 years ago
To clarify, that is annual immigration figures, for example in the 1990s.
ejm413 3 years ago
Amazing to think that even today 1/10 Americans are foreign born. I'm sure that has to be the highest anywhere in the world.
Good video.

Dear DinadanX:
The message I wrote to "Opticaoptica" (a few posts above yours) is also for you. In fact, is dedicated to all the people who thinks like you. If you dont like to see immigrants around you, you better get yourself a rocket and and get away from this world straight to Mars,
THIS WORLD IS FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO SHARE IT, NOT TO LIVE ALONE IN IT.
Sincerely: an immigrant

If your own relatives 100 years ago had thought the same rubbish you say now, then you wouldnt be in your country now:You´d probably one of those thousands of immigrants looking for a better life.. are you stupid or what???..
You talk as if it were an easy and comfortable choice to be an immigrant.Believe me: leaving your country, your family, your language and your roots behind is painful and sometimes necessary in life, the last thing an immigrant needs is to hear opinions of people like you
Evelyn40420 3 years ago
Most immigrants choose not to leave their language behind. Where I live Polish is the primary language spoken.

I remain of my grandparents did went through to Ellis Island from Abruzzi, Itlay in early 1920's. I was very proud of my grandparents.

Poor parents sent only thier childeren if they couldn't afford the whole family. If the children couldn't find fake parents on the boat or if the adults whom the parents paid to act as their parents disowned them on Ellis Island, they were turned away and had to return back to Europe
