they were crying because in russia, or any part of the former soviet union, world war 2 was the most devastating wars for them. therefore the musicians of the time wrote the most heart wrenching songs about young soldiers dying, families being torn apart. Even nowadays when russians hear that song, it really hits home, even if you didnt see or participate in the war.
