This is when you didn't need cable to watch a game all you need was an analog antenna. Now days you either have to fork out 450 bucks for a day at the stadium or pay cable or sat tv a hefty monthly bill to watch your own team locally. I am pretty sure a fan/working man could use that extra 80-120 bucks a month.
Being a Chiefs fan, suring his career I hated him, but loved the way he ran. He reminded me of Christian Okoye, could run over your entire defense then outrun anyone who's left.
I had never heard of this guy. I ran across him while looking at highlights of the 100 leading rushers in NFL history (he's number 99). This guy is FUCKING EPIC!! He is a lot like Tolbert, but he's faster. It had to be really scary to tackle him.
Mebbe not, but Tolbert + Mathews can! Add to that the Rivers-Gates connection and whichever WR we have cuz Philip just don't give a fawk, and the Chargers got a good shot.
i miss him too, he was amazing, electric, we wouled really need him today, with the chargers, 'cause we dont have a really good back right now, even so great player, also barry sanders was the man, if hadn't retired early he would be on top of the list, and he was good with a bad team
When i was a kid playing street ball i used a sharpie marker to make myself a home-made "jersey" using a white t-shirt. The back read 'Means 20' HA! Means is the man.
@DaygoSports No disrespect intended but...Dude, no way. Like it was mentioned, Earl Campbell, Means looked like him, but ran like lightning fast. He was exciting to watch.
my first AOL screen name back in id say 95 was means20, hes my hero, i got a football card book of probably every card ever produced for him lol. hes the man, speed and power, was so much fun to watch him play.
The speed was not tampered with. It may appear faster due to blurring but that was the way he looked on tv back then! I'm from Ohio so it is all Bengals, Steelers, and Browns here (and Ohio State) but I NEVER missed watching a game when Natrone was playing. He is the reason I started watching football regularly. He really was a 240lb Darren Sproles and to this day is still my favorite all time back (with TD from Denver).
Thank you for this. Gosd i been wanting to c highlights of this guy forever. the most explosive rookie ive ever seen, bar none. the guy was incredible
Natrone Means is one of my favorite Chargers of all time. He plays with a big heart and San Diegans appreciated everything he did during his time as a Charger.
Untrue. That was the original footage from ESPN, recorded on VHS and later copied to my computer and then to the web. I didn't modify the video speed in any way.
Grew up watching Natrone with my parents(big Chargers fans)... Been trying to remember his name forever, and just found out tonight. Guy was such a beast. Hard to believe a guy that size could run like that.
He was one of the most explosive rb's it was a shame how he fell off reminds me of jamal anderson of the 98 falcons who had amazing seasons to get their teams to teh superbowl but came up short and were never the same
true. i remember how good natrone means was, but man he wasn't the same after the the superbowl lost. he was with the jaguars, had 1 good season but wasn't the same.
Jamal Anderson was getting better and better and had a great season in 98. following 99 season tore his acl and came up not the same.... career ended short... sad man. sad...
The following year he held out of Training Camp over a contract dispute, then pulled a groin and missed most of the second half of the season. The Chargers released him shortly after the season ended. He signed with Jacksonville and had a good two-game playoff run, but mostly he backed up Fred Taylor. Unfortunately, more injuries followed and he never returned to his former greatness.
I see a mix of Maurice Jones Drew and Michael Turner in this guy. Like a shifty little bowling ball that can shed tackles as well. I hope that Gartrell Johnson, our RB draft pick from this recent draft, will be at least be able to shed tackles like Turner with his speed, get some short yards in short yardage plays, but hopefully be also shifty. I'm hoping to see some Natrone Means in this guy.
When the Chargers beat the Steelers in San Diego in the '94 regular season finale, the Steelers had home-field advantage locked. The Chargers had to win that game to get the #2 seed and 1st round byr or else they would have been playing the Dolphins in Miami in the Divisional Playoffs.
Growing up, Natrone was one of my favorite running backs to watch right up there with Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, and Thurman Thomas. The guy was simply amazing!
Man, Natrone was a BEAST!!!! Killin them at Central Cabarrus, as a UNC Tarheel, and also in the NFL as a Charger (San Diego),Jacksonville Jag, and also some w/ Carolina. Did some coaching with Livingstone College and also West Charlotte High. He's working with Jonathan Stewart of the Carolina Panthers, through the minority caoches program, so be on the lookout for him...
For all those that have followed his career since Cabarrus County Optimist Club PeeWee football through Central Cabarrus HS, UNC-CH and the pros - THANK YOU!
Wow, thanks for the memories. I was actually at most of the charger practices that year. Al, Nate, dennis gibson, Rodney harrison's like 2nd year. My boy Vaughn Parker. They are all gone now. David Binn is the only charger left from that season.
The Chargers had a winning team but as soon as Booby Ross left they went into a downward spiral. Now, we have an even better team not because of the coach but because of the the GM.
let go in 1995 due to a technicality.broke his foot and hayden ran wild the rest of the season.they cut natrone and kept hayden.hayden was one of the worst runningbacks we ever had.besides the defense in 1998,natrone was the only bright spot in a bad ryan leaf rookie season.
in the 5 superbowls the 49ers were in,the chargers scored the most points in those games against them.plus they faced the best 49ers defense they ever had.
Mostly from teams being forced to throw from way behind. With the exception of Deion's TD against the Saints...most of the scores were cosmetic. The '94 defense could be moved on when that lights out offense even stalled in the slightest. Examples being the Philly, Detroit, and that great Rams game on Sunday night when Flipper Anderson torched Deion. But the offense scored so frequently, that the other teams became one dimensional. The '84 49ers usually had to play teams honest throughout.
The Philly game was a complete meltdown on both sides of the ball. I think you have to throw that one out the window as it wasn't an accurate representation of what that team was.
The offense was less than stellar in both meetings with Dallas that year, but the forced turnovers were the difference.
Well they played great in the regular season game. But they gave up 28 pts in the NFC title game and one of those TO's was on special teams. If Dallas didn't screw the pooch in the first 6 minutes AND Emmitt doesn't pop his other hammy, the Cowboys might've had a more realistic chance. But like I said...you could move the ball on that team. Most teams just got down too far to play balanced
Anyway, having seen several of the 1984 games in recent years on DVD, I'd classify that as more of a "bend but don't break" defense. Few realize Dean missed 3/4ths the season and Lott missed 4 1/2 games with injuries that would lead to the end of his time at corner.
I enjoyed the hell out of watching Natrone run, I've got a game worn jersey from him actually. Thanks much for posting, I drafted him as my 2nd RB in '94 in fantasy football and ran away with the league.
He retired in 2000. After the great 1994 season, he got hurt in '95 and was never quite the same. A runner like him takes a lot of hits - they usually don't last too long in the NFL.

He retired in 2000. After the great 1994 season, he got hurt in '95 and was never quite the same. A runner like him takes a lot of hits - they usually don't last too long in the NFL.
