I find that most atheists and most religionists have something in common, which, by the way, they share with most humans. That being egotism. In my opinion they lack a truly open mind (to say nothing of an open heart) and are not so much interested in *the* truth as *their* truth.
It's not fair to characterise people based on atheism or any ism. To say that about prison populations is to imply that atheists are more moral or better people (in general). I don't think this is true. First of all, just because someone is in prison doesn't make them a 'bad person'. Secondly, perhaps atheism is something more common among well-educated of well-off people (for reasons that I won't go into here). Such people make up a small percentage of prison populations.
Great quote from Galileo. I remember my Mum telling me as a child that some people thought it was wrong to user aeroplanes because if God had wanted us to fly then he would have given us wings. My immediate reaction was: That is silly, that's why God gave us brains!
In my experience, atheists are basically reacting to religious oppression. I find EInstein's quotes and considerations on the matter of atheism and religion to be of great insight. I believe it is safe to say that none of the scientific geniuses and pioneers, nor the great philosophers, were atheists. That being said, that does not mean that they were religionists either. I believe this is true of Newton, Einstein, Jefferson, Darwin, and many others.

Atheists, by and large, seem to hate saying they have 'a belief'. This is ridiculous. It is a belief. We all have beliefs; that is part of being human. Now, atheism may arguably be a different kind of belief to say a belief in Christianity, but it is still a belief. It may be a belief based on reason and logic and evidence, as opposed to blind faith, or reasonable faith, but it is still a belief.
Of course, if you don't want to consider atheism a belief, well... you are free to believe that too
I think Agnosticism is the admission of "I don't know" (esp I don't know if there is a God). Atheism, in my understanding, is the belief that there is no God or gods. I suppose you could distinguish between Strong Atheism, which would assert there is no God, and Weak Atheism, which would say there is no reason to believe there is a God.
