I saw the Vulcan in Chicago at the Air and Water Show in 1977. It flew directly over our little sailboat and I remember when they firewalled the power levers. I swear our boat almost rattled apart! It was great.
@kiwisnowy Yes the British do still make planes, not like this Vulcan though. The Dreamliner you're thinking of is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner which comes with an option for Rolls Royce engines. Rolls Royce have been at the forefront of jet engine technology since the 1940s but they've never made planes
@markjohnlewis yea i saw that curtain of rain coming past Reculver all the way down then the wind suddenly picked up at the light house lol. the arrows looked good against the moody sky on sunday aswell!
This aircraft is proof that Britain could (and can) rival any feat of engineering our rivals have to offer. The V-bombers, TSR-2 (shelved for the F-111), Concorde, the Harrier and the BAC Lightning, were unique. Shame we almost aren't allowed to produce our own aircraft (or any other feats of engineering) any more.
@theeviltwaz Not for as long as Jews control our countries, listen to Jew Benjamin Freedman's 1961 speech if you don't believe Jews control our governments.
My Dad flew in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and I can hear him comment on this landing that they "painted it on the runway". Very nice and Thanks for sharing it!
I used to live under a regular flight path of these beasts (not a state secret I may be a bit old one of the greatest childhood memories which got me into Airfix models) wish I could have fixed a nut or bolt on this one but we didn't have superglue back then....
For an aircraft without 'burners, it's damn loud and I love it. There's something special about these big cold war bombers. Vulcan, B-52, etc. You get that special feeling looking at them, like you can almost *feel* they're from another era. Just like WW2 aircraft. Puts a slight sense of awe in you. Here in the US I drive past one on permanent static almost daily, but I'd love to see one fly.
@hectiky The UK no longer operates a strategic bomber force, as far as a I know, so nothing replaced these aircraft.
The Vulcan first flew on 30 August 1953, and was involved in the Falklands War, flying missions in May 1982, and remained operational with the RAF until March 1984.
The UK's nuclear deterrent is now purely naval, comprising only SLBMs; we have no nuclear bomber force anymore, nor any ground-launched ICBMs.
i live by air base i looked up this incredible howling sensation because 2 weeks ago 2 vulcans flew over my home with the howl (luckly i knew they were coming and got them on camera(will post later))
@mann8942 See Tupolev Tu-160 and Tupolev Tu-144))) Theese are the sme planes but first is strategy bomber but second is civil plane for cargo and passengers transportin)))
There are several aircraft that I never worked with so I am more than willing to take your word for the noise levels.
I did work with the F4 and Concorde and all I can say is that the noise stopped being and actual sound and started becoming a physical sensation if you were close enough, which I was.
An F4 in afterburner from 10 ft away could make your nose bleed.
I regret that I never got to see the B-70 on the flightline.
It is a British Bomber not a Fighter just as the American B1 Lancer is. They are strictly used for Bombing combat. The British and U.S. alright had Fighters that could do the job alone without needing Bombers to do the Fighting. The Bombers took care of the larger potential danger on ground that could be deadly for the Fighters,Servicemen, and Allie Civilians they were trying to protect.
To think there was actually a Vulcan up till 1965 that had 4 Afterburning Rolls Royce Olympus Jet Engines. It was cancelled in flying service in 1965. I wonder if the same type of Afterburning engines were transfered to the Concorde?
@BBQFanNo1 Sort of, the Vulcan did test the after burning Olympus in the early to mid Sixties. A single engine was usually mounted where the bomb bay would have been, its was tried in a few configurations, one of which blew up (taking the aircraft with it) and another catching fire. They did however get it to work in the end, even doing wet-weather tests via a sprinkler pointed into the intake. Impressive, not to mention ground breaking stuff really..
Had the priveledge of seeing the Vulcan and all the best loudest Aircraft since 1967 take off demos at Air Shows. The Valkyre,Corcorde,Blackbird,B1 Lancer,Vickers,Tomcat,Tornado, and an Old Canadian Hercules JATO Demo close up which was even a lot louder than the Fat Albert demo. these Aircraft on take off from the closer distance than they allowed years later were the loudest mother fuckers you ever heard.
One of my Fabourite Planes ever, I remember being little and seeing one of these take off at an air show, used to love how the engine noise could be felt through your body, Epic! awesome video, brings back some good memories
I was born in England and emigrated when I was 6.......but i can still remember seeing the Vulcan at an airshow 1973.....surely one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
I also remember a high speed run from a Lightning!!!!....awesome
@Aussiephil99 I remember watching it back in June 1973 at an Air Show too along with Canadian F-101 Voodoo seven minute demo, immediately followed by Canadian C-130 Hercules JATO demo close up, then just before the last demo by the RAF Red Arrows demo team the RAF Vulcan did a ten minute close up demo.
The Voodoos,Hercules JATO,and Vulcan were the highlights of the Air Show. The weather was superb sunny clear blue skies and hot all afternoon.
I saw one of these on the tarmac when I was a kid at an airshow down in Cornwall in the early 90's. I was only like 4 or something at the time but I remember going up some steps to look inside the cockpit and wanted one lol. I think that's where I found my love for Airfix models haha.
I used to work the flight line at Midway Island in the '70's when the Brits and their Vulcans would stop over.
I remember the first time that I saw one as I was waiting to direct her in. I was looking up into the clouds when this huge delta wing beast emerged as if magically from the clouds. At that point did I realize the immensity of the aircraft.
The crew pitched her nose up and poured on the coals. Windows shook. The station CO was none too happy. I used to enjoy the Brit crews.

@killbambi87 what a twat. how is this plane new? its been around for about 60 years, how many planes have canada got that have been round for 6 years let alone 60
One of history's greatest aircraft. I love the Vulcan. I got to see one up close as a teenager.A Vulcan had to make an emergency landing in Pueblo Colorado at the Pueblo Memorial Airport (PUB). I think I was 17 or 18 and the RAF had to bring in a replacement engine for the aircraft. It was great to watch it take off and give us a low pass on the airfield.
A team of air cadets from 1122 (Marmion) Squadron ATC will be cycling 30 miles on the 12th of June, from their squadron HQ to DCAE Cosford in Shropshire to raise money for XH558 - you can help support them here! -
w w w. justgiving. com / 1122-marmion-squadron-atc
@digireedoo Nah our weapons just blow up the cubic mile of air the plane is in....that way even our H.S. dropouts can defend us( and quite well I would add).
@middsteve A cubic mile of air eh? Crikey, are you sure that is a broad enough tolerance? I'd say the Vulcan survival odds would still be pretty rosy........
@digireedoo Absolutely crackin' comeback big man well done! I remember seeing Vulcans at RAF Scampton as a little boy on holiday. My Uncle served there. At that time they were a sort of whitish grey. I found out later they were testing the engines for Concorde!
@middsteve I dare bet someone's mentioned this back in the list somewhere but the Vulcan's a heavy bomber not a fighter.
It's actually the 'plane that inspired stealth technology when the Yanks noticed it didn't show up on some of their RADAR systems during war games. It was solely by virtue of its shape with one large flat lower surface, more or less, similar to a stealth bomber.
@fireandsafety And were completely ineffective. It was a waste of taxpayer money but the RAF wanted their time in the spotlight. The SHAR could've done the same job far cheaper, and actually hit the airfield. Criminally mismanaged by Admiral Sandy Woodward.
My understanding from a senior team member is that Vulcan has about 4 yrs max befor it will have to be retired, due to another major refurb being required which will simply be too expensive, so make the most of it Ladies & Gents..
Despite not holding current pilots licence (damn colour blindness) nor being a LAME I have spent more than my fair share of hours stripping paint of ageing parts and searching for long out of date equipment. To all that were involved in returning this magnificent aircraft to flight.. A job very well done, just hope that this antipodean will get to see her in flight for himself one day.
Nice! But...at what cost? Is it worth TWO MILLION POUNDS ANNUALLY to fly it? Vulcan Operating Co told Lottery that airshow fees would pay all costs for sustained operations. Now, we're finding out that's not true. Sorry, guys, but TWO MILLION POUNDS ANNUALLY was never gonna come from airshow fees. A blind man couldda seen that before you started. I seem to recall the RAF retired it because, aside from being old, it was also EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE. VulcantotheHANGAR!
How dare you say such rubbish about Vulcan XH558 "The People's aircraft" WE DID RETURN IT TO FLIGHT and it's the most popular aircraft in the airshow circuit. VTS gets lots of money from the selling of memberships, and merchendise. So don't u dare say that it's impossible. We will reach our target. It is the people's aircraft. Yes it was too expensive to run thats why the RAF dropped it. LONG LIVE VULCAN TO THE SKY. U should be ashamed of yourself! Go and fuck yourself
Why didint they bring gear in???

No wander the Yanked wanted our engineers on their teams during the 70's and 80's for their "stealth" projects lol.

@middsteve - that's because in the unlikely event we ever went to war against the yanks, we know you couldn't shoot it down ;-)
digireedoo 1 year ago 17
@digireedoo Nah our weapons just blow up the cubic mile of air the plane is in....that way even our H.S. dropouts can defend us( and quite well I would add).
middsteve 1 year ago
@middsteve A cubic mile of air eh? Crikey, are you sure that is a broad enough tolerance? I'd say the Vulcan survival odds would still be pretty rosy........
digireedoo 1 year ago
@digireedoo Absolutely crackin' comeback big man well done! I remember seeing Vulcans at RAF Scampton as a little boy on holiday. My Uncle served there. At that time they were a sort of whitish grey. I found out later they were testing the engines for Concorde!

@middsteve I dare bet someone's mentioned this back in the list somewhere but the Vulcan's a heavy bomber not a fighter.
It's actually the 'plane that inspired stealth technology when the Yanks noticed it didn't show up on some of their RADAR systems during war games. It was solely by virtue of its shape with one large flat lower surface, more or less, similar to a stealth bomber.

fireandsafety 1 year ago 2
@fireandsafety And were completely ineffective. It was a waste of taxpayer money but the RAF wanted their time in the spotlight. The SHAR could've done the same job far cheaper, and actually hit the airfield. Criminally mismanaged by Admiral Sandy Woodward.
RavenholmeCP42 8 months ago
My understanding from a senior team member is that Vulcan has about 4 yrs max befor it will have to be retired, due to another major refurb being required which will simply be too expensive, so make the most of it Ladies & Gents..

lets hope one day we can see the vulcan and lightening doing a flypast?

VulcantotheHANGAR!
tradbgon 2 years ago
How dare you say such rubbish about Vulcan XH558 "The People's aircraft" WE DID RETURN IT TO FLIGHT and it's the most popular aircraft in the airshow circuit. VTS gets lots of money from the selling of memberships, and merchendise. So don't u dare say that it's impossible. We will reach our target. It is the people's aircraft. Yes it was too expensive to run thats why the RAF dropped it. LONG LIVE VULCAN TO THE SKY. U should be ashamed of yourself! Go and fuck yourself
planeboy737 2 years ago 26
@planeboy737 Do you have reasonable knowledge about thermodynamics, aerodynamics and fluid mechanics? Just asking ;)
Cougar545x39 2 years ago
I know a little on Aerodynamics but then i've only just left high school. But i do know a fair bit about the vulcan. Why do you ask?
planeboy737 2 years ago
@planeboy737 because you were stating, that "you" ("WE DID RETURN IT TO FLIGHT") have returned something to flight.
Cougar545x39 2 years ago
"We" the Vulcan To The Sky Club helped return this aircraft to flight by donating and supporting the cause. Your taking it way to literally.
