@MissYoungClassic Its a great song from a great musical ! Wish we could have seen Doris as Nellie ...oh well ! Hope you have a great week ... take care... Toni
I've gotten some flack here - because - I think Doris would have been the perfect Nellie !!!! I'm with you 100% on that - no doubt - she would have been perfect.
A recent video game uses this song -- Fallout 3. There's a radio station you can tune into in the game (that repeats the same songs, loaded from the disc), and this is one of them, but not by Doris Day, I suspect.
Of all the "what ifs" regarding roles not played in Hollywood films, this is the one that stands out. Doris Day would have been fantastic as Nellie---bar none. As it turned out, the movie was "good"--somewhat over-produced and with OK performances...nothing like what it would have been with DD in the lead. A big loss in the history of the Hollywood musical.
I couldn't agree with you more ! A really great loss - every time I watch this movie -- all I can think is how great Doris would have been in this role ! It was perfect for her. A huge loss to the Hollywood musical genre and all those movie goers !! Thank you for your great comment !!
Richard Rodgers wanted Doris for the lead in the film, and when he heard this recording, made two years after the film, he threatened his friendship with producer Josh Logan for not hiring her. (Money was the reason, bu Rodgers was interested in the art of the film.)
Yes --- I think dear Marty had a hand in her not getting the role. Too bad...they should have paid her whatever "he" wanted ! I think Mitzi was fine ... but Doris was the perfect Nellie !
I loved this entire album. Can't you just see the emotion the lyrics evoke? Doris is the only artist , that I have ever heard, capable of achieving this phenomena audibly . A difficult task but Doris makes it seem easy! A uniquely gifted individual. Love the video, thanks!
This is probably my favorite album. My mom had it and I started listening to it when I was 10. I agree with everything you said - her reading of these songs is remarkable. In my opinion - several of them are the best versions I've ever heard. And some of their authors agree !
Doris could have effotlessly knocked it out of the park as Nellie- a perfect fit of performer and role if ever there was one. I think Josh Logan was very short-sighted (according to his autobiography) to keep her out of the running because she didn't sing at a party. Doesn't add up, considering her accomplishments on film and records at this stage in her career (around 1957).
I've heard that story too -- but also the story just below posted by jewelsoei -- that it was actually Marty that caused this not to happen. I've heard a couple of different reasons for that -- too much money -- or just being difficult. I have to agree with you - Doris would have been PERFECT as Nellie ! So sad we didn't get to experience that !!
i have the Rogers and Hammerstein classic dvd collection and part of the special features on south pacific was a historian saying something about DD being the front runner for Nellie's movie role but apparently when she and her husband went to some party held by casting members for R&H her husband was being difficult and no offer was ever made to her nor was spoken about again.
Too bad.... she would have really taken that movie to a higher level...
Yeah - I believe we have Marty to thank for her not being in South Pacific. I read someplace that he was demanding too much money. Marty was kind of a .... umm .... whats a nice word ??? Jerk ??
Too bad - I think she would have been the perfect Nellie. Thank you for that info.I'm going to have to look for that collection. Sounds like a good one.
DORIS DAY became a superstar as she was because of her excellent voice somewhat classy and very much packaged as an artist. Mitzi Gaynor was good, but categorizing her like Doris with superstar status? Listen and look really good!!!!
Have to agree with you !! Gaynor was good but to me Doris would have been perfect in the part of Nellie. And - I have no doubt she could have kept up with Gaynor in the dancing dept. She began dancing lessons at the age of 5 and her original goal was to be a dancer. It was only sidelined because a car she was riding in was hit by a train. And lets face it -she is way ahead of Mitzi in the vocal dept. I think you are right - Doris outshines Mitzi - in my opinion !!
hey doris day fans, i am crazy about her, but there's no way dd could compare to mitzi gaynor in nellie's role in the south pacific movie, mitzi fit perfectly in the role and her movements and dancing are much superior to dd, sorry dd fans, don't take it too personally, i love doris and her recordings
I thought Mitzi did a fine job - but she doesn't have the personality that Doris would have brought to the role. And...I think Doris could keep up with her dancing too. Who knows - we could all be wrong - but to me Doris is the perfect Nellie !!
I'm with you. I don't want to offend Mitzi Gaynor either. But - I would have loved to see Doris play this part. It really is the perfect part for her. Just think what we missed !!
Those are the lyrics in the published sheet music. The song was published before "South Pacific" opened on Broadway, and the lyrics were changed (for the better, I think) between that time and the Broadway opening.
Doris Day isn't the only one who sang those lines. You can find them in other "pop covers," but never in an official recording of the score, which would of course use the Vocal Score and not the sheet music.
Yes - I've read that too. I once read that she regretted that she hadn't gotten the chance to do South Pacific. But, she probably didn't regret it too long. She lives in the now and as Terry said is good at moving on.
This is a fantastic example of the way to sing a popular song! Doris reigns!
It's true that Doris wanted the film role and was passed over for Mitzi Gaynor for money reasons, but when Richard Rodgers heard this performance by DD, recorded two years after the film was made, he phoned SP director Josh Logan and excoriated him for not hiring Doris for the film. "Listen to her sing this, and you'll see what kind of a score we could have had instead of that pallid performance you got from Gaynor."
Hi Toni, Thanks for sharing this gem. I always feel that this song shows that Doris would be great on stage. It's a shame she never did that. She would be great on Broadway.
Peter - you are so right ! That personality that grabs you on the screen would have been a magnet in the theater. Too bad she had such an aversion to performing before a live audience. And wouldn't she have been perfect for the movie ?! What a loss to us that it didn't work out for her to do it.
Hate it when it's not actually a video. If I wanted to hear just a song, I'd listen to the radio.

Anybody know where these lyrics come from? The second half of the intro is different from what appears in the musical, as far as I'm aware.

My fantasy has always been Doris opposite Mario Lanza in South Pacific. Imagine that soundtrack album!

Another great "if" is Frank Sinatra in Carousel. His version of If I Love You is extraordinary.

I don't mean to offend Mitzi Gaynor. But I personally choose Doris Day as an ideal
actress to play Nellie Forbush. Doris is really versatile. Not only does she excel in singing but her acting attracts everyone.

There's no reason Oscar Hammerstein could not have written both sets of lyrics. The real question would be why, not whether, he wrote two sets.

Very strange !
Dayniac4324 3 years ago
Yes, I believe they did - the song is from South Pacific and Nelly is talking about her
relationship with men before falling in love with Emile. Rodgers and Hammerstein certainly did write this.

They say Marty wanted too much money for this role, so she didn't act in South Pacific movie.
Maybe she recorded more songs and another movie instead. She is perfect in anything she made.
